Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Golden wedding anniversary Desley. 😀. We are having a lovely meal at home. I love cooking so it’s not a chore. It’s pouring with rain so I’m really not unhappy about going out anywhere and at the moment nowhere is open yet in Wales.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Well, that was an interesting day, about 5 mins after posting this morning, I heard a loud noise, when I went downstairs and opened the door for Lucy, I discovered that my canopy from outside the front door had fallen off - unfortunately it has put a dent in the car door (the one only fixed in March!), luckily it isn't down to the metal and I can live with it, its near the hollow for the car handle anyway. Now need to get rid of said canopy, wiIl have to bash it with a hammer to get it small enough to get it in the car to take it to the tip. I ended up going out with neighbour, it was a unit on an industrial estate that sold ex display furniture. I was tempted with a new TV cabinet but couldn't get that in the car, I did come home with a new cabinet for the girls room, but didn't realise just how much bigger it was, hopefully it will fit! We nipped to Tesco on the way back, so I got more than I would from Lidl, but british cherries, can't wait to tuck into those. While it hasn't stopped raining, it was light enough for getting stuff in and out of the car, motorway was horrendous, glad I wasn't driving.

Aww, nice he did something sweet. Glad you are having a nice meal.

Wow! Glad you were nowhere near it at the time Desley. I've sometimes wondered about those concrete canopies over house doors as I once worked near a shopping centre where the whole thing fell down from above several shops. Luckily it happened at night so there were no casualties.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Morning, got woken up about 5am by the wind, was glad the canopy fell down yesterday, would have done more damage today. It's actually dry, and the damage does look a bit worse today, there are a couple of scratches, but not worth a bodyshop job. Me and Lucy went back to bed after her meds, and were enjoying watching TV, but then Sparkle had a fight with Tigs, so we had to get up. Need to rearrange the girls room to get the new cabinet in this morning, not looking forward to that as back isn't great and it's bed change day too. Nice to see some sun although it isn't supposed to last. I also managed to book a hairdresser app yesterday, going on the 25th, thought I'd have to wait longer to be honest.

Yes, it was a good job me or Lucy was nowhere near it Pam.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning, each. Lucky escape there Desley!

Glad you enjoyed the golden wedding day, Lynne. Yep, looks like we'll be having the home cooked meal too next month. Like you, I enjoy it so it's not a problem and I'm a bit antisocial to enjoy too much pub-lunching. I like to go to the ones that are less well-known which means they're the ones that go under. Oops...

Village pub not considering opening for another month or so.

Hope you all survive the high winds. It's beautiful here, sunny and enticing but the wind's blowing a hoolie.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Blimey Desley! Sounds like a close one!
Lynne so glad you had a good day.
Kath! You too! Wow.
And there’s me thinking McOther and I were doing alright to hit 30 (which we did on 17th June).
It’s blowing a hoolie here. McOther and I have just gone to the shops and got him some new clothes, all black or grey because apparently that’s what modern punks wear! Bless him.

Anyway, he’s happy. Also got to go to church for the first time since March. That was really lovely. Oh and the book has hit 70k and there’s loads in my head for another one. Might hand write that in the garden this afternoon as despite the hoolie it’s blowing, the sun’s out.

Cheers all

MTM

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning each. The wind's died down a bit here so I may well attempt to untangle the climbing peas and harvest what's ready. That'll give me a space (planting opportunity!) for some of the lettuce seedlings I have in a tray in the greenhouse. We've still not eaten all those I planted out in March so we need to get salad-eating!

Submitted a short story for an anthology yesterday.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Still blowing a gale here, I'm getting very fed up with wind. I thought I'd go for lots of bike rides in lockdown, but it seems not. I loathe and detest riding a bike in a hoolie and right now, that's most days. Sigh.

Oh well. At least it's not too cold.

Morning all ...

