Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments It’s dry here at last but very breezy. There’s was supposed to be cruise liner coming, the coaches were all there and the choir was singing but no boat appeared I guess it’s too windy for the shuttle boats so they’ve gone elsewhere. I’m not doing much. I feel a bit fluey. When I cough my head hurts a lot.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4839 comments Oddly, it was incredibly windy here in California today, too - though husband and his pals still went for a bike ride, it was planned to take the high winds into account.

Jim | 21812 comments Yesterday was wet, today looks like being brilliantly sunny, tomorrow might be as well, then we've got another wet week ahead of us
Ah the joys of living on an Atlantic coast :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Morning all, sunny here. Eye seems much better, not sure if it is a good thing that the dilating drops aren't' dilating my eye as much as last time, but makes it easier to see! Food festival was a bit disappointing, not helped by the weather! Didn't come home with much, just fudge (struggled to decide what flavour, he does about 20!) and a vegan mushroom pastry which was delicious, nearly went back for a second!

the photo was impressive. It's funny, round here wedding arches aren't 'a thing' and you just don't see them

I did get hit some years ago. Just got a small burn on the back of one hand.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments A lucky escape Will?

Best line from the late lamented BBC Scotland sitcom City Lights - on being told by a fortune teller “You will be hit by lightning”, dopey character Tam replies “whit - again?!”

Been a lovely day here today. Almost like summer. I was out gardening at half six. Had two breakfasts, hobbit fashion. :D

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments That thunder and lightning missed us completely thank goodness. I know a lady who was struck by lightning as a child. I met her at a friend’s dinner and saw she had terrible shaky hands but I assumed wrongly she might have Parkinson’s or some other weakness. She said it nearly killed her and she was in hospital for months.

message 11063: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. Just had our morning constitutional down to the village shop for a paper. The wedding arch is still in place. They usually stay up all week but today sees the funeral of a long-time villager and deputy head at the little primary school so there was some consideration of it being inappropriate. They've left it to the surviving spouse who wanted it to stay - so it is.

Done some blogging - still playing catchup from holiday reading. Now, on with the work!

Jim | 21812 comments Most families will ask for the flowers to be left in the church, in a previous generation they'd automatically be taken out

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Well, as my eye was much better yesterday, I arranged for a colleague to give me a lift in, but hadn’t taken into account how bright our office is, a lot harder to see in the office! Boss didn’t seem concerned, so told him I will sit here, but can’t guarantee how productive I’ll be, as I can see about 80%, have to keep moving my head to focus! It appears the dilating drops are working like last time, I just couldn’t tell as I was sat in the dark at home, now I’m here they are a lot more dilated, can barely see without my sunglasses on, so have had lots of comments at work, I was hoping to get away with the discreet ones, but they aren’t quite dark enough. Not got painful light sensitivity, but keep getting that tingling in my face. Heard that the early May Bank Holiday is being changed to the Friday next year, doesn’t appear to be going down well!

Wow, never heard of someone being so seriously injured from lightning Lynne! I think it’s quite nice the spouse wanted it to stay Kath.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It rained solidly all day, until I bought a giant bucket to put under the leaking gutter that was dropping water onto our patio and which was running from there into our cellar. With any luck, it won't rain again until the guys come to fix the gutter.

Still wrestling with the Dad eulogy. It's not going very well.

Cheers

Jim | 21812 comments M.T. wrote: " Still wrestling with the Dad eulogy. It's not going very well...."

You're painting a picture.
The best eulogies seem to both tell the story, but try and keep it light with stories to make people smile.
Also if possible, it's good if people can have a story they remember. So if you tell the tale about how he and Uncle George did something funny/fun or whatever together, then it'll speak to Uncle George and Uncle George's family
So you're illuminating your father almost through the tales of others
It's almost easier for somebody from outside because we don't know many of the stories and have to ask various people. I was asked by one lady to do her mother's eulogy (mother was the wife of my cousin) and the daughter made a point of coming up with stories for everybody, so everybody felt included.

message 11068: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My neighbours son gave the best eulogy I’ve ever heard. It was really fitting for his much loved father. He told us of his achievements which were quite a surprise for most of us as he was a very modest person. He finished with a lovely anecdote about his well known reluctance to put the heating on. I’m sure you’ll give him a wonderful eulogy Mary. You’re so good with words, the love and affection will come through.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My poltergeist excelled itself yesterday. We were sitting watching the TV and I heard a funny noise a series of of whooshing pssssts. the dog woke up and stared but wouldn’t come with me to investigate. I went to look and smelt a strong smell of disinfectant, Jeyes fluid. We keep a hand held pressure sprayer for the bins etc and it had suddenly decided to release and spray everywhere. Windows, shelf, dog towels, shoes newspapers. All the junk we keep in the boot room covered in it. Husband never leaves it pressured up as it drips so why it went off like that is a mystery.

