Haha! SPA v POR.. Ramos concussed De Gea while waiting in the tunnel before kick off :~))

I've only seen the last game Brazil played, so not p to scratch with their performance across the 3 group games. But from what I saw of them last night....they're looking good for at least the semis, maybe further.

France? Well....if they can get themselves fired up..mibbe….but I don't rate their chances myself. The way they been playing suggests to me, that just don't care! Somebody needs to light a fire up their Froggy bums to get 'em moving...cos they ain't gonna go much further, playing like geriatrics!

Hardly sporting is it...just not cricket! Oh of course not...I forgot, it's football...the game that clubs do employ players from the bottom end of the gene pool...well..a lot of 'em, anyways! :)

Craig White | 6727 comments realistically, duke, about the only option open to him, death or glory as no-one else could put the ball in the net - just ended in very death for him, mind. i think maybe the shock and distress displayed by the germans at the end was not totally genuine, as it was obvious from about half way thru' the 2nd half they were going out!

Lol, if he fails to retire now you can just hear the chants from opposing fans behind the goal at every game for the foreseeable future can't you, "get up the other end and score!"

Nup….the only two scottie teams I know of...are those that are bitter rivals..Celtic &..... er…….the other one! :)

That's about the extent of my knowledge of Scotland's football clubs! Probably all I do need to know about 'em too!!!!

Well..one knows when the game is going really badly..that the goalie decides to bugger off to the other side, and try and do what the others couldn't...damn.... it was so funny!

He'll be a very brave man if he tries to carry on....assuming any club would have him that is!

message 760: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments he's rated as one of the best keepers in the world, if not the best, should he move from bayern he will command obscene figures - if he continues as keeper for national team, that will be up to the coach, doubt it will still be low!

message 761: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Good luck to France..c'mon froggies, ya can do it, you've got the talent there somewhere..smash those cheatin' Argies out in fine style! :)

message 762: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments don't think they were cheating, duke, just lousy! anyhoo, the tech tipster cabal says 'wait to see if argentina are in the mood, and if they are will win 2-1! french have been lazy up till now, and may find it difficult to shake their torpidity.

later - good as he is, ronaldo can't do it all himself, and was showing signs of wear in last match - portugal's pepe odds on to take a dive during pre-match handshakes! boom!
uruguay 1 portugal 0, possibly after extra time.

message 763: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments As they said on R5 the other day about Uruguay v Portugal - "The ref will need eyes in the back of his head for this one." I predict that it will be a long-remembered classic but not necessarily for football reasons.

Adios Argentina - it was a good game but they just weren't good enough for the QFs and beyond.

message 764: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments hadn't figured on the mbappe factor! at least now we've seen a team with the tools to win the world cup.

what's the odds on ronaldo getting sent off? i think he would have to knife someone to get the red card! (probably reduced to yellow after VAR review!)

message 765: by theDuke (last edited Jun 30, 2018 01:22PM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Well...both games played out just as i'd expected. Argies beaten in fine fashion & Portugal were weak against the far superior Uruguay.

Quite a dull game by all accounts..although Ronaldo did get a yellow...so had Portugal won..he would've been out of the next match anyway. Some superb goals scored in both matches.

I predict, all the top group teams will progress, in the first 4...so Spain to take Russia apart easy..and Croatia to fly through comfortably.

Interesting to see that both finalists of 2014 are now out, shaping up to be a great world cup! :)

PS Argentina are the kings of cheating in my book and they do it in style...goodbye and good riddance to them!

message 766: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments right, whaddawe gots today?

sticking my neck out and supporting the odd feeling I've had about Russia! to win after 1-1 draw, e,t. or penalties.

simply Croatia 3 Denmark 1 - Croatia been quietly going about their business in a mostly positive style.

