A new favourite, the terrific Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. A 20-year-old classic that's lost none of its punch. Great story, great characters, first-rate writing.

I finished Gilgamesh: The Life of a Poem by Michael Schmidt. It's an exploration of the various aspects of the ancient Mesopotamian poem, including its translations and interpretations. It's not for everyone, but if you're like me and love the poem, you'll enjoy this.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

After Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel won the Booker Prize in 2009 and was short-listed for the Golden Booker in 2019 (best in 50 years), I figured I should read it again and write something. So I did.

I've been in the middle of Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy for what feels like forever now. It's really an excellent book but it's so emotional and has a lot of depth to it, making it a slow read. After this something lighthearted, for sure!
Read and enjoyed the dark fantasy The Chalice and the Crown

Historical fiction about life in the Appalachians, primarily in the late 1920’s to 1940’s. A young mother living in Charleston takes her two children and leaves her abusive husband to find her deceased father’s relatives in the Carolina mountains. Mary Seneca Steele moves into an old abandoned house and develops a romantic relationship with a cousin. It is a story of love, land, family, and finding a sense of home. This book is based on a real situation from the author’s family history, what she calls “an adventure of the heart.” It is too bad this work is not more widely known. It is wonderful piece of writing.Refuge by Dot Jackson - 4 stars - My Review
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. A beautiful story, beautifully told about South Africa during Apartheid. Although it's been years since I last read it, I think this is the third time around for me. It is as powerful and as beautiful now as ever. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished this contemporary satire on race relations in America:The Sellout by Paul Beatty - 3 stars - My Review
Recently finished the creepy and chilling
Dear Child by Romy Hausmann. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished The Paris Hours and almost threw in the book. As much as enjoyed another book any Alex George is how much I didn’t care for his new title. I gave this two stars and wouldn’t recommend it.
My review of The Life She Deserves by Maggie Christensen
4 and a half stars

Former high school football star Jack Burdette returns to his hometown of Holt, Colorado, in the 1980's, after an eight-year absence. Jack has alienated the townspeople due to his past actions. His friend, Pat Arbuckle, the local newspaper editor, tells the sad story of Jack’s rise and fall. Where You Once Belonged by Kent Haruf - 3 stars - My Review
I read Antigone Rising: The Subversive Power of the Ancient Myths by Helen Morales. She deconstructs some classical myths by interpreting them with a feminist lens and demonstrating their relevance to today. Some of the connections she makes are fascinating. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my review for Pekoe Most Poison by Laura Childs. I am disappointed in this series. I didn't have much to say.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
