Shanna I have a few questions about the challenges. If you are participating in more than one challenge, do you use the same book for multiple challenges? Or do you only log a book in one challenge at a time? For this Alphabet Soup Challenge, should I only include books that would be considered classics (modern or traditional)? Does it depend on how challenging I want my challenge to be?

Thanks for your insight!

I am double dipping for some books for different challenges. I assume it’s a personal preference thing. Here I am logging the first book I read for the letter, which will lead to some double dipping.

Definitely use the same book for multiple challenges! Just can't use the same book twice in one challenge. Thanks for the question!
For the alphabet soup challenge, it is entirely up to you what looks you choose, as long as they match up with each letter. My only guideline would be an actual "book" as opposed to short story or comic, but there's no official rule on that so feel free to include them if you want!
All of the challenges are for ANY book, whether we are reading for this book club or not. The only exception would be 3 of the 10 events for the Olympics challenge - they focus solely on book club reads.

Kasey, I have always included some "comics". So, I guess we should think about this and maybe establish a rule so as to avoid some of us including and some not.

These aren't the regular comics, but special bound editions that usually are published later and integrate a story previously published in several diferent comics issues, as if in chapters. These editions have an ISBN (unlike the regular comics, that usually have an ISSN). Example: two recent Spider-Man editions I included in my challenges count.

In Goodreads, the usual understanding is that "if a publication has an ISBN, it is a book", and can be included in Goodreads.

So, regular comics aren't books, special bound editions (either hardcover or paperback) with an ISBN are.

In addition to this, there are thousands of graphic novels that are not published as comics, but only as hardcover or paperback single edition of only one story. These may be adaptations of classic books for the graphic novel format (say, Moby Dick, for example) or original works and even long series like Tintin, Asterix, etc. Or standalone works, some of which have been considered extraordinarily outstanding and art pieces. "Maus", for example, is a historical novel, a holocaust memory, a story of a father-son relationship, etc., and greatly acclaimed. But is all graphic, with mouses, cats, dogs, etc. Could anyone say it is less literary because of the format?

All of them with an ISBN, of course.

What about critical editions with a lot of art but text as well? Like the complete reedition of Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse newspaper strips by Fantagraphics? Which I regularly review and include in my challenges. :-)

We could go on with more examples or details, but I think that's good for making my point.

My suggestion is to follow the Goodreads way: if it has an ISBN, it is a book and can be counted.

Now for short stories.

If only one short story is read out of a book with a collection of short stories, it is a partial read, the book wasn't read. And that short story doesn't have its own ISBN. So, it is not a book. (NAB, in Goodreads jargon)

If a short story, however, has been published alone as a single book, with cover, title, its own ISBN, etc., then it certainly is a book and can be counted.

Also, my suggestion. :-)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Some examples from the Goodreads Librarian Manual, including the one about comic books (highlited in bold by me).

"These items are books:
* coloring books
.........
* bound sheet music, scores, librettos, etc.
* atlases
...........
* periodicals and bound comic books with ISBNs
* periodicals without ISBNs but substantially similar to books (e.g., perfectbound literary magazines), although they should be typed as "periodical" in the work: media type field
* serialized, web-only editions that have been subsequently published as completed works
* short stories published online (the format should be "ebook")
* audio productions, not recordings of theatrical productions (the format should be "audiobook")
* podcasts of books"

Bige Laura, I really liked that book by Jonasson. Afterwards I also read Hitman Anders and My Grandmother Sends Her Regards but they weren't as good.

I heard The 100 Year-Old Man is very entertaining, though.

Leaderboard updated.

Please make sure you update the total at the top of your post; if you do not I might not have the right number in the leaderboard summary below!
Also, please make sure to edit your original post, do NOT comment again for every new book you wish to add to the challenge. Thank you!

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hats off to Stella, Brian, Caraina and Cheryl!

And to everybody else! :-)

daniela (daniela_nieblina) Hmmm... I think some people are just writing in the name of the books they want to read. Stella has various books listed, but only one has a date and is bold. Its something I thought about doing, but decided against it since it would be too complicated for myself to keep track of.

Interesting consideration. Trying to help I figured what follows.

After you mentioned this, I went to read Stella's message (148). Actually, she is not claiming to have read all those books, because if we look at the score at the header, it says 1/26.

She may be doing what Daniela thought of, or completely forgettingt to update the score. But then she'd have forgotten to insert ALL the dates as well, which is unlikely.

I checked and Stella hasn't posted on the other challenges, but then it could just be a choice.

The best thing would be for Stella herself to clarify the situation, if she's following this thread.

Or a contact with her by Kasey, maybe.
