This isn't originally my spreadsheet but I did a lot of work to make it more usable. That being said, I recommend hiding columns you don't want to use instead of deleting!

Well, hopefully Grey Sister becomes a group read :) You could always wait until the first and relisten to that last scene in Touch. Then you "finished" it in 2018.

One last dumb question here:

Series
First book in a series - 5 points
Any subsequent book in a series - 10 points
Fifth book in a series - 20 points
Tenth book in a series - 30 points
Finish a series - 15 points

I am presuming that if you read books 1-3 of a series in 2017 and 4-5 in the series in 2018, you would get points for books 4-5? In other words, you don't have to read the first book in a series in the same year as the subsequent books to get points for the subsequent ones read in 2018?

I'm almost done with my list/spreadsheet with 358 TBR and 8 currently reading

Also, I would include a book that is the last available in a series as a last book. This is for people who read books like Dresden Files.

I keep adding to my TBR pile .... This exercise led me to find that several of my series had additional books in them, so I'm up to 358 with 8 currently unfinished for a total of 366. plus at least two HB books.

I'll be thrilled if I get through 10% of them this year.

I have moved all my non-narrative non-fiction so now according to GR I own 352 books as yet unread.
This doesn't include most of my Agatha Christie collection and about half my e-books.

I'd not count "mandatory" purchases toward this specific challenge, whether completing them or buying them. Maybe you could find them at the library? I wouldn't count textbooks for a class, either. But I'll let the boss speak definitively on that one, should she want to!

I am very happy to read that graphic novels count. While I won't ever count them in my GR challenge, all those manga volumes I have lying around unread could be a gold mine for this thread!

I'm not going to get anywhere near the top but I do have a fair few physical owned I want to knock off so am looking at this curiously.

Any thoughts on free eBooks? I consider them lesser beings because I haven't put any investment into them but I still own them - there's no physical/storage investment (unlike free physical books) and there's no financial investment (unlike paid eBooks), so I don't feel like I actually "own" them.

I consider ebooks, free or not, the same way as other books. I have acquired them, via whatever method, and have them in some sort of possession (storage) for reading whenever I like. So I consider them to be owned for challenges like this, as much as ebooks can be owned.

I actually consider free ebooks that are independent, DRM-free downloads and not associated with, say, Amazon or B&N etc purchases, to be MORE "ownable" than those purchased books are. For example. if you read the T&C for a kindle purchase, you're really only purchasing the rights to USE the file, and Amazon reserves the right to remove or alter or do what they want with the ebook even though you've paid for it.

The benefit of Kindle purchases though is that it's cloud based and recoverable (as long as the files are available), but if your computer dies or your hard drive crashes, you lose all of the files you might've downloaded. Pros and cons to everything. :)

I consider free e-books that authors have sent to me or given me a code for as 'owned.' But I haven't catalogued them here because I really am totally focused on DTBs.
But anyway, re' Project Gutenberg, Open Library, et al, no, not owned.
My opinion.

And, yeah, I've purchased only one, maybe two kindle books because that T&C 'lease' condition deeply troubles me.

This challenge seems interesting! I read all the books I owned, I think I will just keep buying as I complete the challenge? It's not mandatory for one to own a particular book for 1 or 1+ years right? There are almost no bookstores at my place, so I mostly read e-books, and I buy them as per my need. It's my first time to do any challenge besides the main book shelf challenge...

I plan to spend the year cleaning up my physical bookshelves, but I am too lazy to count how many I have and add up points. Many of them have been included in the TBR cleanup.

I've got a couple thousand... Some I have had for forty years or more. This is going to be interesting... I usually collect what looks interesting, with the idea of having them available when I am out of my favorites... I guess my family will be happy if I clean my books off of their bookshelves... I just hate to part with my precious-es... I guess I can start with the paperbacks... that should take me all year...

This so needs to happen!! And I love the idea of just keeping track of read vs bought rather than counting what’s on the shelves which would take forever and is likely impossible as my books are split between three houses!!!