It's lovely for the flowers to stay. There are usually flowers at funerals, and beauty reminds us of what we believe.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Good morning Goodreads!

I agree about flowers, Alicia, but some people (the dress in black brigade) think it's frivolous and not repectful. I think flowers and colourful clothing are a celebration of life and are respectful to the person who's left us. They were worth all this - and they still are.

It's drizzling here quite heavily. Not hammering down but I can get quite wet going from here to the greenhouse. Ask me how I know. ;)

Have a good Tuesday everyone - and a dry one if you can manage it. (I'm staying in!)

Whatever makes the family feel as if they've done the right thing is okay. I hope for colour, too, but my children will have to decide - or husband and children, depending on how that works out. I shouldn't be in a position to care!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I'll be wearing a collarless t-shirt with buttons up like the front, like an old pair of long Johns in dark green. I will be wearing it because it's Dad's pyjama top and he would appreciated the anarchic gesture.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Hello

I've been off work the last two days since Kitty has tonsilitis, we had to take her to hospital last night because she refused to take medicine or drink anything and she didn't pee all day. Soon as we arrive she takes ibuprofen for the nurse and an ice lolly. Then 20 minutes later chugs a load of juice because the ibuprofen had kicked in. Wee scut.

Getting the antibiotics into her is a PIA though.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Did feel rubbish when I got home last night, and was so tired I could have gone to bed at 6! Made myself stay up a bit longer, but feel much better this morning, although not convinced my sight is any better today. Very wet and windy, but still can’t get away with the lighter sunglasses. At least the dilating drops stop tonight, so hopefully it wont take long for that effect to wear off. Got a sore elbow today, but at least my knee is better than expected, I’d foolishly put my bag on the stairs, went to step over it last night and landed awkwardly, but it’s not more painful than normal today.

OK Kath, how do you know you about getting wet going to the greenhouse? Hope the bucket works MT, good luck with your dads eulogy, I’d share some of the stories you have with us, I feel like your dad was a wonderful person from reading some of your stories. Love the idea for your outfit, am sure he will appreciate it. Wow, that is very weird Lynne.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I don't know how I always manage to slip off this thread. I've come back to find over 200 new posts. I won't try and take part in all that's going on but I've had a quick glance at the last few posts.

Shame on me. Must do better.

Actually, it's been a bit horrendous my end. Nothing to worry about, though. We found a leak under the carpet and then it turned out to be under the concrete floor which had to be partially dug up. This was some weeks ago but all the furniture had to be taken out for the digging and the new carpet was only going to take 7 days - ahem. Several weeks later we are still waiting but we are promised - tomorrow! So all the furniture stored in the dining room and the kitchen can go back where it belongs and life might return to normal.

There's more to the story than this but that's enough, I'm sure you'll agree (yawn, yawn) and I can't bear to give you a blow by blow account - so you've been saved! There is light at the end of the tunnel.

That's sounds like a grand outfit MT, take care.

Kath, it was torrential here today - absolutely bucketing down. Got soaked running from the house to the car.

Jim | 21812 comments Yes I'm a morning person as well. That quiet time is great to work in

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Morning all. Busy, busy, busy. Exams still running like clockwork, which is great, but it means short bursts of manic flapping, followed by long periods of vigilance - which isn't as easy as it sounds when the hall's roasting hot. Not many to go now, but the internals start next week, which means a tonne of stressed 11 year olds. Still, it's all good fun.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’m still suffering, this cold is really bad, I’m really under the weather and that’s dreadful here as well. Even the dog is cold. That sounds bad Anna, we had a pipe blockage and husband said it could go back under the house, even the thought of those repairs made me worry. Glad you’ve done most of it now.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Loving the concept behind your outfit, Mary. I'm sure your dad would approve.

