Hi everyone.

It’s a peculiar thing having to write about myself and puts me in mind (aka replays the nightmare) of the many courses I have attended over the years where the host has suggested that age-old icebreaker of telling the group a little something about yourself. I hated that bit, especially if you were the first person in that touchy-feely semi-circle of delegates to be picked on and knew that all eyes in the room would be on you as you tell them your name and try to impart an interesting fact about yourself … Hello, my name’s Paul and I once worked with Julie Andrew’s niece!
True story incidentally but hardly earth shattering!

Now, many people have told me that a ‘Bio’ is massively important as it gives the reader (or potential customer) an insight as to what one is like as a person and therefore determines if they would actually consider buying one of your novels or not. Okay yes, I kind of get it but at the same time wonder how that all works? I mean, my personality isn’t remotely similar to the IRA terrorist I created in my first book nor the homeless chap in my second and as for the sexually explicit player in my third, well … Oh wait, hang on a minute!

I do, of course, jest :-)

Seriously though, I can’t imagine that somebody would get to know me simply by reading these few lines but, if a bio is supposed to help that process, then I recognise that I must at least divulge the basics about myself if only to give you, the potential reader of my works, a little taster of who I am. So, without further ado, here goes.

Okay. Well, I was born in 1964 and was the middle of three sons but (before you ask) didn’t suffer from middle-child syndrome, as my parents were skilled at making us all feel special and equal. Hmmm … Actually, now I come to think about it, my older and younger siblings did get a little more attention than I did AND got better Christmas presents!
In fact, I seem to recall that I came home from school once and my whole family had moved. Good God. It’s no surprise that I’m messed up!

Anyway, onwards and upwards as they say, whoever they are?

I grew up in Manchester, UK and indeed, have lived in and around the city all my life as it is a place that I love and am proud to be a part of. Multi-cultural, modern, the home of two Premiership football teams and the birthplace of many a famous band: Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Take That and Simply Red, to name but a few.

So what led me to become an Author? Well, for most of my life, I have dabbled with writing various pieces, from poems to short fictional stories but never considered doing anything with them as they had always been just for fun.
However, in January 2009 (following a bizarre, wine fuelled conversation with a very good friend of mine … another story) I decided to have a go at writing a novel. Thus, my first novel Letterbox was conceived which is a fictional take on the infamous IRA bombing of Manchester in 1996. It took me a year to complete, as I had to write it in my spare time but found it to be one of the most satisfying and interesting paths that I have ever followed. Thus, the writing bug became firmly embedded within me.

My second book, George; A Gentleman of the road (a true story about one of Manchester’s homeless) was released in May 2013 with a debut book signing event taking place at Waterstone’s Book store in Manchester. The turn out of people to that event took both me and the store manager by surprise, I can tell you and my fifteen minutes of fame, so to speak, is an experience that I will never forget. Having so many people turn up to a bookstore just to see me was not only completely overwhelming but incredibly exciting.

IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL ILLNESS.
