Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1416 comments I've finished up two books:

The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui.
It's a memoir about a Vietnamese family's struggles in Vietnam and their immigration to the U.S. It's a graphic novel. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't for me.

A raw, poignant masterpiece....5 stars.

Amalia, Medea is one of my favorite characters. I haven't read Christa Wolf's Medea, but I have her Cassandra: A Novel and Four Essays on my to read list.

Have you read Bright Air Black by David Vann? He writes in the first person point of view as Medea. We get inside her brilliant mind and listen in as she hatches her plan for revenge. She comes across as such an amazing figure. I thought it was a stunning novel. I read it last year.

Here's my review if you're interesting in learning more about it.

Chrissie I have listened to two short stories by Jamaica Kincaid:

*Girl
*Wingless

Both are read by Edwidge Danticat

I have a link to them on the net in my review.

message 1835: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I've finished a few books since my last update:

Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum's adventures are almost always fun during a commute. Not good literature and cookie-cutter but a fun story.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Our Father: Reflections on the Lord's Prayer by Pope Francis - I've never read any of the Pope's writings. I enjoyed his remarks and thoughts.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A Well-Tempered Heart by Jan-Philipp Sendker - an interesting story of a woman finding her true path in Life. A sequel, of sorts, to The Art Of Hearing Heartbeats.
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Train Dreams by Denis Johnson - an odd little book. Well written, great descriptions, some wonderful segments, yet emotionless and aloof.

PattyMacDotComma Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives by neuroscientist David Eagleman is what I would take to a desert island because I’ll never get tired of enjoying his imagined afterlives, each only a few pages long.

Some are funny, some scary, some philosophical, all entertaining. A FAVOURITE!
