Kari, here's what's on page 277:

#9 ribald - wanton; indecent; offensive; vulgar
#16 riddle - 1) a clever question with an unexpected answer; a puzzling thing 2) to pierce with many holes
#22 rife - prevalent; common or frequent in occurance; widespread

I had two books come to mind for riddle. I thought of Tom Marvolo Riddle in the second Harry Potter book, and the riddle contest that Bilbo and Gollum have in The Hobbit.

I am going out of town this morning. (I'm helping my daughter and her family move to a different state.) I will not have access to the internet until I get home Sunday afternoon. And I'm not taking my dictionary with me :)

You are welcome to leave a request for definitions, but I won't be able to fill them until Sunday afternoon.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Moving is never fun, but the process went smoothly. I'm so glad that I decided to help my daughter drive to her new home. Friday night she came down with a terrible headache, with nausea. Probably stress related. Anyway, who knows what she would have done with another 6 hour drive with 4 small kids.

I chose #16 riddle and read The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas . Camille’s father hires Jake as her bodyguard because she’s in danger, but there are many puzzles concerning who wants to harm her and why. Camille seeks answers about the threats, but her father only speaks in riddles. There are also some riddles concerning Jake’s past.

This will be an ongoing reading challenge that anyone can play.
Jump in at any time to request your definitions from a dictionary.

Here's how it works:
Step 1: pick a number between 7 - 360
Step 2: pick three numbers between 1 - 25

www.random.org

I will then post the three definitions you chose in Step 2, found on the page number you picked in Step 1. Then you will use one of those definitions to find a book.

The book can have the definition in the title, be found on the cover, or suggested somehow by the definition.

Here's an example of a post:

Re-reads are okay.

Lots of cooking going on - pig roast, pancakes and lots of cooking at the festival and deep frying at the snack shack

#17 bull - 1) describing the stock market when prices are going up and the economy is strong 2) male animal of the ox, cow, whale, or other animals

How do you pronounce the second one - the first one is pretty common so I think I got it but have no idea about the second

Completion post:
#4 halfway - midway between two points
#11 halve - to divide in two
#17 hamster - a rodent similar to a rat, with large cheek pouches often kept as a pet

My first thought seeing halfway and halve was a in-between-numbers book for a series. I'm not sure yet what I'll read but think I'll go for this option.
My first hamster thought was Rex - Stephanie Plum's pet :-) Perhaps I'll re-read one of my favorite books in the series we'll see :-)

I went with my first idea and read yesterday Tainted Angel by Sadie Haller see Seven Naughty Seals it's #1.5 in the Tainted Pearl series. I read this book for this challenge - otherways I'm not sure I'll read this one in the next future since I don't have one of the books yet and once again I regretted to read a book outside a series - it included way too many spoilers to the previous two books and only today I found the prequel in another box grrrr. At least now I know I like the author's style and I'm looking forward to read the other two books as soon as I get my hands on the novel between the two shorter books I already have.

I liked the randomiser idea some of the people use and decided to go for it. My next set: 305: 2, 17 & 25

Agnieszka wrote: "How do you pronounce the second one?"

There is a hard 't' sound on the end, as in Jimmy Buffett (the singer).

Here's what the randomiser chose for you:
#2 spiritual - airy; motivated by the soul; holy; religious
#17 spool - a round object used to wind thread or wire
#25 spout - 1) the lip of a container from which liquid is poured 2) to spurt; to discharge; to gush forth

Hmmm. spiritual might be the easiest to find a book for. There seems to be a lot of cozy mysteries about crafters, so you might be able to find a spool on a cover for one of those books.

