J.W. | 229 comments I just finished "Aurora" by Kim Stanley Robinson and enjoyed it quite a bit, though it felt a tad bloated. Looking for more books about generational ships and colony ships.

J.W. | 229 comments I should mention I'd prefer it being more on the hard sci-fi side but if there are some great books that are primarily character driven in this genre I could go for it too.

Margaret | 428 comments Heinlein's Orphans of the Sky is a classic.

message 4: by Marc-André (new)

Marc-André Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama is about an alien ark, but writen from the point of view of Terrans who visite the strange passing vessel. It is a classic and very good if you do not mind thin plots and characters, and instead focus on the ark itself.

In Charles Stross' Accelerando, part of it happens on a generational ship of sorts. But people's minds are downloaded in the ship instead of the actually travelling physically on such a ship.

If you can read French, Bernard Weber's Le papillon des étoiles is about a generational ship and the people on it.

There is a list here on goodreads about generational ships. https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Trike The short story and essay collection Going Interstellar has a couple stories and essays about generation ships. This collection is hard science fiction and has a very good signal to noise ratio. Mostly superb stories.

John Siers | 256 comments Rite of Passage by Alexei Panshin. It's an old book (copyright 1968), and I first read it a couple of decades ago; but I still remember it as a good read.

Definitely a generational ship novel, start to finish.

J.W. | 229 comments Thank you for all the recommendations! I was already waiting on Children of Time at the library so I'll start there and work through more!

message 11: by Glynis (new)

Glynis | 29 comments I enjoyed Learning the World by Ken Macleod. It is also a first contact story but I found his focus on generational ship problems very interesting.

message 12: by Donald (new)

Donald | 240 comments One of the plot strands of On the Steel Breeze is largely contained on a generation armada.

Jen (jenlb) | 174 comments I haven't read it for a while, but I quite liked Brian Aldiss' Non-Stop . Heart of the Comet is another favourite.

J.W. | 229 comments Children of Time was amazing! Wow. Loved it. On to another!

Ben Nash | 118 comments Not sure how hard it is, but I liked Mur Lafferty's Six Wakes. It's a murder mystery with clones set on a generation ship.
