Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Bit breezy, but warm.

And instead of working, I get to spend a whole day resetting passwords for this new laptop. What fun.

Hopefully one of them comes in!

What exactly was on that last update?
My sister was locked out of her computer and had to reinstall everything.
Work colleague found everything on her computer was in French.
Mine updated on Friday and was the third thing to go wrong that morning.
First - Phones wouldn't dial out (although we were receiving calls)
Second - Couldn't log into emails
Third - despite clicking to wait an hour (so I could get on with things needed to finish before lunch and for for a deadline) my computer started to update and after two hours was still not finished. And I have no idea what has been updated.

I've given up on Goodreads series and am starting to use FictFact to record and check on series order of books. The complaints about Goodreads changes now run to almost 10 pages and the only posts that aren't saying how bad the change is and that the desktop version needs to be kept and not changed to look more like the mobile version, are the couple of posts from Goodreads staff announcing the change and saying thank you for the feedback.

I'm just worried that the mobile version will become the standard and will make finding and posting in the groups harder as well.

We had a nice weekend - no thunderstorms here, so were sat out in the garden eating icecreams. Tomorrow I have to take mum to see the cancer dept at the hospital and see if we get another month's supply of tablets.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I read something on the CBC news today about malware attacks on routers. Dunno if there could be any correlation.
Dave's laptop has been on death's door for months. Can't believe it's still creaking along.

And here I am, typing away on the iPad he whinged about me buying ten years ago. He's spent at least four times as much on laptops in the past ten years. Tsk.

I checked out the series thingy earlier. Didn't even know it existed.
Can't say I'm bothered either way.

Not great news about Dave's father. He went to the doctor a couple days ago about some bowel problems he's been having and he's been given an appointment to see a consultant on Friday.
Given the speed of the follow-up, we're rather concerned.

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed!

Keep us updated, cuz this is frikking uncomfortable.

message 5158: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Well done Lindsay.

Hope they can sort Dave's dad out.

We had a gentleman on the phone this morning (Himself answered) who told us he was calling from BT (Hull has its own telephone company and internet - a monopoly we moan about muchly). He said our internet was about to be cut off but - he could help! That's nice. Husband told him he couldn't. "And why would that be, sir?" he asked.
"Because this is a scam," replied my other half.
"If you think I'm scamming you," the caller yelled in a thickening accent, "you can eff off!" - only he didn't say eff. Then he cut the call.

Result! It was such an inept scam. What BT engineer would start by saying "and how are you today, sir?" You can do the accent for yourself.

message 5159: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21810 comments Hope things go well for Dave's Dad, Dave's had enough grief recently.. Also hope it goes well for Lindsay as well.

As for scams
Just this minute put the phone down after talking to a guy who in a thick subcontinent accent with call centre noise in the background tried to tell me he was from Scottish power and wanted to read the new contract to us over the phone before they posted it to us.
"Was it all right to do this?"
"No, because it's a scam. Good day"

message 5160: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh bless.

And we Canadians are accused of being infinitely polite.

The minute I suspect a scam phone call I shout 'fuck off' and hang up.

Well, sort of. First time, I just hang up. If they ring back I shout.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Apparently the malware attacks on routes can be fixed if you restart your router? At least if it's the botnet thing the news was talking about.

Morning, all.

message 5164: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I read that restarting will help, as long as your router isn't very infected.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Morning everyone.

Lovely morning outside - a bit wet indoors. Came downstairs after showering to find water on the worktop and a puddle on the kitchen floor. The ceiling is spongey so it looks like a call to the plumber is in order but after I've tidied up because the garden has been claiming my attention just recently. It may be a case of strip washes tomorrow I fear.

Fingers crossed also for Dave's dad and Lindsay's job search.

Thanks, Desley.

The plumber/heating engineer is here now and it appears that the bath hasn't been properly sealed from day 1 so shower water has been going down the inside. To add insult to injury the meeces have apparently been using the area behind the bath panel as their winter retreat. Sheesh.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good excuse to re-do your bathroom, I reckon.

Off to friend's for dinner. I'm bringing roast beef, gravy and yorkies. And three bottles of wine. And beer. And chocolate. And homemade aubergine pickle.

I'll clear out my cupboards yet, I will.

'Heels'

'Ties'

Children wearing uniforms at school.

Social conventions that should be defunct in the 21st century.

There are so many issues that hold so much more importance.

Confused why heels should be defunct? actually I was glad of uniforms, not sure how much longer I could have got away with handmade dresses

message 5178: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Well - didn't think I'd be saying this, but ... went to see Solo tonight (Han Solo Star Wars prequel) and decided in advance I wouldn't like it. Only going to see it because my husband wanted to. The critics panned it. Yet, I loved it! Totally got into seeing the beginning of Han and Chewies bromance. There you go - life doesn't half surprise you sometimes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Morning all, cool and overcast again. Think I've got another quiet day. Still no appointment, will have to ring tomorrow if nothing in today's post.

Wow, that is a surprise Kelly

message 5180: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Fairly cool and grey here, too.

My publisher has blindsided me by releasing my new book without warning (as opposed to the 2+ months it took last time), so I'm scrabbling around to get social media into line!

Hope you get the bathroom fixed soon, Elizabeth.
And that you don't have to wait too long, Desley.

message 5181: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I like wearing heels though. Although I overdid it yesterday, I felt like I was dressed for a wedding rather than work! But that was the combo of heels, dress and hair up. I'll have to make it a more casual ensemble next time.