Unfortunatelly I was off-line for quite some time and read in this time An Apple For Christmas (Christmas Traditions) by Darlene Franklin 3* 11/21 & Hope...the Best of Things by Joni Eareckson Tada 6* 11/21 - a Christian Christmas short story & a short spiritual non-fiction book

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2039 comments I liked the randomiser idea some of the people use and decided to go for it. My next picks: 188: 12, 13 & 23
#12 limousine - a long automobile with many seats and a permanent top
#13 limp - 1) without stiffness; not firm 2) the way you walk when one leg is hurt
#23 link - 1) a connection; a bond; a tie 2) to be joined together; to unite

I'm not sure yet which one I'll go with with some thinking I have a general idea for:
link - anything romantic suspense - the romance gives plenty of possibility for connection
limousine - most of the middle class cars in Germany are called limousines and the form of this one No Accident fits here pretty well.
12/2: In the end I decided to go with #23 link (implied in the blurb + RS) and read Special Agent Francesca (Undercover FBI #1) by Mimi Barbour by Mimi Barbour 5* 12/1- Francesca had istant connection with several people after she moved to Las Vegas to escape her dominant mother. By chance #13 limp & #12 limousine fit as well. At the beginning of the book Francesca's mother sent her a limousine to pick her up for a last meeting before she left NY & (view spoiler)
I'm so happy the book was at least as great as I expected after reading the blurb. I'm looking forward to continue this series as sell as the previous Las Vegas series - the author could become one of my new favorites :-)

My next definitions (random): 29: 22, 21 & 9
#9 attrition - a gradual wearing down
#21 augur - to foretell; to see into the future; to be an omen => anything with a prophet or supernatural elements - perhaps Knowing
#22 August - the 8th month of the year, having 31 days => published or bought in August or birthday/sibling themed (my sister's an August child) Covenant Child (siblings)

12/5: In the end I went with The Witch Tree (Anna Denning Mystery #1) by Karin Kaufman part of Fatal 5 by Christy Barritt for #21 augur as soon as I relised it has to do with witches and similar stuff. Additionally it fit perfectly for #9: the self-appointed witch tried to wear down the MC because Anna dared to stand up to her during their first-time meeting - one of her most prefered techniques was mau-mauing - and I learned another wonderful new expression :-)
It's the beginning of a series about Anna Denning a widdowed genealogist and I was amazed about Karin Kaufman`s choice of a topic for a Christian suspense novel. In the beginning I wasn't sure this can work but it's one of the better Christian novels I read this year. I'm aware it's not for everyone but I loved the plot and most of the characters very much. (view spoiler)

My next set: 58: 13, 19 & 1
#1 chaos - disorder; confusion; upheaval
#13 chariot - a horse-drawn cart
#19 chart - 1) a piece of paper or spreadsheet with information on it, indicating patterns, information, or changes 2) to plan a route on a map of the ocean or other large area
First my thoughts to the three definitions:
#1 chaos - life itself and especially what we've done to earth and how we treat other people
#13 chariot - historical (fiction)
#19 chart - so many ideas I can't list them all - so here those most important:
1) technology - charts was the only set of skills I struggled for a really long time time with in excell (my favorite computer tool) and I still have much to learn in this area
2) business life
3) church - our church uses many of them
4) studies
5) numbers in general - and I'm a number junkie :-)))))))))))))))))))))))))
6) colorful
7) give me more ;-)

I think I have the perfect book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens its a historical Christmas novel, the MC is a business owner dealing with numbers/accounting and as far as I remember from the movie there's pretty much chaos in it - in several forms :-) I think it's finally time for me to read it :-)
12/7: For a change I finished the originally planned book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and as expected it fit for all three words :-)

My next set: 146: 14, 10 & 1
#1 guilty - 1) legally charged with a crime 2) full of shame; feeling remorse
#10 gun - a weapon consisting of a metal tube used to shoot bullets under pressure
#14 gutter - drainage ditch; drainpipe; the lower ground or channel along the side of the road
guilty and gun go together perfectly. Can you squeeze gutter into the same book as well?

