Have a look at the mini challenge please :-)

And maybe set notifications if that can help you remember to check in?

Melindam | 4428 comments Hello again, Team Andromeda!

Team Neptune here. :)

You recommended Wyrd Sisters, but as other books from the same series are allowed, I read Maskerade, which is one of my favourite Discworld / Witches book.
Much as I despise The Phantom of the Opera, I love how Terry Pratchett pokes fun at it by letting Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax loose among opera-people.
I finished it this morning while commuting to work on the train and got some funny looks from people, because I just couldn't help laughing out loud. :)))

I will be reading I Shall Wear Midnight from the Tiffany Aching books. Will drop by when I finished.

Happy Reading to Everyone.

But the exchanges bw Nanny Ogg & Granny in this book are priceless. :D
And of course there is Nanny's cookbook ..."from Maids of Honour to Tarts..." :D

Katie | 230 comments Ok, so I looked at the mini challenge and think I get it. I'm a little confused on the state of our team in particular. What still needs to be done?

ETA: Sorry if this info is already gathered somewhere and I just missed it.

message 358: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments you need to look at Part 2 - we've got the six books covered for part 1.

So check out the other team recs (except the teams in part 1) and read a book that can be linked to one of the recs.

Simples!

Links can't be based on "book spec" - so same page count / MPG wouldn't be OK.
Same author / both books have vampire char / author/char have the same name / covers have same item are all good examples (though not exhaustive!)

Elite (Eagle Elite, #1) by Rachel Van Dyken
Date Read Feb 15
Rating 4 stars

I love Rachel Van Dyken. I have been waffling on this series because it is new adult/college. I have had a 50/50 chance of enjoying college books. I am really happy that this is not a typical college romance series. I should have known RVD would do a wonderful job. I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to like Nixon or not. He seemed like a bully. So glad that there was so much more to him and that he had reasons for acting the way he did. I was a bit frustrated with the way the book ended. At least the next one is out so I don’t have to wait to listen to it.

This book has been on my TBR for awhile now. This was a different from other shifter books which was refreshing. I like that the dragons are able to communicate while in dragon form. I did enjoy the bit of humor in the books. Kind of reminded of Lynsay Sands with how GA uses humor. This is a series I will continue with.

Sabrina | 341 comments Hi team Andromeda! My name is Sabrina I am on team Venus. I was reading the Rock Chick series that one of your members recommended when this mini challenge started. I love rock and roll romances and I thought because of the title that was what I was getting. However, I was pleasantly surprised to get not a rock band series, but a PI/Protection series. The first book was so fun with the alpha male, strong female lead, and hilarious undertone. I like the writing so much I continued the series.

When the mini challenge started, I notice I wasn't feeling the authors plotting as much as I had before. After finishing book seven, Rock Chick Regret by Kristen Ashley
Rock Chick Regret (Rock Chick, #7) by Kristen Ashley , I figured out what my issue is regarding her plot. She used rape as a plot device to propel the story and took little care regarding the nature of the topic itself. Additionally, it seemed to me that the author
had her female characters, the rock chick group, acting more juvenile than she normally did any of her other books. This book almost put me off the rest of the series, but it's not going to for the simple fact that I have to find out about Ally. I have wanted to know her story since book three. I was hoping she would end up with a childhood friend, Daruis, but I don't see that happening.

Anywho I digress, book seven is the highest rated book out of the series, and I was wondering if the person who recommended the series completed the series. If you did, what did you think of this particular book? I wonder if I missing something, since others seem to be rating it 5 starts?

Also, I am going to start the final book tomorrow. I am hoping it pulls away my current rock chick gloom. Once I complete book eight, I can also let y'all know which book I thought was the best.

Any way, thanks for the recommendation and happing reading to you all.

~Sabrina

Hi Andromeda - I'm also from Team Venus - You clearly had lots of great recommendations because you already have lots of posts in your thread!

I chose to listen to Yes Please by Amy Poehler by Amy Poehler. She said a lot of things that I would have loved to highlight and keep if I were reading, but I think audio was a great choice for this one. Her personality really came through, and she had lots of guest readers also. I laughed so many times, and listened for way longer stretches than I should have because I was enjoying it so much. So thank you for the recommendation!

Two of my favorite quotes were:
“That is the motto women should constantly repeat over and over again. Good for her! Not for me.”

And:
“However, if you do start crying in an argument and someone asks why, you can always say, "I'm just crying because of how wrong you are.”

message 369: by Katie (new)

Katie | 230 comments Hey Sabrina --

I think I was the one who rec'd that series. I remember not enjoying that book as much as the others, though that doesn't seem to be reflected in my rating. She kinda stepped outside of the core group on that one and I wasn't feeling it quite as much as the others in the series.

I really enjoyed book 8. I needed to see Ally get her HEA and to step out on her own. No, she doesn't end up with Darius, but I fell in love with Ren and hope you do as well. Kristen Ashley still hasn't written a story for Darius, but a lot of us hope to see one someday. :)

message 372: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4428 comments Hello again, this is Team Neptune here! :)

I have finished I Shall Wear Midnight in lieu of The Shepherd's Crown.

For me this was -sadly- the book where things started on the slippery slope for me with the Tiffany Aching-series. The core was interesting, but it was surrounded by so much unnecessary padding that started grating. Also I couldn't shake the feeling that Sir Terry was actually spoonfeeding us with the same facts and information basically in every chapter and this put me quite out of countenance with him.
Tiffany, whom I always admired for her down-to-earth thinking, first sight and second thoughts, became almost insufferable with her self-anointed martyrdom and basically 50 % of the book was about nothing else but the constant repeat of how much she is doing alone as there is noone else to do it. It became rather tiresome after Chapter 1.
As I said, the core story saved the day eventually, but it's far below par the best Discworld standards.

message 373: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hi Melindam!

Yeah, I agree that the last couple of Tiff are off-the-boil - though would note that even off-form, Pratchett can out-write a vast swathe of authors!

I've not actually reread Shepherd's Crown yet (unusual, as I've read most of the Discworld three times - not Rincewind, though. I'm not Team Rincewind in the least), and it lingers in my head mainly for THE chapter.

I think, as well, Sir Terry was struggling with the emotional growth bit - possibly teen girls are not his forte, as most of his characters don't really (on don't need to) go through that sort of personal development - Vimes and his struggle with alcohol is about it. And relationships are usually gruff & matter-of-fact.

Cat, I was thinking of re-reading The Shepherd's Crown, but I decided against it in the end.
1. It makes me infinitely sad.
2. apart from the first 20%, I did not like it at all. Yes, I know this was in the last phase of his illness, etc... but I don't consider it a finished book, only a 1st draft. Plus, honestly it was a repetition of what he had already written 10000 times better in Lords and Ladies and in the earlier Tiffany-books.

We haaaave:

- one 5 card
- one 7 card
- several 9 cards

Those are a little trickier. The rest are a few 1 cards, a couple of 4, 6, Skip.

Not that much left. And then we'll have to fill the Wild cards but for those we can duplicate one of the cards in that hand, so we can pick the easier ones.
