I like this book much more than the first book of the series. Elena is not fighting against being a werewolf and she is with Clay. This grounds her character and the whole story just works better. This book brings into play other supernatural groups and while it had holes in the storyline, it was still good. The action kept the book moving forward at a pretty quick pace and all the new characters were pretty interesting. I am now looking forward to reading the next one.
WOW: Flame loc. 679 the flame lit his face

Zephyr is a harpy who has been sent to the underworld for the murder of a god which is unheard of from a half-god assassin. When her childhood friend Tallon arrives just as she’s attempting to escape intent on saving her. Zephyr’s whole life is going to change as they find out she may be the Nyx who will change the balance of power from the half-god’s and gods.
I’ve had Promise of Shadows on my kindle for months but just haven’t gotten the mythology bug till this week. I was instantly captivated by Zephyr’s story it’s a fast paced fantasy novel that kept me on the edge of my seat till the end. I was able to connect with Zephyr she’s one of those characters who has issues but she learns well. I really enjoyed the story it was one that I wasn’t able to put down till the last page. This is my first book by this author but after reading Promise of Shadows I need to check out her other books. I loved her writing style.

Bonus: Lightning ~ 33% ~ The dark lightning radiates outward in an arc of tarnished silver, destroying the grass men and charring the lawn into a smoking black mess.
Gemstone: Pearl ~ 12% ~ Her scarlet hair reaches her waist, and her dress is made of tiny pearls.

Head: Mustache ~ 61% ~ Behind me, with a knife to Cass's throat, is a man with pale skin and a long, dropping mustache.

While I love spending time with Cat and Bones I have to admit that I've lost a little bit of love for this series only because Vlad is so much hotter (literally) than Bones. There I said it. I'm superficial. I love Vlad. Luckily he was in this book a lot. As was Mencheres with special appearances by Spade. How could I not love love love this book? Well, I'm not sure, to be honest. Cat continues to be intriguing and her ability to absorb powers from those she drinks from is interesting. I just wasn't absorbed into this story. The power play between the ghouls and vampires, although...dare I say interesting, failed to capture my undivided attention because it felt too political to me (which I hate in my reading). The big bad baddy failed to provide me with heart stopping nail biting suspense and the final battle crested to a disappointing conclusion. No head explosions or anything. Bummer. Despite my complaints the rest of the book was solid. It was nice to see so many of my favorite characters again and the relationship between Cat and Bones continues to stride towards something most people can only dream about. Granted some of it was a bit sappy but thankfully Vlad was there to point out their lovey dovey ways were pukey.
Wow~Flame(s)--Page 122"That blade buried into my chest, spearing through my flesh with flames of anguish, but not piercing my heart"
Bonus~Lightning--Page 2 "Vampires might be able to heal with lightning quickness, but silver through the heart was lethal."
Eyebrow--Page 43 "He tugged on his eyebrow as he listened."
Heart--Page 2 "Vampires might be able to heal with lightning quickness, but silver through the heart was lethal."
Diamond--Page 7-8 "From Ed's expression, I guessed that between my crimson hair, the large red diamond on my finger, Bone's English accent, and the tingle aura of power he emanated, Ed had figured out who we were."

Review:2nd installment in the Relics of Merlin series and unfortunately not quite as good as the first book. We are introduced to Jasmina who is the daughter of Lord and Lady Kraken and to Lord Sterling a shape shifter who changes into a horse. The story line is a little confusing and the characters are not quite as likeable, but still - it was an enjoyable read.
WOW: Wind p. 65 the wind streamed through

Gemstone: Onyx p. 19 his onyx eyes glittering
Holiday: Soldier p. 186 another group of soldiers

I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago and it’s been tempting me on my shelf ever since because I love the cover. It’s been a while since I last read the synopsis so the whole book was a pleasant surprise of what would happen next. I was drawn into the girl’s world captivated right from the start it’s an enchanting story that I couldn’t put down. I’ve always been a fan of fairy tales but The School for Good and Evil puts an exciting new twist on the concept creating a fun new story. I think the author did a great job creating a new world for us to fall in love with. The story is beautifully written from start to finish. I loved the characters they were easy to connect with and I enjoyed getting both points of view even if Agatha was my favorite. I loved the story it’s a fun read that kept me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait to read the next installment. This may very well be my favorite book of the year.

