I think so... I need to do an inventory. It's been a while and I have purchased much.

This is a killer spreadsheet. Well done!

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Heh! Grey Sister just became availble for pre-order on Audible. 5 points for me! Of course I totally f-up and finished Touch 3 days early which loses me 25 points.

Sam (Sassyowlreads) (sassyowlreads) | 16 comments This isn't originally my spreadsheet but I did a lot of work to make it more usable. That being said, I recommend hiding columns you don't want to use instead of deleting!

Damn, Dazrin, I think this spreadsheet is approximately 800 times cooler than the one I was gonna make. Nicely done!

Sam, thank you! That's a great template, too. Efffffff now that the hard part is already done, I might have to join in. rarrrrrrrhr

Well, hopefully Grey Sister becomes a group read :) You could always wait until the first and relisten to that last scene in Touch. Then you "finished" it in 2018.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments One last dumb question here:

Series
First book in a series - 5 points
Any subsequent book in a series - 10 points
Fifth book in a series - 20 points
Tenth book in a series - 30 points
Finish a series - 15 points

I am presuming that if you read books 1-3 of a series in 2017 and 4-5 in the series in 2018, you would get points for books 4-5? In other words, you don't have to read the first book in a series in the same year as the subsequent books to get points for the subsequent ones read in 2018?

I'm almost done with my list/spreadsheet with 358 TBR and 8 currently reading

message 161: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yep, that's right.

Also, I would include a book that is the last available in a series as a last book. This is for people who read books like Dresden Files.

Thank you as I have several that will qualify as that. More editing to do and then I have to add the DTBs to the list (there aren't as many as I thought).

message 163: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Have fun :)

message 164: by Trike (new)

Trike Do graphic novels count?

message 165: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Definitely.

message 166: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Now that I think about the fact that graphics get series points I'm thinking about all the ones that I own and have never read...

I guess next year is a good time to catch up.

message 167: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments I keep adding to my TBR pile .... This exercise led me to find that several of my series had additional books in them, so I'm up to 358 with 8 currently unfinished for a total of 366. plus at least two HB books.

message 168: by Becky (last edited Dec 30, 2017 10:37PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Don't feel bad, CBRetriever... I'm starting with 467 owned physical books, 407 ebooks, and 52 purchased audiobooks. All to be read.

I'll be thrilled if I get through 10% of them this year.

message 169: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Err... make that 53 audiobooks.

message 170: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I am dithering about buying 2 books I need for 2018 book club reads.
Really I should get them before midnight tonight.

message 171: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I have moved all my non-narrative non-fiction so now according to GR I own 352 books as yet unread.
This doesn't include most of my Agatha Christie collection and about half my e-books.

I'd not count "mandatory" purchases toward this specific challenge, whether completing them or buying them. Maybe you could find them at the library? I wouldn't count textbooks for a class, either. But I'll let the boss speak definitively on that one, should she want to!

I am very happy to read that graphic novels count. While I won't ever count them in my GR challenge, all those manga volumes I have lying around unread could be a gold mine for this thread!

message 175: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I'm counting mandatory purchases. I've done just a few of those myself.

Actually, I have an audio credit at the moment.... I suppose I should use that today.

message 176: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I still here 5 audible credits. I should use them today. I'm sure I can find something. :P

message 177: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yeah, Becky!

message 178: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments cripes, I forgot audio books - I have a Humble Bundle from a while back. Some of these I've never heard of, but maybe I'll finally read (listen) to Junky

The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
Stolen by Lucy Christopher
Abandon by Meg Cabot
Junky by William S. Burroughs
Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony
True Grit by Charles Portis
Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean by Justin Somper
The Orange Eats Creeps by Grace Krilanovich

message 179: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Sarah Anne wrote: "Yeah, Becky!"

Welp... I only had 4 left, and have made my selections, and now will be NOT buying any new books in 2018 because I should probably save some for the rest of humanity. Or something.

Final count:

To-Read_Owned: 467
To-Read_Ebook: 407
To-Read_Audio: 57

931 books total. Sheesh.

message 180: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Satanic Verses and True Grit were two of my favorite reads this year. SV is weird and confusing. TG was a fabulous audio.

message 181: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments I'm not going to get anywhere near the top but I do have a fair few physical owned I want to knock off so am looking at this curiously.

Any thoughts on free eBooks? I consider them lesser beings because I haven't put any investment into them but I still own them - there's no physical/storage investment (unlike free physical books) and there's no financial investment (unlike paid eBooks), so I don't feel like I actually "own" them.

message 182: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I consider ebooks, free or not, the same way as other books. I have acquired them, via whatever method, and have them in some sort of possession (storage) for reading whenever I like. So I consider them to be owned for challenges like this, as much as ebooks can be owned.

