I read the book back in 2007 I believe.

The woman dreams of a forest and something nefarious happening. She keeps dreaming similar instances.

A man approaches her(not a dream) who acts as somewhat of a mentor, she is a princess of sorts I believe in his world. She is adopted but didn't find out until this point. Her mother is deceased(adopted mother), she has an adopted brother as well.

At some point she has a relationship with a cop or detective and performs some sort of magical protection for him.