You're either a genius or a match fixer! 😉😎

message 768: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments i'd say the former, but a genius might have taken that to the bookies! :)

the Russians have a steely resolve about them, ain't pretty but it's getting results! would you put it past the Russian football authorities to have told the national team to play pish for a couple of years to deliberately lower their ranking? who knows!

message 769: by TheFoe (new)

TheFoe | 2648 comments All the favourites are one by one getting picked out of the tournament. Wanted Russia to beat Spain but did think they, (Spain), should have been awarded a penalty. That said, judging by the shoot-out, they'd have probably missed it anyway.

message 770: by theDuke (last edited Jul 02, 2018 01:19AM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Oh come on! Russia's tactic to form an impregnable defence around the goal, says more their unbelievable run of luck, than it does about their ability at playing world level class footy. I mean look at the awful Ruskie defender....who wasn't watching the ball..too busy fighting the Spanish striker to the ground, and scored an own goal! Talentless, inept & aging players, one of their wingers was 38 ffs! He was getting cramp at the end of the main game! Granted...the Spanish really should've done more, than just milling about playing possession footy, they should've charged at the Russian side, to try and break up the defence more, but they didn't...so the lucky Russians bold tactic won out. Hell of a game plan ain't it "Let's block the goal for 120 mins & hope we win on penalties!" Hardly pretty, or beautiful..or sporting is it?!

If they win against the Croats, I will be gobsmacked....those Croats won't dilly dally about...they'll charge at 'em! So those pluck knackered Ruskies need a new game tactic to combat that..if they've the strength to do so!

The only positive, I can draw from Russia ascending the route to glory..that should England make it all the way too.....it's gonna make the final look very attractive for our boys! :)

Just depends which of the remaining top dogs get through, if Belgium, Brazil, France or Uruguay get through.

I would say, that Japan, Sweden, the Swiss, Mexico, haven't got enough to take them any further...but the way this WC is playing out....Japan could win it for all I know! And the supporters will tidy up after themselves again before they leave! :)

As for England...well..we still haven't seen what Kane and his lads are truly capable, as they were resting in the last group game...so not gunna say anything about them yet.

But, come tomorrow, it'll be time to see if Southgate's 'masterstroke' plan, by resting his top guns & wasting the final group game, pays off on Tuesday.

My prediction for today's game....Brazil ought to do it....but I'm gunna plump for Mexico 1-2, just cos upsets is the current theme, and maybe Brazil is next for the chop!

As for Sweden & Switzerland game.....can't decide..neither particularly jump out....they didn't look that impressive to me, but i'll go for Sweden 1-0.

message 771: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments I'd back Uruguay to do well but Cavani's struggling and they'll miss him terribly. Brazil/Mexico is quite interesting as on their day Mexico can really turn it on... just that they have many more off-days than on-days is the prob.
Sorry folks but I just can't get excited over England. On paper they should beat Columbia and either Sweden or the Swiss, but it's not played on paper is it. Years and years and years of below-par performances have dulled my enthusiasm for our national team. Do I want England to reach the semis? Of course I bloody do! Do I think they will? Nah not really.

message 772: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments "Do I want England to reach the semis? Of course I bloody do"

......n't! :)

today - i've been more impressed by mexico so far, than brazil, and with neymar being soft as shight, won't be as effective against a hard working unit like mexico. gauny agree with duke (?) and go 2-1 or 3-2, mexico!

i enjoy watching japan play, but i think the mavericks within the belgian team will dictate the outcome - belgium 2-0!

message 773: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments What a 2nd half. Good to see a complete lack of haranguing the ref and rolling around.

message 774: by Craig White (last edited Jul 02, 2018 10:55PM) (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments neymar does enough rolling around for everyone! i have zero respect for any talented footballer who feels the need to behave like this! why referees don't start rewarding this kind of simulation with yellow and red cards, i don't know. it's shocking that he does this, even more shocking as he knows he'll get away with it! i probably don't want brazil to win even more than england!!!!
speaking of which, i believe that they're playing today! separating the team from the vomit inducing media is difficult, but,
columbia 1 england 2

sweden 3 switzerland 1

message 775: by theDuke (last edited Jul 03, 2018 04:06AM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Gotta feel sorry for the Japs..by gad did they well...but those Belgies….wow! 0-2 down in that 2nd half..and they just (very just!) managed to win it......how incredible was that last second goal?! Just goes to show.....the Japs probably settled for extra time, and didn't factor in a Belgian running like grease lightning across the entire pitch to pop one in the dying seconds.....how does saying go...…"Assumption is the mother of all...…!" :)

Gotta hand it to Belgium, they well and truly deserved their win..even when they looked disjointed and down after that 2nd jap goal went through....they didn't give up, instead they wheeled out..... him! Felainni, who despite his stupid hairdo...did the deed with one of his classic headers!