I actually consider free ebooks that are independent, DRM-free downloads and not associated with, say, Amazon or B&N etc purchases, to be MORE "ownable" than those purchased books are. For example. if you read the T&C for a kindle purchase, you're really only purchasing the rights to USE the file, and Amazon reserves the right to remove or alter or do what they want with the ebook even though you've paid for it.

The benefit of Kindle purchases though is that it's cloud based and recoverable (as long as the files are available), but if your computer dies or your hard drive crashes, you lose all of the files you might've downloaded. Pros and cons to everything. :)

message 183: by Cheryl (last edited Dec 31, 2017 02:33PM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I consider free e-books that authors have sent to me or given me a code for as 'owned.' But I haven't catalogued them here because I really am totally focused on DTBs.
But anyway, re' Project Gutenberg, Open Library, et al, no, not owned.
My opinion.

And, yeah, I've purchased only one, maybe two kindle books because that T&C 'lease' condition deeply troubles me.

message 184: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments Cheryl wrote: "But anyway, re' Project Gutenberg, Open Library, et al, no, not owned. "

Yeah, that was the kind of thing I was thinking of.

message 185: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments OK, final totals

Kindle = 359
Kindle Currently Reading = 7
Audio = 11
Paper Version = 12

Total TBR = 389 which is far, far too many

message 186: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 38 comments Final totals:
Audio - 44
Kindle - 152
Paper - 144
Final total owned books to be read looks to be 340.
I’ll be glad to get 1/3 of these read.

Good luck and happy New Year to all!

message 187: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Question... the page count/length point value starts at 300 pages/10 hours... If a book is shorter than that, do we not get any points for that criteria?

I'm OK with that if it's the way it will work, but just want to check.

Finished: The Dark Tower: The Drawing of the Three - The Prisoner - 128 pages
Owned = 25
Owned for 1+ years = 10
12th in Series = 30
Read with coffee = 5

Total: 70

message 188: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments Yep, no points.

message 189: by Raven (new)

Raven (andromeda_horse) This challenge seems interesting! I read all the books I owned, I think I will just keep buying as I complete the challenge? It's not mandatory for one to own a particular book for 1 or 1+ years right? There are almost no bookstores at my place, so I mostly read e-books, and I buy them as per my need. It's my first time to do any challenge besides the main book shelf challenge...

message 190: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments This challenge is for books that you own prior to 1/1/18. A lot of us wanted to place priority on books we own and haven't read.

message 191: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments Beth wrote: "Maybe you could find them at the library? .."

I don't live in a ENglish speaking country so even if I was home when I the library is open I doubt I could find what I need for a challenge.

message 192: by Ophelia (new)

Ophelia Gunn (opheliagunn) | 12 comments Oh my days - I've just seen this challenge!
I've got (like most of you), a veritable mountain of books in all formats that I haven't got around to reading yet (and that I really need to add to GR).

I need to go sort my pitiful GR shelves out. Right now.

Wow, love this spreadsheet. Thank you so much for sharing!

message 194: by Lara (new)

Lara | 16 comments I'm in too. However, I own sooo many books I'm not sure I can count them easily. Maybe I can compare the number read to the number added (purchased and freebies)?

message 195: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Sarah Anne wrote: "Yep, no points."

Thanks :)

And yes, also thanks to Dazrin for the spreadsheet share. It's great! :D

message 196: by Bill's (new)

Bill's Chaos (wburris) I plan to spend the year cleaning up my physical bookshelves, but I am too lazy to count how many I have and add up points. Many of them have been included in the TBR cleanup.

message 197: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (meg76) | 5 comments I've got a couple thousand... Some I have had for forty years or more. This is going to be interesting... I usually collect what looks interesting, with the idea of having them available when I am out of my favorites... I guess my family will be happy if I clean my books off of their bookshelves... I just hate to part with my precious-es... I guess I can start with the paperbacks... that should take me all year...

message 198: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Margaret wrote: " I usually collect what looks interesting, with the idea of having them available when I am out of my favorites ..."

Me too. It's kinda a good thing we've moved a few times, as I cull in anticipation of the move each time. Thank goodness for GR reviews to help me decide!

message 199: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Good luck, Margaret!

message 200: by Alyssia (new)

Alyssia Cooke (secre) | 11 comments This so needs to happen!! And I love the idea of just keeping track of read vs bought rather than counting what’s on the shelves which would take forever and is likely impossible as my books are split between three houses!!!