Review: While I've heard this book and author has been surrounded by controversy with accusations of plagiarism I was quite clueless about it when I picked up the book. My enjoyment is purely on the merits of the book itself. Although I found this book to be decent I found myself unable to connect to the characters. I really got tired of hearing them state "I'm not a child." Um, yes, you are. Clary annoyed me but Jace was so much worse with his constant "go ahead and stare...I'm really that awesome" attitude. I think the world building was decent enough and I was able to ignore most of the young adult teenage angst so I'll continue with the series to see where Clare goes with it.
Wow~~Wind--page 5 A boy with a lip piercing and a teddy bear backpack was handing out free tablets of herbal ecstasy, his parachute pants flapping in the breeze from the wind machine.
Gemstones~~Sapphire--page 472 The sky arched overhead, the perfect blue of a china bowl, darkening to sapphire over the Hudson River, where the sun was going down.
Holidays~~Candy--page 153 "First the candy and flowers, then the apology letters, then the ravenous demon hordes."
The Head~~Eyelash--page338 Alec blinked, rain running off his eyelashes.
Bonus~~Prince--page 18 The dark prince sat astride his black steed, his sable cape flowing behind him.
Super bonus~~Rock--page471 Luke was, as her mother always said, a rock in times of trouble--solid, dependable, and totally immovable.

I love being back in Gin Blanco's world! This was really good - fast paced, interesting bad guy and very typical - which I love. My only challenge was what was going on between Bria and Gin, that felt a little forced and contrived and I would wish for more interaction from Owen. He played a pretty soft supporting role. But I love where the story is going!

I wanted to love A World Without Princes but I didn’t but I did enjoy it. I loved the first one so much that the second one had big shoes to fill. The story is interesting it fits for the perfect reason for the girls to return to their fairytale. The book is loaded with suspense, magic, romance, friendship and evil witches that kept me wanting to know what would happen next. The author has done a fantastic job creating another beautifully written story. The writing style smooth it flows from start to finish and it’s easy to get lost in the books. I loved the characters they already had my heart from the first book and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next for them. While this one has a ending it’s clear that there is more to come and I can’t wait for the next installment because I know it’s going to be amazing. This is one of my favorite series it’s a must read.

Review: This book took me an extraordinarily long time to read. The reason? The heroine was very difficult to like. She was a mean girl while in high school. Once out of high school she still bullied her way through life. Although this book started a decade after high school it was hard to see her as anything other than mean when every encounter or self musings was a reminder of her past. I find it hard to believe that someone can change so drastically from a horrible person to a kind one. At one point she had already claimed she had a change of heart in her early 20s but ended up the same horrible girl she was as a child. It wasn't until the last 1/4 of the book where I really jumped on the Dixie bandwagon and found I actually grew to like her.
In addition to the hard to like heroine the book has so many pop culture references that it will not stand the test of time and the hero's "talent" for voices got to be annoying. Sure Jean-Luc Picard's voice may be identifiable as is Sean Connery's but talking like Darryl in The Walking Dead? Um ok.
What helped the book from being only average were the interesting secondary characters and the lovely message from the H/h's deceased best friend (via a DVD made prior to his death.) I found the last 1/4 of the book tied the book up very nicely and whetted my appetite for the next book in the series, which I had decided against reading during the first half but found by the end I changed my mind.
Fireworks page 173 "I just blew my stack as sure as Johnson Ridley blows up at least one box of fireworks by mistake every Fourth of July."
Pearl page 109 "Nanette stopped dead in front of him, the rolls of her neck lavish with her customary pearls."
Tongue page 14 "Em clucked her tongue."
Water page "Don't be so quick to call me dead in the water."
Bonus word Sun is there but since I wasn't able to read it in time it won't count)"Em huffed, brushing the brim of her black sun hat, and sat down beside her."

Review: It's been a long time since I've read an IAD book (have been reading them all out of order) so I'm happy to get back to the series. Overall I thought this book was good/very good. I honestly just thought something was missing from the story. I liked Kaderin and Sebastian but their relationship was almost too star crossed lovers to enjoy. To tell the truth I was thinking this was a 3 star read up until the last 50 pages or so. Then, whammy! I kind of melted a bit. I think the person who made this book a page turner for me though was not the H or h but a secondary character, Bowen. When I hit the end of this book I wanted to find out what happened to Bowen. The book left his thread dangling. His book is next. Bet I don't wait over a year to read it!
Wow~Ear page 18 "Her ear was sharply pointed."
4 Elements~Fire page 40 "Oh! And his skin just caught fire!"
Gemstones~Ruby page 265 "But she'd been giving him soft kisses with those ruby lips as she'd smoothed he palms over his chest and torso."
Holidays~Soldier page 1 "Every soldier came back changed by the horrors of war--he himself had--but Sebastian's brothers came back altered."
Bonus~Mystery page 79 "She's a mystery, that one."

Great reviews, Team!
