Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I read The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak. I thought it was well done. It's about an Armenian and a Turkish family whose lives intertwine in unexpected ways. It was stronger than Shafak's Three Daughters of Eve and probably as good as her The Architect's Apprentice.

Petra | 3324 comments I've read the third of the Neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante: Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It hit on some difficult changes for women in the late 60s and early 70s with the introduction of the pill, choices, family & obligation, independence, etc.

PattyMacDotComma Sir Robert Carey is as dashing and daring as ever in A Surfeit of Guns, the third in P.F. Chisholm's fun series about the English and Scots battling and thieving in the border country in Elizabethan England. Love it!

Petra | 3324 comments I finished reading Tulipomania: The Story of the World's Most Coveted Flower & the Extraordinary Passions It Aroused by Mike Dash.
Who knew that the tulip could be this interesting?!! The book covers everything from the discovery of the tulip by the Turks, some history of the Ottoman Empire, the tulip craze, it's outcome, and more. All in all, a very well put together story.

I have that on my phone waiting for me! I grabbed it because I really liked his earlier novel The Piano Tuner. You should check it out.

Chrissie I got two thirds of the way through Young Men and Fire, and then I gave up. I explain in my review why:

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1415 comments I read The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
I thought the novel started off strongly but then lost focus. A bit disappointing, especially the happily-ever-after fairy tale ending.

Julia (juliace) | 720 comments I just finished reading In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer for the 2nd time. It's heartbreaking what this young girl went through and at the same time inspiring what she did to help others.

PattyMacDotComma Sydney's famous Mardi Gras begins on Valentine's Day, so I thought I'd reintroduce this wonderful memoir by Chris Edwards, a man who started life as a determinedly reluctant little girl.
Balls: It Takes Some to Get Some is both fascinating and funny!
