I'm delighted to hear you think she's a good character. Originally she was only meant to be in The Book of Souls and then disappear forever, but she didn't like that. I imagine we'll be seeing plenty of her in the future.(less)

He won't mind. I suspect a psychotherapist would say he has an unhealthy amount of denial. A lot of what he deals with is actually the aftermath of the horror - something which police in real life have to face daily. Some people can switch it off at the end of the day, some blunt it with drink. Tony deals with it by being something of a workaholic, and simply never facing up to things until he really has to.

There are times when it gets too much. He has a bit of a breakdown in The Book of Souls when he goes back to the burnt out remains of his tenement building, and much of his attitude towards senior officers is a means of diverting his fear into useful anger.

Most of all though, he is a pragmatist at heart. Screaming his throat raw, however much he might want to, won't make the problem go away. So he rolls up his sleeves and gets on with it. This is actually how most people deal with fear and other strong emotions like grief. Imagining something terrible happening is actually far worse than dealing with it when it does happen.(less)

“Neighbours complaining about someone’s dog making an awful racket. You could hardly blame the poor beast, its owner had died in her bed at least a fortnight before and there hadn’t been much left of the old girl worth eating.”

James Oswald Hi Zoe,

Heilan Coos (the correct spelling!) are damp, as is everything else. Otherwise fine. Still waiting for two to calve, but the rest are gambolling happily over the hill.

Still finding my way with Goodreads. Don't take this personally, but I think it friended you on my behalf because I linked to facebook. I'm a bit annoyed at that, not because I wouldn't have friended you, (and when did friend become a verb? I thought it was befriend?) but because I'm wary about personal data being traded back and forth without my explicit permission.

On the other hand, so far it's linked me with you and Clare McGowan, so maybe I can forgive it thus far.

Will you be at Harrogate this year? I missed it last time, so I've a lot of catching up to do.
