One of my very favorites....I read it twice....6 years apart!

I won that too and found it a good read. Was nice to see the detective from a more human perspective rather than being the usual workaholic no matter what type.

Deborah Shaw (shawbird) | 4 comments You guys are great, I love reading about those books you have read and loved. I just found out that I had money in the state I used to live in and when I get it, I think I'm getting an e-reader and will be checking out quite a number of the books many of you have liked. Thanks.

message 654: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sharpe's Triumph was great if you like that sort of thing - historical battle told through a fictional character.

message 655: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Shaw (shawbird) | 4 comments Thanks Jim, like most and historical battles are always good, especially with fictional characaters. just added interest.

I really like Dennis Lehane's books!"

Jim and Anglea - I'm a fan of his too and recently picked up his latest, Moonlight Mile. I believe the female character is the same as in Gone Baby Gone, only now she is 16.....

message 657: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) In another group, someone asked me about another book of Lehane's that features both Patrick & Angie but is set 10 years later. I didn't look into it since I have a huge TBR pile & am trying hard not to buy any new books until I've knocked it down to a more manageable level.

message 658: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments I recently finished Watchmen and The Color Purple, btoh of which were superb reads and both lived up to their reputations, which makes a nice change :-D

Jim, yes, that's Moonlight Mile they were talking about.

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments Moonlight Mile is just calling out to me!!!

Diane (dianedj) Angela and Jim -- Thanks to Jim for reminding me that I had Moonlight Mile at home TBR. I started it this morning, Angela, if you want to join me. I love the smart-aleckey 'voice' of Kenzie and I'm into it right away.

message 662: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I just finished Matched by Ally Condie and I thought it was amazing and before that I had just read Heart shaped box by Joe Hill which was creepy at time but also a really good book.

message 663: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I'm listening to Matched on audio right now. Glad to hear it's good!

message 664: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished Shadow Kiss, the 3d in the Vampire Academy series. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much better this book has been. Similar to the Harry Potter series, it started out YA, but each book has developed more depth.

message 665: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I've just finished Poison Study and enjoyed it a lot. It was engaging and a lighter book than recent reads, so made a welcome change.

message 666: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I just finished Magic Studyand really liked it...great series...can't wait to read Fire Study!

message 667: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin was pretty good - 4 stars. I had read it before, but it's been a lot of years, probably about the time it was first published in 1982. That's long enough that I didn't recognize the book, author or blurb, but I did still remember parts of the book vividly. That says a lot for the writing.

message 668: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I'm really surprised....my live book club read The Elegance of the Hedgehogand I had no interest in reading it from some reviews I had read...well I listened to the audio for our meeting tonight and guess what? I really enjoyed it...4 stars! Now, there were some parts of Rene's dialougue that I didn't pay much attention to as they went over my head...or I felt they were just indulgent rants...but, most of the book I enjoyed...it was funny and it was also sad....and while many others seemed not to....I liked these characters a lot!

I'm glad you liked this book. It's on my bookshelf at home, but I'm apprehensive due to all the reviews out there that say they did not enjoy the book.

message 678: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished Surrender None, an ebook & Thereby Hangs a Tail, an audio book. I really liked both of them, 4 stars each.

message 680: by Shane (new)

Shane (Shaneybobs) | 80 comments I've just read War of the Worlds. It was great! Reading History of Mr Polly now which is shaping up to pretty good. After that gonna read The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test.

Oooh, glad to hear you liked it Kerri! I've been putting that one off, but now I think I'll move it up on my TBR :-)

message 683: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I finished You're Next by Gregg Hurwitz yesterday. A really good thriller - the best I've read for ages!

message 684: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 29 comments I've just finished The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter after a friend of mine highly recommended her and she was right. If you like gothic style writing or prefer the more traditional fairy and folk tale stories I would highly recommend this book. Can't wait to hunt down some other Angela Carter books now...

message 692: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Falconer (librarycrystal) | 4 comments The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry-I was skeptical when I started it but I ended up reading it twice, it was so good!

message 693: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Crystal wrote: "The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry-I was skeptical when I started it but I ended up reading it twice, it was so good!"

Crystal...I just read it for my live club and then had to miss the meeting..I would love to discuss it with you if you're up for that....we could open a thread.

message 694: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn Rice (marilynlrice) | 4 comments Recently finished 'The Pearl' and 'Cannery Row', two of Steinbeck's novels. Both play on the emotions, are full of symbolism and have an emphasis on morality. JS paints a first class picture of life in his era but, in my opinion, all of his works come second to the epic 'Grapes of Wrath'.

message 695: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) Just finished Nefertiti by Michelle Moran. I loved it!

message 696: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 220 comments I finished Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks this afternoon. I loved it!!

message 697: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) Jo - you're back!! Yay!! :-)

message 698: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I just finished Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens which I recently won from a Firstreads giveaway. I was so excited to win this book because I really enjoyed Stevens' first book - Still Missing. This book was every bit as entertaining and suspenseful as the first one. It's the story of one woman's search for her birth parents and her horrifying discovery that her biological father is a serial killer who is still at large. Great story! I would reccommend it to anyone who likes a good suspense novel.

Gemma (Passion for Novels) (passionfornovels) | 2 comments Aths / Athira wrote: "I just finished Water for Elephants and W.O.W! This is the best book I have read to date! What an epic! I'd recommend this book to all, and if you haven't tried it, you should!"

I have also just finished Water for Elephants and it's amazing, certainly jumped into my top 10! It was just so different to other novels I've read, if it wasn't reccommended it wasn't something I would have picked off the shelf!
