Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1416 comments I read The Arab of the Future: A Childhood in the Middle East, 1978-1984: A Graphic Memoir by Riad Sattouf.
I have mixed feelings about it. I thought it was well done, but I was uncomfortable with the portrayal of Arabs and Muslims.

PattyMacDotComma I've meant to read The Ballad of the Sad Café and Other Stories by Carson McCullers for many years and finally did.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1416 comments I read Women & Power: A Manifesto by Mary Beard.
I thought it was good as far as it goes, but I wish she had developed it a little more by suggesting how we can transform the power structure to make it more conducive to feminist principles.

Chrissie I have completed The Devil's Highway: A True Story by Luis Alberto Urrea. I definitely do recommend it. The author reads the audiobook himself, and he does it very well.

Chrissie I have completed Miss Subways. Yep, the author is the actor that played Fox Mulder in The X-Files!

Amalia, I did not love it quite as much as you.

Paul Lockman | 72 comments I usually enjoy the Quarterly Essay series and recently finished Moment of Truth: History and Australia's Future by Mark McKenna. The essay covers what to me is Australia's big issue, the needs and demands of the First Nations, the original inhabitants of the country. Interesting and thought-provoking but I felt it left a few things unanswered. Here’s my review

Finished Cecità by José Saramago.
A real masterpiece. Terribly describing how cruel mankind can be ... It recalled me a bit Lord of the Flies

Phrynne, I wasn't that keen on it, either.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1416 comments I read There There, an incredibly powerful novel about urban Native Americans. It is Tommy Orange's debut novel and it is spectacular. It's one of the best books I've read all year. The voice is strong, full of rage, and gut-wrenching. Highly recommended.

My five-star review.
