Only if she says Meow a few times while happily digesting Goldie.

*closing the book since Marla spoiled it ☺*
Mods where can we check about book length approval? You know, those with only e-editions? :P

For instance does Robert Petkoff count for

How do we verify the length of a children's book using the amount of words?

Haha i just snorted tea out of my nose !!!

I beat you to this question! They said the bonus book doesn't have to be seperate. So Rebecca would count for the bonus genre and the letter R. :)
lol Marla and Kelly!
Ezi - we haven't included narrators for the spell-it-out. Maybe if we do this challenge again we'll consider it
Thanks Jaclyn!

If you find an eBook publisher who gives you word count, we will use that; and for the purposes of this challenge we will divide the wordcount by 250 per page.
We are using this from techtips.salon.com "This gives a rough rule of thumb of one page in print equating to 2KB."
Also, this:
Maybe this blogsite will help you a bit: The Daring Novelist.

*Rules Update*
When I created the goal for this challenge (1000 points) it was based on a bit of a guess from number of players to make a 6-8 week challenge. We've had A LOT more people sign up for this than our last challenges which has made each team have an annual book rate of c.1000. That means each team should, on average, be able to read 19 books a week (225 points) and most will probably do more as it is a read-a-thon!
So to that end I'm going to change the goal to 2000 points which should see us have a 7/8 week challenge.

I think we're allowed to ignore it but don't have to.

Karen, I would like clarification on this as well. If I read The Retribution could I use T if I want? Or would it be the R?

From the rules in the first post:
As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.
I'm assuming that may means optional.
Thanks Kelly - yes you are correct. You can use the "The" if you like, but you can also ignore it
Michelle wrote: "With 2 authors, we can use either, right? Ex: The Mountain: My Time on Everest is Ed Viesturs with David Roberts. Can I use the D for David?"
Yes
Yes

How many times can we reread a word and get points? Just once or can we do it a 3rd time? (we got a shorter word this week)

Someone had mentioned that we're allowed to use either of the authors on a story. Does it follow then that we can use any of the titles (first character or second following a the/a/etc) or any of the authors on books of short stories?
I assume it would still only count as one letter since it is one book.
Correct - thanks Corey!
Kelly - with short stories you can use the author who is claimed as the "editor", (where there is an actual novel with two authors like Confessions of a Murder Suspect then either author can count.). This is because short stories generally wouldn't be more than 160 pages each even though the collection is greater, and so the book as a whole meets the page count, there may be 6 or more authors!. Therefore within a short story collection I think you would need to check if there is a story within the collection that meets the page count before using a character name for a spell it out.

Thanks, just curious!

You have until:
Sunday 11am Australia EST which is:
Saturday 9pm (New York ) USA East Coast
Saturday 6pm (San Francisco) USA West Coast
Sunday 2am London (UK/Europe)
Countdown until the end of week one is here
Books completed between July 12 and the deadline can count towards week one
After the deadline the new wheels for week 2 will be posted! :D

I didn't know that, so say for example I read an A but our word this week is HORROR and next week is YOUNG ADULT I can still use that A for that? Is that right, I'm still confused!

You can reread the word more than once, though, so it could apply as a title, author, or character some place in the read week.

14 185 Stewart, Mariah Last Look 443
16 186 Leykam, Garrison Classic Diners of Ct 176
18 187 Sachar, Louis Holes bk 1 J 293
19 188 Patterson, James Invisible 491
That's right Greta. We started the challenge a little early so for the first week books read from the 12th until the deadline (in just under 3 hours) are ok
Jaclyn - week 2 books count from once the deadline has passed in about 3 hours. So if someone in your team is in a timezone that has the deadline as the 19th and they mark it as read on the 19th (but after the deadline so you didn't include it in your week 1 submission), then you can use it for week 2.
I hope that makes sense :).

Cuz then it wouldn't matter how long your genre name is after the first instance and the completion bonus.

That's right.
You must finish a spelling of a word before points for a re-read can be gained.
For example:
If my word is SUSPENSE and as a team we have read
SUSPENSE = 80 points
_USPENSE = 70 points
__UPEN_E = 0 points (as the second re-read was not completed)
(Note I haven't included any bonus points in the above example)

Yes, I'll follow what we did for the last challenge and allow any religious books
