CBRetriever | 6113 comments the othe way is to just search for them on GoodReads and then add them to your shelves one by one

DoodlePanda Well that's what I've done so far :)
If I knew I could have done it automatically I would have of course, but it's done now

Trike Calibre is both free and awesome.

Can we include wine and G&T?

Nope, were embracing the cliche with this one.

You put gin & tonic in your wine?

All right, everyone to Esther’s house; time for an intervention.

Yes! Everyone to Esther's for cocktails I mean...what Trike said.

To keep this book related, I just saw a drink inspired by The Magicians that was like a regular (ie not frozen) blood orange margarita with a Malbec float.

WHY!!!

message 359: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I'm not sure if this has been answered, but what is the minimum page limit?

I had no idea what any of that meant, so I looked it up. Sounds even more horrible than a turducken.

Oh ok, so I can use a 15 page short story? I have quite a few shorter reads on my Kindle. I feel like that would be cheating though?

Nope! The various multipliers should keep that from providing too great an advantage. Have at thee, short stories!

the length matters a bit in that you will get no length points for them, but a 300+ page book can gain a lot of points

300 pages/10 hours - 15 points
500 pages/17 hours - 75 points
750 pages/25 hours - 150 points
1000 pages/33 hours - 300 points

I have quite a few in my list for the 150 & 300 point page counts and a lot of 75 point books. I also have a lot of shorter no point books of less than 300 pages, so i won't gain as much for them. I will reduce my pile faster, so it kinda evens out after a while

message 367: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I have included short stories because I want to get them read and I feel missing out on page count points will even things up.

message 368: by Anna (last edited Jan 08, 2018 07:12AM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I haven't double checked that 54 is the exact number of unread physical books I still have, but I made a tentative plan of reading 24 of them, and the other 30 are leaving the house unread. Of the 24, the majority I'll read in a different edition, because so many are translated editions. There are very few of those 24 that I actually want to read, so it's possible even more will have to go.

message 369: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Thanks for adding the (1/yr) and (1/bk) information in the first post, Sarah Anne. The "total owned books read" was causing some minor confusion for me, and now it's all cleared up.

message 370: by Kristin B. (new)

Kristin B. Bodreau (krissy22247) | 726 comments It's already not looking good for me for the 500 bonus points. I started the year at 285 on my TBR shelf. I've read two books and am working on a third. My TBR is 289...

(I know some folks are using their count of actual owned books for this number, but I have so many ebooks that I've gotten over the years that I don't even want to imagine trying to keep track of all of them. So I'm just using the number of books that I have listed as want to read.)

message 371: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I spent a long time adding the unread books I own on my Kindle to a separate shelf as I had no clue how many there were. It's made it a lot easier for me to choose what to read next, and it makes it easter when I do reading challeges that are focused on the cover :)
It took ages though, it turns out I have over 500 unread Kindle books...

I did the same thing. It does help in that moment of indecision between books. I'm strating a GoodReads shelf for the same purpose as I have books in ither formats, but It might take me the whole year to finish it. No bonus points for me.

Hey great and powerful mods,
We should get points just for knowing how many books we own. Yes?

You do, in that if your TBR shrinks you get 500 points! Gotta know where you're starting to see where you end ;-D

Another hilarious side effect of this challenge-- The ads on my GR right now are imploring me to add a book that seems kind of interesting to my TBR and I'm like "WHO SENT YOU! Saboteur!"

I have 2,009 items in my kindle library according to my Amazon account. I don't even want to think about trying to sort through that. lol. I had a problem with downloading every Fantasy freebie when I first got my Kindle.

I also did this, anything that said fantasy or scifi and was free, I downloaded. I went through everything last year and deleted most of them. I did read some of the freebies, but not many of them were worth it. I've since downloaded more freebies, but now I look at the blurbs first.

message 377: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I have 2300 and I'm also not sure what to do. I was hoping I could neatly import into a spreadsheet but it appears not.

message 378: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments What about just using a subset of ebooks... Like, say, sorting by date purchased or date added and using 50 of them for the challenge.

If you read 12 of the 50 but add 4, you still come out ahead - without having to track/catalogue hundreds of intangible files.

Beth | 211 comments I've just edited message 86 with my first owned book read, but the book is 468 pages - am I supposed to round up or down? (300 pages, for 15 points, or 500 pages, for 75?)

Thanks!

message 382: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments it's between 300 and 500, so i would presume it's 15 points. That's what I'm using.

Sarah | 3915 comments I got 40 points for Twelve Days. I think I should have given a 200 point bonus for reading books that totally suck.

message 389: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments That would be nice - I don't have high hopes for some of the books on my TBR (they came as part of a Humble Bundle). I'm hoping to finish by bedtime reading by the end of the year:

William Styron, The Collected Novels: Lie Down in Darkness, Set This House on Fire, The Confessions of Nat Turner, and Sophie's Choice

I didn't care for the first one, the second one is going slow and I have hopes for the last two (I bought it for The Confessions of Nat Turner. The collections was marked down to $2.99 so I bought the whole thing. It should net me 325 points if I finish it and I'm about 26% through it over 3-4 months, so I might not make it.

message 390: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I'm kinda glad you didn't, as that would have tempted me to finish really bad reads, and I'm now at a place where I have realized that life is too short for that :)

message 391: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda Saying that, I just finished a really bad one, so who am I kidding :P

message 392: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I rarely do either. I just kept thinking it would get interesting. Plus I paid $12.99 for it! I never pay more than $10 for a book.

I did think about giving points for star ratings but i thought that might influence ratings.

No, please no

Jesse Ventura's Marijuana Manifesto: How Lies, Corruption, and Propaganda Kept Cannabis Illegal = 4.5 star
Dhalgren = 3.5

I have to pick a Clive Cussler book to read. I'm not excited. But I have basically all of them pre-2012, thanks to a family member.

I would also like points for reading books in other languages. I think that's the only way I'm going to finish Le Comte de Monte-Cristo I en francais.

message 395: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I'm thinking the years owned points should have been a per year thing. Like 15 points per year owned. I'm annoyed by ones I've owned two years.

message 396: by Sarah (last edited Jan 13, 2018 05:49PM) (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Finished Horseman, Pass By - 50 points (1 year, group read, turned into a movie, cat in lap)

It's also a TBR Cleanup book.

I'd love that for the books I purchased prior to 1985......

480 points instead of 150

If you 'have' to read a Clive Cussler book, my suggestion would be Treasure Treasure (Dirk Pitt, #9) by Clive Cussler

It is a little different than most of his others and I found it enjoyable. Might not mean you do, but it is just a suggestion.