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Wind finally seems to be dying down, we even had a thunderstorm around tea time yesterday! Working from home today as got a rheumatology app, which was very frustrating. He was an hour and a quarter late, and spent less than 5 mins on the phone with me, suspect as it was 12.35, he just wanted his lunch. First he was convinced I’m on a different medication, then was dismissive of the dosage of the meds I do take! He said he would write to my doc to put me on something different, I couldn’t understand the name of it, and when I asked what this medication would do, the response was ‘help with the pain in your knee and back’ – no discussion of side effects or anything, so have asked the doc not to just prescribe it when the request comes through as I want to know about it before starting taking it. Had a weird thing happen this morning, went to make a brew and there was water all over the worktop, but I can’t work out where from! It happened on Sat as well, I initially thought the kettle had a leak, but there was water in it both times, and when I put the kettle on some kitchen roll for half an hour on Sat, nothing leaked. The only similarity is both times has been girls night out, and Coco has developed an interest in the kitchen, and I did leave water in the washing up bowl last night to soak the recycling. I did check in case it was wee, but fairly sure it isn’t! Got the last Zooplus delivery coming soon so will have to see ratty neighbour as she wanted some stuff too.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Evening all! Haven't posted for a bit but rest assured I am lurking about several times a day, with my mod gun ready to zap any heinous posting :)

Lucky escape there Desley I think, and congrats on your golden anniversary (and the lovely breakfast) Lynne.

New neighbour update - so far the amusement value is still overtaking the annoyance. But it's a close run thing. Latest escapade was them having their front door locks changed (after locking themselves out) and She took it upon herself to have our shared storage cupboard lock changed too. Well OK, not going to make a fuss about that, except I now have only one key for it rather than one each plus a spare as before. However, She phoned me early on Sunday to say she'd thrown her new key out (????!!) and could she borrow mine. Apparently she'd found the key and couldn't remember what it was for - so put it in the bin. A day after the locksmith came.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments OH took a nasty tumble on his walk this morning. Nothing broken thank goodness but a few grazes, bruises and his glasses are a bit bent. I do worry about that happening when he’s off early down in the coast path. He’s got an appointment tomorrow for the optician and he was saying he needed new specs so it’s not too bad.

Had a family reunion viz zoom on my side of the family - from Linda in London through Michigan and California, and down to Mexico City - mostly the women. That was the big event of the weekend.

Have mostly been writing - nice to make progress.

For entertainment value, google 'askew.'

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Haha! Nicely done!
Been tying up the tomatoes again - third time is usually the last - and picking raspberries. Looks like it's about to rain again.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Lucy woke me up at 4.30, poor thing had an upset tummy, and I didn’t really get back to sleep before the alarm went off at 6.30. The water issue definitely isn’t the cats, there was a puddle again today, but the outside wall behind the kettle is bone dry (plus it didn’t rain last night), so the kettle is the only thing that makes sense, although I don’t know how something can leak and still have water in it, although this morning when I went to fill it, a load of condensation dripped out, will try and remember to empty it after my bedtime drink tonight. Physio was late again, she has given me exercises to try and help my back and left it for me to ring her when it has eased, rather than make an unnecessary app. I’ve just realised that I’m tired, I just checked the calendar for Monday’s date, forgetting it is only Tue today! I have at least got one task off my to do list, it might not be the most important one, but its one thing done!

Glad you had a nice family catch up Alicia, and have been able to do some writing. Yes, you could write a great book based on your new neighbour R! Who thinks of changing a communal key without checking with the others? I have to admit to having some keys that I don’t know what they are for, but daren’t throw them away just in case.

message 13966: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments You've got me all curious about the condensation - let us know if it came from the kettle when you're sure, Desley!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! Dismal again, and the council have been resurfacing the road. One of those jobs where they sent the sweeping machine down, the spray it with tar and scatter it with chippings. Problem seems to be that just outside next door's house there's a sign on the road saying Slow 20 mph. As the last resurfacing was asphalt they could spray the sign on. With this chippings job, they can't. So they've left that bit! It looks rather rum, I have to say.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all, I managed to get the car up to the garage yesterday for its delayed annual service and MOT, with the warning light on the whole way. Battery needs replacing :) Only to be told it was booked in for today, not yesterday. So I left it there.

Neighbour has phoned up this morning asking if her SE could come up this afternoon and have a look at our walls. Apparently her latest project is to knock down some internal walls for a new ensuite. A house this age, they're not likely to be anything but loadbearing... Have agreed but I'm not happy - husband will need to hide away in another room (he's self isolating). Not looking forward to all the building work either!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Lucy woke me up at 3.30 having a sneezing fit, I did get some sleep, but feel a bit headachy today. Fairly sure the water issue is the kettle, I remembered to empty it last night and there was no water on the worktop this morning. Going visiting one of our sites this pm, looking forward to it, and glad it got changed to today as it isn’t supposed to rain!

Better a day early than a day late R! Fingers crossed the SE doesn't give the project the go ahead, but at least they are checking it out and not just going ahead.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Oh the project will go ahead once they have their building warrant Desley, definitely. Apparently it's Friday the structural engineer is coming though, not today, I got the wrong end of the stick.