Not an issue - I love the expression 'mind in the gutter/get your mind out of the gutter' since I read it for the first time and so I decided to go for Bind (Manhattan Lux Book 1) by Olivia Devon by Olivia Devon part of the Seven Naughty Seals by Sidney Bristol anthology - kinky Christmas romantic suspense - the blurb indicates all three words :-) It's such a perfect timing I wasn't sure if I'll start/read this one this book or another one this week anyway - now I know which one I'll read first *grins*

12/9: I'm so dissapointed! The book itself was so fun and great but the anthology included only part of the book and that wasn't mentioned in the description - I got now the single book edition (was luckily free) but still I feel so cheated and I'm angry - sorry guys I had to voice it! - grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Anyway: So far the book fit for #14 gutter explicitly - the other two did not appear yet - since the male MC is a former SEAL it's obvious he's had his share of gun situations. The owner with some hand picked employees are looking for the mind behind the security breach in the club - they are not interested in Daisy - the employee who helped they were able to prove Daisy's guilty of aiding and abetting but want the 'real' perp.

My next set: 96: 2, 3 & 5
#2 dictate - to speak into a recording device or so that someone else can write or type what is said 2) to impose; to decree; to command - dictator - totalitarian systems, governments or rulers or forcing employees or other people someone's in charche of to do something
#3 dictation - speaking words to be written down or transcribed - secretaries, office work
#5 diction - enunciation of words - haughty upper class people or socialites

diction makes me think of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, (or My Fair Lady on Broadway).
I read this year A Twist of Faith (Mitchell's Crossroads #1) by Pepper D. Basham a modern Christian variation of Pygmalion and I still don't like the entire betting on other people's lives starting point - most of the people which liked Pygmalion seemed to enjoy this one as well - so I'm not even going to look into it :-)

12/29: Finally found a book for my current words :-) I planned to go with dictate and today I started The Brands Who Came For Christmas (The Oklahoma Brands, #1) by Maggie Shayne (a book I didn't plan to read but landed time and again on it and tought I'll read it finally so it stopps distracting me from the books I planned) and relised the MC's father dictated his life course not even bothering to care if it's what his son wants. I'm really curious how it will play out.
12/31: I finished the book yesterday. I liked the general story line & characters well enought but struggled very much with the New Age/superstitions/fate... stuff so much I doubt I'll ever read anything else by this author :-(

My next words: 297: 4, 14 & 19
#4 slacks - pants or trousers for casual wear
#14 slavery - the concept of owning people as properry
#19 sleep - 1) a time of rest, when not awake or alert

slacks should be easy to find on a book cover.
1/13: My first though seeing sleep was insomnia and I started to check the blurbs and previews for any signs of it. Finally today I found in A Royal Christmas Gift (Happily Ever After #1) by Luann McLane reference to insomnia and decided to start it right away. So far it's fun but poorly edited :-(
I finished A Royal Christmas Gift (Happily Ever After #1) by Luann McLane and it's not a must-read. It was entertaining, rather low on character development though light and fun plot (even if nothing very original to it). The book was so poorly edited I was wondering what kind of publisher this is - it would be bad enough for an indipendent author but more than dissapointing for a book with a publisher behind :-(

The randomiser gave me: 93: 11, 13 & 16

Step 1: 7 - 360
Step 2: 1 - 25

Would someone pick my next numbers for..."

Thank you, Agnieszka. My random words are:

#1 shaft - 1) a long thin pole 2) a long hole leading to a mine 3) a ray or beam
#6 shambles - a scene of disorder
#17 shawl - a long piece of cloth worn over the shoulders and head

shaft reminds me of a YA book where the main character gets kidnapped and held in a mine shaft. I think I'll re-read Chaos.

Agnieszka, your new words are:

#12 limousine - a long automobile with many seats and a permanent top
#13 limp - 1) without stiffness; not firm 2) the way you walk when one leg is hurt
#23 link - 1) a connection; a bond; a tie 2) to be joined together; to unite

I don't think the definition for limousine is very descriptive. Here's a picture:
