Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Is anyone else having technical problems with GR's today? I can't get book pages to completely load. It was working fine earlier, but now I can't see any of the reviews, none of the shelves, or even a link to the top shelves, which is bumming me out because I want to check on Gail Carriger's books.

I'm running a Mac and they recently did a Safari update (yesterday) to Safari 11. I'm a little concerned.

Which GC books are you interested in. I can check them for you.

Thanks, Sandra!

I'm looking at Soulless or Etiquette & Espionage, both by Gail Carriger. I have other options if those won't work. Thanks for checking for me! I really appreciate it!

I'm going to try doing a full computer shutdown and restart, then see if that helps. I'll be back shortly! : )

message 204: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments OK, no demons on Soulless shelves. I mean I know that there aren't any in the story but people are crazy.

Off to check E&E.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Crossing my fingers! There was mention of one in Imprudence, so maybe I'll get lucky. Otherwise, I'll be reading Charley Davidson #4. LOL!

Edit: My shutdown & restart hasn't resolved the problem. I've posted a message in the GR's Feedback group, but I'm afraid it's Safari. I'm about to check Firefox now. Bleech...

Sandra | 25908 comments Nope, no demons in E&E shelves either. Looks like Charley :)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Thank you for checking, Sandra! I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately, I've discovered my viewing problem is Safari. That's a real pain. I'm going to be switching back and forth between browsers whenever I need to mark a shelf until they get it fixed.

Lovely... I usually go to the book I'm looking at and search each page for the specific tag, but tonight I'd have to do that on Chrome and I just can't wrap my head around it. Charley Davidson is a decent read. It's been awhile since I've read the last book. It's probably time.

...I spent some time looking, couldn't find anything (or anyone either) that I was interested in reading/meeting for a starting point in the "Demons" category. but I came across this author I really liked 9 or 10 years ago, before I got my first laptop PC. You are going to have sooooo much fun reading the Iron Druid Chronicles!!! They are hilarious! My husband and I enjoy that series quite a lot. We're looking forward to the next full size novel to come out. I "think" it's late this year or early in 2018? I'd have to check. The audiobooks are really, really good!

Happy Reading!

Yep, that's where the popular links come from - the book pages.

That's why in the thread How to Find a Book for BSB it tells you a couple of ways to find a book you're interested in, especially if you don't want to wade through all the pages of the list.

Review: There went 8 hours I'll never get back. Tijan books have always been a guilty pleasure of mine.. There's usually no redeeming quality to the books but they usually can be counted on to offer pure escape. This one was definitely not escape material, other than the countdown to the escape I kept picturing was at the end of the book. Had this not been for a challenge, I would have dnf'd for sure. (And I do not quit books.) The characters were shallow. The story of demons and angels has been done eleventy-billion times and there was absolutely nothing different about this story to keep me awake interested.

Review:

It's been eight or maybe even ten years since I first became aware of the World of the Iron Druid. I was fascinated then, and am even more so now. Our main character is "older than the New Testament", 2100 years or more, and personally knew or knew of most or all of the gods and demi-gods (including Jesus, Joseph and Mary) of all the pantheons on earth, being himself tied to the earth and able to "speak" with Gaea the earth mother, first of the early Greek gods, born of Chaos. Atticus O'Sullivan hails from Ireland, but has lived all over the world.
In a moment sitting on an old widow's porch he reflects,
"Unless you find someone to spend some time with (and that time is sunlight, golden minutes when you forget you’re alone), that vise will eventually crush your heart. [...] It’s other people who have kept me alive so long—and I include Oberon in that. Other people in my life right now, who help me forget all the other people I have buried or lost: They are truly magic for me."
(...Oberon is an Irish Wolf Hound ...)
Hearne, Kevin: The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book One (p. 195)..

This pretty much sums up what you take away from the whole series if I remember correctly, and is why I liked it 10 years ago, and why I will read it again now, along with any additions ...

My Review :

There were a lot of funny lines in this book, which is the one standard I've come to expect from this series. However, I found myself increasingly frustrated with this particular installment. We do get a lot of "reveals" about Charlie, but the mystery plot (and the main topic of the book's summary) brought to Charley's doorstep was very broken up and confusing. This book is really about Charley getting herself back together after the experiences she suffered in the last book. She's become a bit reclusive with dead Aunt Lillian and Mr. Woo. Thanks to her friends, she's forced back into the real world to deal with family and financial crisis.

Overall, there were too many unrelated details crammed between the pages that I had to wonder why the author bothered with Harper and her fears that someone was trying to kill her in the first place. Of course, everything falls into place by the end of the book, I'll even say it does so quite nicely, but it was a frustrating time getting there.

I will keep going with the series as I have enjoyed other installments and I do enjoy the witty dialogue and chemistry between Reyes and Charley. With some of the new information we have available, perhaps Charley will return in the next installment as a much more put-together heroine.

Sorry to be MIA! It's been a very busy week with a big family event yesterday so I haven't had much time to get online and chat. Becky's Review

WOW! I find that I enjoy this series more with each book!

After the dramatic events in book two, I didn't think the author could possibly write a better book, but he proved me wrong.

In Voice of Mars we finally get a good look at Damien's interaction with the Mage King. Since Damien proved his capabilities on his last mission under the most stressful of circumstances, he has been promoted to Hand of the King and is being sent out on his first solo task. When I heard that the King was sending him to his homeworld of Sherwood, I immediately thought of his ex-girlfriend / almost fiancé, Grace. We haven't heard a peep from her since Part 1 of the Starship's Mage Omnibus!

With a deadly incident to investigate and tensions rising between Sherwood and their neighboring planet, Damien gathers his new security team ... (view spoiler)... acquires a starship and jumps to Sherwood. Damien and Grace have both changed significantly and it's fun to watch him anticipate their reunion. They didn't part on easy terms or talked to one another in four years. When Damien and Grace meet after all that time, the tension (view spoiler) is so thick you could cut the air with a knife! I loved it and the humorous dialogue Damien maintains with his security guard is hilarious! The author leaves nothing out of his visual cues, either, making this scene and the rest of the book a true delight to read!

Right away Damien gets to work on the investigation. As usual, things go sideways pretty much from the start. With an unknown person pushing the two planets towards civil war, Damien is in a race against time to save the lives of two planets and prevent a war that could spread to the entire galaxy.

These books have an excellent balance of action, mystery, magic, and science. The stories are always well organized, easy to follow, and complex enough to keep me interested. The space battles are phenomenal! I'm amazed that this author hasn't skyrocketed to the top of the SFF charts! I suspect that will change or certainly hope it does. He's exceptionally talented and has written a very unique series. Now that I'm almost caught up with the books, it's going to be a hard wait for the next one!

I highly recommend this book and the Starship's Mage series to Science Fiction Fantasy and/or Space Opera fans!

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments @Art.... I haven't run across that scenario yet, but it's possible that Starship's Mage and the Castle Federation series could crossover. Both series are set in the same world, but I believe they are in different centuries since there is no mention of magic in the Castle Federation. I've just started reading Glynn Stewart's books and I'm hoping that some of them will intersect.

The mage character the author creates in Starship's Mage, is really interesting. If you like magical battles with killer fighting skills, you'll enjoy watching Damien knock the snot out of his enemies. By book three, he has quite the reputation across the galaxy. We are reading Alien Arcana now and it's blowing us away! It's that good!
