I imported all my Kindle books into GoodReads, so the count was pretty easy.

Mine are not Kindle books, but epub-format. Does this work too?

Your methods might work for some but with me since I didn't start until late Nov. or so of last year my went from 0 to +200 or more. Seems like mine keeps growing isn't it suppose to go down not up.

message 256: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda I will be doing this challenge as well, it should fit nicely with my goal to read more of the hoarded books I have... And it mixes well with the other challenges I'm doing too :)

message 257: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda "read with a cat/dog on your lap" - does this count once per book?

We didn't do this challenge last year, John.

Once per book, yep. The tea/coffee one is also once per book.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I'm curious about this item as well: "Read at least one book in each of the three formats: print, ebook, audio - 25 points"

Not sure how this one is supposed to be calculated... is it a one time bonus when we hit the 3 types, or can we add it EVERY time we hit the trifecta?

Example: I've read one print book, and one audio, so if I read an ebook next, I can claim +25 points.

Would I then be able to claim it again when I read another set of print + ebook + audio?

Which one is this here? I'm so confused with all the challenges going on. And right off the bat I'm in trouble as I don't own a dog and cats I'm allergic to so don't have one of them either.

So is it the same book in 3 formats? Or just 3 different books?

message 263: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Hmm... Well... I interpreted it to mean at least one book in print, one book in audio, and one book in ebook. It seems counterproductive to the challenge to require a single book to be acquired in 3 different formats and read 3 times to get the points.

But I could be misinterpreting it, so... Mods?

message 264: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Becky is correct. The idea for tht one is to clear out one of each from your collection. Sarah is going to update a few things that we hope will clarify some of the common questions we've been seeing :)

message 265: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments OK cool... is it a one time point value, or can we claim it each time we do the three formats?

Becky wrote: "OK cool... is it a one time point value, or can we claim it each time we do the three formats?"

Sorry, missed that question. This is a one-timer. Sarah says "You read one book of any kind of each format. If you read one print, one ebook, and listen to one audio over the course of the year then you get that 25 point bonus."

That's OK, I'll miss out on the Coffee/Tea points and I'm a mineral water/soda drinker

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments I love that you can count GNs and audiobooks for this challenge, since I don't count GNs in my GoodReads annual challenge and I've been wanting to try an audiobook service for a while. Getting audio versions of DTBs I already own would whittle down the backlog, too!

Also, thanks to the person who created the spreadsheet for this challenge and posted it on google. I copied it into Excel and it will be a great tool for tracking my progress over the year.

More work than that in my house. I would have to go out and buy some first. Too much effort. I will drink the water and call it good.

I was reading an online comic where one of the Characters was named Minmax. As a 1st level character, he had a strength of 20. Of course, the Cleric worshipped the God Walt, who was the DM.

So, like, are there ways besides making a spreadsheet that we can earn points before reading a single book??

(just trying to join the fun, I know the discussion was in jest!)

But really, my prediction is that in a very little while I will drift into doing things in a type B manner (points? oh yeah, I should update this thing now and then eh?), because that is my natural state in reality...

Haha yes, if you rate your enthusiasm for a book on a scale of 1-10, get that many points if you hold it. Unless it's Tuesday, then you only get points for books with a level 2 enthusiasm...

(also kidding!)

Yea, I love the spreadsheet Dazrin made, but likely this will be a bit more casual for me, too. There's no wrong way to play!

Donald | 240 comments Ellen wrote: "I would like points for making a spread sheet. That was way outside my comfort level. lol"

I will admit to doing my own spreadsheet for this...

...the damning thing is that it was just another tab on the existing "Books" spreadsheet I use to do stuff like monitoring my library book situation.

I miss UBRS. :( I remember having to kite the boss the first time I did it... except I'd broken my hand, so was trying to do it in a cast.

Melanie | 1603 comments Mod
Pretty sure you just need to impress the mods in some way or whine loudly enough to “earn” yourself extra points.

Plus, the points are on the honor system. So your mineral water can totally be tea if you write tea on the cup before you drink it. Sarah’s cat is apparently too busy watching YouTube to spy on you to verify that it was actually tea.

In the end, and I’m sure the mods will agree, the purpose is have have fun and enjoy yourself as you read the books you already own.

message 295: by Ellen (new)

I know, thanks for clarifying. My question was about the fact that I don't know how to import my e-books to GR, if they are not in kindle-format. Do I need to have the data in an excel-sheet?

Now to me they shouldn't be included it makes it easy that way.

message 299: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments some of the GNs are longer and contain more words than Kindle books. In most of the rest of the world they are considered books and adults regularly read them.

I agree that most of the time they are easy and quick, but it works out in the end with the way this challenge is structured.

A novel will take a bit longer, but you'll get a page count point boost.
A GN will be quick, but only get completion points.