Today I was amused by her Meek Husband and a builder's sack of gravel. They obviously had decided that their driveway wasn't luxuriant enough in its topping, so had some chuckies delivered. Meek Husband spent a couple of hours dispersing the top (sixth maybe?) of the bag with a small shovel. What amused me was the way he stood back to admire every shovelful after he had laid it :D

Can you tell I don't have enough to keep me occupied at the moment?

keep writing it down, there's a novel in here or at least a set of short stories :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Well, I was doing some of the new exercises yesterday and it has helped my back a lot, so as I got back slightly earlier from my site visit, I went for a walk along the canal (12k steps in total!) and not suffering too much today. Lucy didn’t wake me up per se this morning, but I woke up at 5 wondering why I couldn’t move to find she was lying on my legs! No water today, I did leave the lid of the kettle open for a bit after using it and then took it off the base. Was raining this morning, but dry now, so might go for another walk after work. Trying half in the office and half at home today, see how that helps.

At least you are amusing us with the tales R!

I think the bad weather is my fault. I ‘ve made window screens to keep the flies and mosquitoes out so we can leave them open at night without getting bugs in. I’ve got two more to do but since I started it’s not been fit to even open the windows in the daytime.
We actually had the heating on again last night. Unbelievable in July.

Jim | 21809 comments I drove past the local park today.
If you're worried about your health have grandsons not granddaughters :-)
The lads were spread around the skate board park. They weren't formally socially distancing, they were just moving at speed.
Except of course when they weren't moving at speed they were standing next to each other watching somebody else and chatting.
The girls were all sitting or standing in a huddle around the same park bench, about fifteen of them all shoulder to shoulder.

And then they say they're going to split them into 'bubbles' at school

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments This is their first pandemic - why aren't the grownups educating them properly?

NOTHING has changed. No great treatment, no cure, no vaccine. ALL precautions are still necessary. Many things could reopen safely if people would wear masks, etc.

I can't leave here because the local hospitals are all full.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Facemasks are mandatory in shops and enclosed spaces here in Scotland from today. I've been wearing mine inside shops for weeks, I don't understand why it's taken so long to make it compulsory.

Gravel update - admit it, you've been on the edges of your seats waiting - Meek Husband sadly did not make a Proper Job of it. She was huffily rearranging it chip by chip at about 8.30 yesterday morning. There was also quite a lot of door slamming.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Not sure about working half in the office and half at home, while I like the mix of chat and quiet, Lucy was a nightmare, in her head, I’d been out and come back, so should be her slave! Woke up ridiculously early again and actually started work early, I’m struggling to switch off since coming back off furlough! Plus really stiff again today. Being naughty today and having takeaway lunch from local coffee shop, had peanut butter and jam toastie, toffee hot choc and saving my candy floss cuppy cake for later, there are just another 3 sandwiches, 2 cakes and 4 hot choc flavours I want to try. I could have eaten in, but figured as it’s only round the corner, I’d let someone who needs a table have it. Got first of washloads done this morning. Bit disappointed that our virtual happy hours have now ended, wish we had known last week was the last one.

This area was hit early on. In the entire county ( 2600 square miles with a population density of under 200 per square mile) we had two cases yesterday
Remember it's their parents and grandparents first pandemic as well.
As it is, 'excess deaths' continues to drop in spite of coming out of lockdown

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Glad you're in a relatively safe area.

Our local hospitals are full, California is closing down county after county based on rising numbers, and people of little brain are floating conspiracy theories that the government is inserting locator chips in their brains when the swabs are used for tests.

All I can say is that, if true, the government has picked the hardest possible way to get to people ever invented.

I'm staying home. The stress is a bit much.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Morning all, woke up at 6 again, but managed to get a bit more sleep, before I woke up and started thinking about work. Still feel tired, but not enough to sleep. Trying to get loads of washing done while it is nice, so just put some in. Need to go to the tip later with the canopy that fell off and going to do the food shopping on the way back. Supposed to be dry but not overly warm, so might be using my indoor reading spot.

Sorry that things are so bad over there Alicia.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I tried going for a trike ride this morning, but by the time I got to the basement to unlock it, it was too hot - I didn't risk it.

I came back up and used the fourth floor corridor for some exercise pushing myself backward sitting on the walker. Better than nothing, but I'll have to get up very early from now on to get out before the sun has turned the lovely city of Davis into an inferno. At least most days it still gets down before sunrise.