I hated wearing a tie at school but I liked having a uniform. Girls were lucky that we got to wear a summer blouse from easter to halloween (not including summer hols, obviously). Poor boys had to wear ties all year round. A more relaxed type of uniform might be better, like they do in Scotland, black trousers/skirt and a white top.

Kelly, if a film is dissed by critics it makes me want to see it more! Usually I really enjoy it too, I'm not sure what the point of critics are because they certainly don't seem to share the general public opinions.

Morning.

Jim | 21810 comments The only uniform I've ever worn was at school and it had the advantage that those of us who didn't have all the cool gear just turned up dressed to the same standard as everybody else

message 5183: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! The recent reintroduction of uniform at a sink estate senior school I pass on the way to town has had marvellous effects on morale and study. The school's had the best results yet for the last two years and is making better progress than some with higher achievers. It's a basic uniform, nothing flash, but it always looks neat and tidy. The school buys a smart suit for each child in the top year which they can wear for interviews. It's given them a sense of pride and belonging.

Flower arranging this afternoon.

Worked for me, too. Lot of very rich kids where I went to school, and the uniform meant that the financial differences were much less obvious

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Morning all. I was surprised to see in my new job that hardly anyone wears suits and/or ties.

message 5186: by Lynne (Tigger's Mum) (last edited May 31, 2018 05:29AM) (new)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Good afternoon. Little grandson has uniform, polo shirt & sweatshirt with or without school logo. Black trousers. Girls the same or a skirt. You should see the ‘fashions’ on the French teenagers - no uniform but they dress the same anyway.
Hope you get your plumbing sorted Elizabeth.
I remember slipping my shoes off under the table at lunch before I had my bunion operations. I really couldn’t get them back on. Husband had to go and get the car from where we’d parked and come and collect me. Not a good look, all dressed up waiting on the pavement shoeless and having to run across the road barefoot on hot tarmac.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Jim wrote: "The only uniform I've ever worn was at school and it had the advantage that those of us who didn't have all the cool gear just turned up dressed to the same standard as everybody else"

Yes, I liked a uniform for that reason.

Driving to work this morning, I saw someone running for a bus that was a couple of cars behind me, so I deliberately drove at 20mph so that they could catch it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments That was kind of you, Desley.

T'was a busy day at school today. Working tomorrow, too.

I'll enjoy the weekend.

message 5189: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We wore uniforms at the all girls school I attended in Mexico City - I never even thought about the wealth of some of the girls. It would have been different with boys, I'm sure.

Slept 11 hours after getting home from our two-week trip - and will do it again asap.

But we saw two retirement communities, both lovely, around our vacation with the kids - and husband is choosing the one I like better! I was afraid he'd choose the more limiting one because it is less expensive, but we may have found our home. Fascinating people in both.

I will appreciate the work to come somewhat more when not exhausted. Lots to catch up with here, too.

message 5190: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Alicia - best of luck finding that home. It must be very unsettling not having somewhere to lay that hat.

My son wears a uniform when he's at school. Blazer and black trousers for lessons; grey suit for chapel and special occasions. And when he's allowed to wear mufti, he and all the other pupils wear a near identical uniform of jeans, T shirts, hoodies, earphones and mobile phone.

I suppose there's a difference between a uniform we are forced to wear and one that we choose because we want to be part of a group.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Will wrote: "Alicia - best of luck finding that home. It must be very unsettling not having somewhere to lay that hat...."

Thanks, Will. Unsettled is the perfect description. And we came home to find the painter had done most of his work - and since he painted our door frames, every one of our hand-finished doors sticks! And similar for everything. Won't say more.

Husband is freaked out, and has spent the morning (with no breakfast) reconstructing a table so he can make his coffee and sit down in peace to eat.

On the good side, if we MOVE, we will have a place to go to, and can leave this house looking unpeopled - and hope it sells more quickly that way (as we have been told).

How are you feeling? Are you entirely back to work? More importantly, are you feeling like yourself again?

message 5192: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Evening all.

A day of ominous sky has turned into a hazy warm evening. Shame the rain gods are concentrating on this area for at least the next two days.

We can let the water out of the bath tonight and hopefully the next time someone stands in it the seal won't come away from the tiles. The bathroom suite and decor is only a couple of years old - fingers crossed it isn't a case of style over substance!

The scion of the house wore school uniform through secondary school - the only disadvantage was the second mortgage needed to cover the cost of the blazer.

message 5193: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Alicia - I'm partially back at work and partially feeling like myself again. I have another procedure on Friday 8th and then a few weeks recovering from the procedure. Work won't let me come back full time until I'm past all that.

As you say, it feels unsettling. I can't get back to the normal routine until I've been under the knife again. Actually, it's a lot less drastic than going under the knife. Clever keyhole surgery.

Hope your move turns out okay. Fingers crossed!

I'll be thinking of you as you get ready for yet another procedure. Hope it comes quickly and is just as quickly over and recovered from. The stress is very high from anything having to do with the heart, and they don't really help with that. It's not just any part of you, it's the one that supplies oxygen you breathe to the brain you need. Silly doctors don't realize stress and the side effects of it like sleeplessness are not good for healing. PM if you need moral support meanwhile.

I'm delighted to hear you've been offered a job - hope it's exactly what you want.

Thank you, Lindsay. The housing stuff is (was?) optional - so I can't complain too much about it being hard. Now there's no turning back, and I don't really want to, because both paths have their stresses!

I think the new place will be far more conducive to both wellness and writing, but the path is yet to be trod.