How much rain can fall in one place? I'm impressed with the drainage here now, as nowhere has actually been flooded, not even the slurry pit.

message 11087: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Turns out Kitty might actually have scarlet fever... That was never mentioned before but the GP said she thought it was more likely that than plain old tonsilitis. Ugh. Can't get the damn antibiotics in her either, I was in tears this morning because I have visions of having to get her admitted for IV anitbiotics but the GP says she seems to be getting better with the minimal medicine we can get in to her. They do love to scare us Alicia!

I hope all goes well at the funeral Mary, I forget how long it takes for everything to get sorted across the water, over here it is a maximum of 3 days. It helps to get it over and done with quicker but you have a lot less time to get it sorted and get your head around it.

Sorry you are feeling under the weather Lynne; I hope you feel better soon Desley; How is everyone coping with the flooding? We actually had lovely weather the last two days so it's weird to be hearing how bad it is in parts of England.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Thanks Kath and Lynne.

A lot of banging and crashing is going on at the moment, ah well...

Yes I like getting up early - it really is a time to treasure, I like watching the birds in the garden while I'm having breakfast .

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Well, got to work this morning, then started with a headache and feeling sick, had something to eat and drink which didn't help, so had to ask to go home after 2 hours. Then made myself lie in a dark room with an eye mask on for 2 hours (till next lot of eye drops). Feeling slightly better, eye is a bit tender, so have taken an anti-inflamm, probably stopped them a bit early.

Sorry to hear that Anna, why is it that work always takes longer than promised?? Glad you have no drainage issues Will. Sorry you are still poorly Lynne. Certainly doesn't feel like June!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Just heard that our grandson isn’t well either, he’s had a croupy session last night. He’s been ill when your daughter had croup last time,Jud. I don’t know if the weather affects them both. Harry’s is definitely linked to reflux. He doesn’t eat much at school as he’s frightened of choking again so makes up for it in the evening which isn’t good for his reflux. It’s very hard on working mums when kiddies are ill.

I've noticed that along the west coast (I initially wrote 'wet coast') it is amazing how often they get the drainage write. Probably because if you don't it comes back to bit you very rapidly :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments Ended up going to sleep early, which meant I was awake early! Am not going into work today, still a bit headachy, so think it wise to wait till I have seen the eye doctor at lunchtime. Might have to do the ironing to stop being bored.

Can't wait to see a pic of the birthday cake MT. Hope grandson is better soon Lynne.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Wet again here, it’s not very warm either. I think my grandson might become a doctor, he’s already learned the script. I croaked and coughed to him on the phone yesterday and he told me I’d got a virus. 😁

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Well it's raining here too now. Big time. Yesterday was exciting too, high winds from the north and a large tidal swell meant that the harbour had the boom put across in expectation of damage. I took out all the more expensive and time consuming pieces of artwork from my beach hut just in case - just as well as the waves, spray and foam were coming over the wall! The sun is due out tomorrow at 5pm, just in time for the weekend. Just as well, this has been a poor week for sales.
Jud, when my daughter had scarlet fever the doctor brought a lot of the younger staff in to see her as it's so rare now they hadn't seen a case before.

message 11097: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Lynne, I remember Kitty telling me that she had "rained her ankle".; quote courtesy of Marshall from Paw Patrol.

Scarlet fever is on the rise again, apparently. My nephew has taken it now too, the down side to being closer to family! My granny was telling me her brother was taken into isolation when he had it and they had men fumigate the house! Nuts.

message 11098: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. Hope your poorly babe is soon up and fighting fit, Jud. I had scarlet fever as an adult.

Wet and nasty here - the weather, not just me!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12603 comments App at the hospital went well and quick! She said inflammation was much better, I've to taper down each week and go back in 6 weeks. She doesn't think this headache/dizziness/nausea is related, and I'm fine to go to work tomorrow. Had to give up on the ironing, made me feel dizzy. Neighbour took me food shopping straight from the hospital, bought too much cat food, but got some reduced renal for Lucy at a bargain price.

Day out in London today - up the Shard! It was a gift... :o) Rained on the way up and on the way back, but visibility wasn't too bad from the top across London. Interesting.

But if you get the chance to go, choose better weather!

Is June going to be a complete wash-out? I remember Junes like this from many years ago.