That's almost pleasant. We're going to reach 100F today. I got up before 8, had my trike ride while there's still a breeze, and got back in before the garage heated up enough to be a problem. Doable.

Feel virtuous, but didn't have enough sleep, so that will fell me some time today. Virtue is its own reward, they say. For me, it's another day of NOT turning into stone. I'll take it.

Plus it resets the "I haven't been out of the building in two weeks" button. Psychologically necessary.

Enjoy your weather - or is it accompanied by pounding rain?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Glad you got the trike ride, and helped you mentally, even though it meant you didn't have enough sleep

I cannot take the heat. I did get a nap - just 35 min., but it'll make the difference.

Now lunch - and to the writing! Unless, as what usually happens, the fact that I expended some of my scarce energy in gallivanting about makes it impossible.

But that mental health has been given a soothing dose of fresh air.

I noticed on my ride that the West Pond was entirely dry - the ducks are gone. Hope all their babies made it.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I did finish my fly screens, while I was putting one in place I saw a really odd thing. We’ve got a 5 foot wall the front and I can just see tall people’s heads above it but this person must have been very tall and very very fast. The mans head zoomed past. He must have been travelling at 20 mph at least. I did a double take thinking it was a cyclist on the pavement which annoys me a lot and is happening more and more. As I went up my ladder I saw the man on his ‘machine’. It was just a wheel. Thickish like a mountain bike wheel with a footrest either side of the axle, he was just standing on it balancing, it didn’t have a seat like a unicycle. Just a wheel. It was really fast. It worried me as I back out of our drive in the car and If I can’t see him he can’t see me and at that speed he could do a damage. I ran down our drive a few years ago and a woman on an ordinary bike on the pavement, knocked me down so I’m extremely careful both walking and driving but you don’t expect a gadget like that to go whizzing along.

That's an Electric Unicycle. I belong to an online forum for people who use them. They have a little section for the Airwheel folk like me, who have two wheels and a seat.

Most of the riders are very savvy and careful. If you would back out slowly looking out for pedestrians, that will be good enough to see them and for them to see you.

It's like a Segway minus most of the trappings - the wheels have a powerful computer and battery inside. Very efficient for commuting.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Had a rubbish night sleep, so glad I’m working from home today. It is supposed to rain most of the day, so not sure I’ll get out for a walk after work. I did finally finish my book yesterday, I will blame work for taking 12 days to read 510 pages, but really it was cos the book was slow in the beginning and I did skim read some of the details, I don’t care how to use a computer programme to compare dental impressions, especially when it felt like more than a page! Downside is I have read some of this series years ago and seemingly liked it, so bought the first 6 plus a random one when they were on an author deal, really hope book 2 is better.

Not sure I like the thought of those Lynne!

message 13993: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Thanks Alicia. I shall look out for him but I don’t think he’s one of the careful types, that speed and no protection, no helmet, just tee shirt and shorts - if he comes off that’s serious grazes. The thing that’s worrying about the electric vehicles is the lack of noise too. I don’t have the radio on and I listen almost as much as I look when I’m driving.
Any idea how it’s controlled. There’s no visible hand controls obviously and if you’ve got to balance and operate something with your feet that must be a special technique.
It’s a bit Wild West here for traffic at the moment. There are some really bad drivers. Speed is fine in the right place but built up areas and boy racers are recipes for serious accidents.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I agree Lynne, people seem to have forgotten how to drive with regard to other people over the last three months. Actually quite horrified by some of the road use I have seen lately

The software feeds power to the motor as a response to how you lean: you are doing tiny shifts of your center of gravity. It is very intuitive and lots of fun. I float down the halls. You learn very quickly with two wheels; with just the one it takes a bit. Look on Youtube for how to learn to ride an electric unicycle.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Thank you, Alicia. you must need a strong core and good balance. Not sure I’ve got either anymore.
A few years ago we were driving home in the Jeep - it was steep hills all the way and hairpin bends and we were overtaken by a man on a pushbike. We didn’t realise it was electric and my husband was really impressed by the man’s strength and speed until he found out about electric bikes. not long afterwards we heard he’d been killed in a road accident while cycling.

You only need to be able to sit on a barstool. With your feet solidly on the ground. The Airwheel S8 does the rest - it balances both of us. My balance is fine, but I'm not really challenging it.

It really is this easy (24 sec. Youtube video):
