Joy D Deep character study of an artist, set in Japan in 1948-1950, a time when the country was experiencing massive change after its defeat in WWII. Themes include conflict avoidance, differences in generations, the desire for a meaningful life, and how memories are altered over time to conform to one’s self-concept.

An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro - 4 stars - My Review

Joy D A teacher is asked to counsel a condemned man before he dies for a crime he did not commit, and in the end, they both learn “a lesson before dying.”

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines - 4 stars - My Review

PattyMacDotComma I loved Girl, Woman, Other, the fantastic recent Booker prize winner by Bernardine Evaristo. It's a most entertaining read about 12 black women (and some side stories) in England - how their families came to be there and how the current generation is living now.

The characters have their own stories but are loosely involved in each other's lives in intriguing ways. Just wonderful and a great read!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments Finished Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones. I thought it was brilliant. I loved the narrative voice of the feisty old woman. So different from Flights, which I also loved. Tokarczuk is such a talented writer with an amazing range.

PattyMacDotComma What a great way to introduce kids to some of the classics by the much-loved Charles Dickens! I think A World Full of Dickens Stories by Angela McAllister would make an excellent gift.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1413 comments Finished Last Train to Istanbul by Ayşe Kulin. It had a lot of potential but I thought there were a lot of problems with the structure and quality of writing.
