18: A book with a location in the title
Newtown: An American Tragedy, only 15 minutes away from my house :-(I also thought to try and re-read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
My choices are a mix of literal places and more abstract places...
I'll be choosing between:
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone
Looking for Alaska
In the Woods
Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood
The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago
St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves

It's stretching it a bit but could I do A Court of Wings and Ruin for this? If not, Murder on the Orient Express or Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s

I think Court could be counted as a location!

I think Court could be counted as a location!
I'm in the process of reading 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King for this one. Location, location, location. This book is definitely steeped in it, and King uses the setting to its fullest. I'm loving it so far, but it might take me longer than a week to finish. I finished a couple of shorter works so I would have wiggle room for the longer ones.
I listened to A Gentleman in Moscow on audio and it was great! I loved the character of the Count. Also liked learning some history of the Soviet Union!Goska wrote: "I'm going to read A Gentleman in Moscow
I've heard it's good! Has anyone read it?"
For this category I am going to read Glass Town by Steven Saville. I've read several rave reviews for this book; I hope I love it too!
A Gentleman in Moscow is an excellent book! I already read it last year. At some point, I would like to re-read it and listen by audio. I hope it is made into a movie someday.
- What are you reading for this category?Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery
- Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Absolutely - even though she leaves at times, every scene in this book is set in and around the village of Avonlea
Chrissy wrote: "I am considering Idaho, Antarctica, and Moloka'i to start with... any feedback on any of these?"I read Moloka'i last year, it's a fantastic book, I'd 100% recommend it. Be prepared for tears though. I really ought to try and read more by the same author, it was beautifully written.
I'll be reading Looking for Alaska for this prompt - I like that although there's a location in the title, in the story it's a person not a place.
What are you reading for this category?Manhattan Beach
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Yes, it does. It's not the Manhattan Beach in southern California, but the one in Brooklyn. Manhattan Beach is not in Manhattan! :)
What are you reading for this category? I read Firefly Lane last week.
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Kind of, the early part of the book takes place on Firefly Lane, but the remainder follows the two best friends who lived there through several decades of their lives.

I loved it. One of my favorite reads last year.
I did an audio of A Gentleman in Moscow. It is set in Moscow. I wish I liked it more... I had heard such good things!! It did have its moments that were good.. but overall not my favorite.
What are you reading for this category? A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute.Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting? It starts off in the UK, but Alice refers to Alice Springs, Australia. Not sure if the story actually takes place there. I'll get back to you later on...

Love, love, love this book! Obama recently named it as one of his favorite books from last year. I think it's going to be turned into a mini-series at some point, too.
What are you reading for this category? I’m reading The Paris Wife, by Paula McLain.
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
I believe Paris is one of the backdrops in the novel.
A book already in my Nook library in my "want to read shelf" and the movie won awards. Never saw the movie, I usually prefer the book, so I am hoping this will be the case for The Budapest House.
I have been going a bit backward this year. At first I began choosing books that will fit the prompts, but have since changed to just reading whatever has caught my attention (mostly finishing up series I added to my shelf years back) and then working to fit the books to a prompt!!For this I read The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
It is a place referenced in the book regarding a past event. I can not say more without spoilers. :)
I read Middlemarch by George Eliot. It's around 900 pages long, but worth the effort! Eliot masterfully portrays the inner lives of residents of the fictional town Middlemarch.
I read American Street by Ibi Zoboi; it's the street the main character lives on in this book and it comes into play quite a bit in-story.
I read Stephen Florida by Gabe Habash as my Week 18 selection. The location embedded in the title does not reflect the setting of the story but rather represents an identity.
- What are you reading for this category? Paris for One and Other Stories by Jojo Moyes- Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting? Yes
I'm picking up On Chesil Beach today for this prompt. I wasn't a big fan of Ian McEwan's more famous work Atonement but decided I will give him another try. Plus I heard OCB has been made into a film due to be released later this year so it's always good to read the book first!
I read "Desperation" by Stephen King for this one. Took quite a while to get through but I did enjoy it.
I'm reading The Rebels of Ireland which is the sequel to The Princes of Ireland and tells the story of Ireland since the 1500s.
Sophie wrote: "I'm reading The Rebels of Ireland which is the sequel to The Princes of Ireland and tells the story of Ireland since the 1500s."Sophie- I didn’t know there was a sequel! I just picked up a copy of The Princes of Ireland at Goodwill last week. Rutherford is my favorite historical fiction writer.
I am listening to A Gentleman in Moscow. So far I am really enjoying it, especially the humor.
I think some people are considering general locations to be a location (town, city, state, etc.). So it's just how you want to interpret it for this one.
- What are you reading for this category? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin since I'm going through ASOIAF withdrawal waiting for TWOW to be released. 8-(
- Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Yep.
Also, this was a very good book and now I need more Dunk & Egg in my life.
Pam wrote: "Sophie- I didn’t know there was a sequel! I just picked up a copy of The Princes of Ireland at Goodwill last week. Rutherford is my favorite historical fiction writer. "Sorry Pam, I'm just seeing your comment now. Yes it is a two-part novel of epic proportion! ;) I also absolutely love Rutherfurd and want to read all of his books!
What are you reading for this category? The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting? Yes, Malabar Hill, is a hillock in southern Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, an upmarket VVIP residential area
For this one I read Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again. I wasn't expecting to like it but it was surprisingly compelling. It's a non-fiction, so there really wasn't a setting, but yes, it was about America and Trump's ideas on how to improve it.
- What are you reading for this category?I went pretty literal for this because I find it funny: First Grave on the Right
- Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
It's forced into the narrative itself in an awkward way, but slightly awkward humour book about death actually kinda nails it.
What are you reading for this category?Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead by Sara Gran
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Yes, it refers to New Orleans after Katrina.
My second book for this prompt was The Thirteenth House by Sharon Shinn.
I read Canvey Island by James RuncieDoes the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Yes it does. This is an island connected to Essex UK, which is the county where I live. This island was flooded in 1953 and many lives were lost. I worked with a woman whose family were rescued from the roof of their home. The book starts with the flood and follows the life of one boy after the flood. It was more of a love story, which I don't usually read, but I did quite enjoy it.
I am excited that someone just recommended The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland
What are you reading for this category? The Semi-Detached House - Emily Eden
Does the location in the title reflect the actual book setting?
Yes, the story revolves around two families, the higher-class Chesters and the merchant class Hopkinsons who share a semi-detached house.
