PattyMacDotComma I don't always like books that win the Booker Prize, but 1987's Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively is terrific. It was even shortlisted for the Golden Booker, best in 50 years. Straight to the favourites list (or the pool room, for Aussies 😊).

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Crimes of Conscience: Selected Short Stories by Nadine Gordimer.
I've loved everything I've read by Nadine Gordimer, and this was no exception. I think she's amazing.

Raul | 745 comments I recently finished reading Betrayal of the Self by Arno Gruen. It's a wonderful book that shows the destructiveness of the loss of our autonomy. My review:

Ah, but isn't it encouraging to know there's still so much good stuff out there for you to stumble across? I feel so delightfully surprised to find myself completely engrossed in something that's been available for decades, just waiting for me. 😊

message 8377: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop; translated from the French by Anna Moschovakis.

Winner of the 2021 International Booker Prize, it chronicles the descent into madness by a Senegalese soldier fighting with the French in the trenches in World War I. Scenes of graphic violence. Very compelling first-person narrative.

I've only read a couple of Wendell Berry's works, Greg, but having read about him, I have a fair idea of what he generally writes.

I enjoyed Jayber Crow, but what I really loved was a short story, Stand By Me. Just beautiful. I read it a while ago when someone shared their review.

PattyMacDotComma Gift for fans, old or young! Rule the music scene like Queen Beyoncé Knowles by Caroline Moss is a colourful, informative, graphic and text bio of a little girl who worked her heart out to become a world-famous entertainer. More than pictures.

PattyMacDotComma The Way it is Now, by Aussie author Garry Disher, is the latest addition to his popular mysteries. Small, unspoiled beach town, old disappearance (crime?), and old wounds make for good reading.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
A compelling coming-of-age narrative about a young girl growing up in politically turbulent Nigeria and a home riddled with domestic violence.

I set a challenge for myself to read 80 books for the year. This is #80, so I've completed the challenge. I intend to keep chugging along to see how far I can get :)
