Nancy has a good point. At first, I thought certain threads were old. Then I noticed the newest sort link, but for awhile I dismissed current and active threads as being out dated :)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks for your comment above - the problem rectified itself but some suggested I hit the date icon on the top right hand side.

I see. It would still be nice if the default view had the newest on top :)

Sandra, that kind of info would be posted in the HF Discussions folder: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

We want to keep this one for official questions and info about the group. :)

I'd like to get suggestions for HF authors. I'm out of books on my current authors and I'd like to broaden my author pool. Please and thanks for the help!

It's not. Please abide by our rules regarding participation (25 post minimum, and correct threads) before self-advertising.

This thread is for questions about the group, or suggestions for changes, threads, folders, etc for the group.

Christine - I'd suggest taking a look at some of the threads in the Recommendations folder, or start a new one. It's helpful if you mention what you've read before if you're looking for suggestions to broaden your reading horizons. :)

Gwendolyn Gage Hello! I'm new to the HF genre, and I'm looking for recommendations... I like Susanna Kearsley, and I prefer clean reads (no sex). I can stand some language, but too much ruins the story for me. Any suggestions?

Hi Gwen,
First, welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll like it here and soon will have more than enough recommendations to keep you occupied forever. :)

I would suggest introducing yourself in the Intro thread, as this thread is really only for direct communication to mods about the group. (If you don't want to message us privately, that is.)

The intro thread can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

As far as recommendations, please feel free to start a thread in the recommendations folder, or look to see if your request already exists. The Recs folder is here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

There are two threads that might interest you:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If those don't fit what you're looking for you can open up a thread either under the Discussions folder or the Recommendations folder.

message 268: by Candice (new)

Candice | 4 comments I am looking for a book I read a while ago but don't remember the title or the author and was wondering if anyone could help me? It was a historical fiction book. It was about different families who emigrated to America and was set in New York in the 1800s. One family was French and the husband was badly injured and the wife tatted lace and made brioche bread. Another family was German and the oldest daughter got caught up with a bad man and ended up getting syphilis as an unmarried girl. It was at least 5 years ago that I read it and I can't remember all of the families. I am almost positive that the cover was yellow with a lady holding a parasol. Maybe with the Statue of Liberty in the background? Not sure on that one. Sorry I don't have more details. It was such a good book and I would really like to be able to read it again! Thanks for any help I can get!

You can offer a giveaway that we will host for you. If you're interested in doing that, you can PM Jackie and she'll set it up for you. We ask that people who win also review the book.

Edit to add: Other than what's outlined in our rules regarding advertising by active members, we do not allow marketing.

Kathryn Johnson (httpgoodreadscomkathrynkjohnson) Moderator Jackie, I don't want to break any rules but I do have a free Kindle download to offer members. Now through 10/13/14. Am I allowed to post the link here? It's the third Mary Hart Perry novel, currently with 4.8 stars on Amazon. Please let me know. I want to be legal. ;-) Kathryn (aka Mary Hart Perry)

Hi and welcome to the group, Rackell!

message 283: by Wesley (new)

Wesley Redfield | 42 comments We are building a critical mass, so let's tee up some questions about writing historical fiction. I'll kick it off. If you don't like this topic supply others. Here is a question I have in the study guide of my novel about enslavement of Indians in what is now the American Southwest. "Many agents, editors, and publishers refuse to permit nineteenth century racial epitaphs in publications. Do you believe that this is good or bad for readers of historical fictions? Why?"

message 284: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Hi Wes, this thread is not the appropriate place for this topic - this is for discussing group related questions, such as navigation, rules, polls, nominations, etc.

You'd want to post that in the GR Author Zone folder please. :)

message 292: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Anton | 199 comments This is for anyone, especially other authors, who participate in Goodreads. I just went through all My Books and reshelved them according to official Goodreads genres [https://www.goodreads.com/genres/list]. This was particularly important for books I've written so potential readers can find them. For example, I added France and Medieval to the novels set there and then, and changed the not-so-popular Judaica to Jewish and Judaism. I also spelled out Historical Fiction to replace hist-fict.

Now I have a favor to ask from anyone who has shelved any of my books, or any other author's, as Read, Currently Reading, or To-Be-Read. Could you please add the genres above to your shelf to describe them? Apparently Goodreads will not list any books under a particular genre unless at least two people shelve them as such, and a quick check of those who reviewed my novels showed that the majority didn’t assign them to any genre. Other authors may want to alert readers to do this for their books, and I salute those, apparently few, readers who do shelve their books according to genre. Thanks.

I follow this thread closely so that I can make sure that questions pertaining to the group are answered, and off-topic discussion in this group results in unnecessary notifications to me, and clutters the thread for others who might be looking for an answer to their question.

Please post in the correct thread or folder. This is not the appropriate place for recommendations or other discussion. This is for GROUP RELATED questions or suggestions. Starting now, off-topic posts in this thread will be deleted.

If you are unsure where to post, or how, then you should ask that here - but this is not a catch-all thread.

Thank you!

Erica | 414 comments Hi mods,

Hope this is a question relevant for this thread. I was just wondering if we were going to have a Mount TBR challenge at some point this year. I think I joined in in 2014 and really enjoyed it so would love to see another one! But realise it might take a bit of mod's time to sort so understand if that's a reason why it hasn't been done recently (or maybe it has and I've just missed it somehow). Anyway that's just a suggestion from me :)

Here's a link to the last one I remember:
