PattyMacDotComma A new favourite, the terrific Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. A 20-year-old classic that's lost none of its punch. Great story, great characters, first-rate writing.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I finished Gilgamesh: The Life of a Poem by Michael Schmidt. It's an exploration of the various aspects of the ancient Mesopotamian poem, including its translations and interpretations. It's not for everyone, but if you're like me and love the poem, you'll enjoy this.

PattyMacDotComma After Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel won the Booker Prize in 2009 and was short-listed for the Golden Booker in 2019 (best in 50 years), I figured I should read it again and write something. So I did.

Joy D Loved this mix of science, history, and unconventional women, based on the lives of real people, Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, amateur paleontologists in England in the early 1800s:

518 Publishing | 42 comments I've been in the middle of Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy for what feels like forever now. It's really an excellent book but it's so emotional and has a lot of depth to it, making it a slow read. After this something lighthearted, for sure!

Joy D Historical fiction about life in the Appalachians, primarily in the late 1920’s to 1940’s. A young mother living in Charleston takes her two children and leaves her abusive husband to find her deceased father’s relatives in the Carolina mountains. Mary Seneca Steele moves into an old abandoned house and develops a romantic relationship with a cousin. It is a story of love, land, family, and finding a sense of home. This book is based on a real situation from the author’s family history, what she calls “an adventure of the heart.” It is too bad this work is not more widely known. It is wonderful piece of writing.

Refuge by Dot Jackson - 4 stars - My Review

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. A beautiful story, beautifully told about South Africa during Apartheid. Although it's been years since I last read it, I think this is the third time around for me. It is as powerful and as beautiful now as ever.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Antigone Rising: The Subversive Power of the Ancient Myths by Helen Morales. She deconstructs some classical myths by interpreting them with a feminist lens and demonstrating their relevance to today. Some of the connections she makes are fascinating.