I didn't see the Brazil Mexico game..i was oot! But not a surprising result, even with the silly acting by Neymar, the south Americans do like to play act a lot don't they...no need for it....stupid drama queens...just spoils the game....so good job I didn't see it then!

message 776: by Blastronaut (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Yep, rolling around and acting like one's been shot (when one's not actually been shot obviously) is cheating Duke, plain n simple. Anyone who does it should be red carded and/or suspended for a match-or-two, that'd cut it out. It's been happening ever since I can remember and they're no further forward with doing summat about it now than they've ever been.

message 777: by theDuke (last edited Jul 04, 2018 03:37AM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments That's why I don't like the South Americans teams...they do it too much..and they don't need to..their talent at footy is good enough..so why do it? Just makes them look unprofessional, trying to get other players kicked off....just not cricket...literally!

And yes I agree, he ought to been booked himself, definitely worthy of an Oscar anyway! :)

message 788: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments The media reaction, as usual, does seem over the top by a good distance. Yes, it's the first time we have won on pens at the World Cup, but we're only in the QFs for God sake!

And all this nonsense about "I watched through my hands, I couldn't bear to look". Utter tripe.

Still, it was good to win against the second prison team that we've played at this tournament.

message 789: by TheFoe (new)

I was wondering too.

Edit,
Wiki says:

Some Jewish and non-Jewish fans of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. adopted "Yid" (or "Yiddo") as a nickname and "Yiddo, Yiddo!" as a battle cry and often identify themselves as "Yid Army". While such usage remains controversial, for the majority of Tottenham supporters it is used with pride. Some Jewish Tottenham supporters use it with a political consciousness of the club as a bastion against racism and antisemitism. Fans of other clubs use the term as a pejorative because it is perceived that many Tottenham Hotspur fans are Jewish. This following started in the 1890s and 1900s when the club was the team of choice for "East-enders" – including large numbers of Jewish immigrants – who could easily get cheap buses and trams to Tottenham, heading north along the road later designated the A10. East-end Jews have mostly moved to the north and east London suburbs and Herts and Essex, but support for Tottenham Hotspur continues to run in families (a famous example is Alan Sugar). For visiting teams' supporters the Jewish connection continues to be bolstered by the large numbers of – easily identifiable – Haredi Orthodox Jews living in the South Tottenham and Stamford Hill areas; but in practice there is no evidence of Haredi Jews attending football matches. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to be Haredi to be Jewish, and Spurs still has a strong Jewish fanbase.

Out of interest, where does that come from? Couldn't find anything in a search.

As for usage (of both), whilst they might make some uncomfortable, I guess it's ok for fans of the clubs, as they 'get' it. Rather like African Americans using the 'N' word amongst themselves.... but don't you dare say it if you're not black.

message 793: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Gebus...weren't last night's game just one scrappy affair....I've said it before..and i'll say it again..South American team are cheaters, ungentlemanly..and a bunch of bar stewards! Good riddance to them!

And Harry Kane is now only 3 goals away from matching Mr nice guy himself Salt & Lineker! :)

message 796: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments hmmmm! up here it's both an insult and a badge of honour for supporters to use the term 'tim' in reference to celtic, and 'hun' for rangers, but outwith the 'banter' the terms often cause the most unnecessary outpourings of bile, sectarian hatred and violence, which has absolutely no place in sport! or anywhere!

you'd be mortified if you knew the half of it! i imagine that the spurs/arsenal thing is like a my little pony's picnic compared to this crap!

message 797: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments those aren't included, duke! kane has benefitted more than most from all the penalties awarded at this tournament! only scored 2 from open play, and one of those was a tap -in! (sour grapes inc.)

message 798: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments Penalties in a penalty shoot-out don't count, but obviously penalties in the match, or extra-time, do.

Not just an incredible thing to say, considering the behavior of some of the Colombian players but... talk about the frying-pan calling the kettle black-arse!!? What an utter tit!
