you are so right! either authors get lazy, or their muse vanishes, or they only made it because of massive publicity (dan brown, anyone?). harry potter is an exception - rowling kept up the good work through and through.

Can I ask you all to move this conversation to the Random Chit Chat folder? Either the Random Conversation thread or a new thread regarding bestseller list hype? :)
This thread is specifically for group related questions or comments.
Thanks!

Sorry Becky totally my fault. I thought I was making a group related comment regarding finding HF and the occasional HF challenge tasks.
No biggie, Ellen, it happens! I just always check for new messages in this thread to keep up with questions etc for the group.
Thanks! :)
Thanks! :)
I thought you would like to know that the following thread is not funtioning properly! I have received abou 8 emails and they are all exactly the same. You see there is no possibility of commenting. Here is the thread that is strange:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
For me, message 3558 is as far as I can go.but by accident I found if you click on the "view spoiler" in message 3558 and reveal the spoiler then you can scroll further.
Hope it works for you.
Donna, yes it works for me. I wonder what will happen the next time I get an mail relating to this thread. Jackie, I do not know what IE7 is!
I will now go and see it the thread works again. Maybe I have to wait for a new comment to appear. Could one of you do a test comment?
IE7 means Internet Escape browser version 7. Most likely you will keep having the problem if it is a GR glitch. When I'm at work I use IE7 and experience the problem from time to time, but when I am at home I use Google Chrome browser and I don't have the problem. If you experience the problem just click on the spoiler tag and it should let you view the entire thread. It sucks since it reveals the spoiler, but that's all you can do until GR fixes the problem.
I don't think it is a general browser problem, just something with this particular thread and maybe the way the spoiler feature was used.I have no problems on the threads on my mystery site that use the spoiler feature.
It's more than just that thread, it's happened to me in other threads in other groups when using Internet Explorer.
Yeah, I don't think it is either but I have experienced the problem in other threads from time to time. I have reported it to GR though in the feedback forum. Hopefully, it's a quick fix.
Couldn't that spoiler be removed by Victoria? I suggested that over on the thread? For me it only happens on this thread. The thread is very busy. Soon it will be suite a problem.
The GR staff has to look at the problem though in order to fix it. They can't do this if Victoria removes the tag. It's happening in other threads too, certainly not widespread but still it's an issue and should be fixed by them.
Right, but typed wrong or not, the problem only occurs in IE as far as I know. If GR could have looked at it, they could have solved it so it wasn't a problem even if it was typed wrong. I found another location to provide them with to look at though, so it's not a problem anymore.
Around the end of April. We usually do nominations around the 15th of the prior month and then vote by the end.
Which reminds me that I need to put up nominations for April/May. :)

For Philippa Gregory fans; I've read two of her books, The Other Boleyn Girl(which I loved)and Wideacre (which I did not love). Which of her books would you recommend?
Hi Karen, this thread is for group related questions, comments and suggestions to the moderators. We have a folder for recommendations here, and a folder for favorite authors, which contains a thread about Philippa Gregory, here.
Please feel free to create a thread in the Recommendations folder or to revive the Philippa Gregory thread. I'm sure that people would be more than happy to help you out. :)

Are we having an October/November challenge #8? I am trying not to start a new book that I might use for the challenge that would start on Saturday. I'm trying to be patient, but failing miserably! You guys do such great challenges, I can't wait ;-)
Newbie here...with question. We have a monthly read, Pope Joan. When and how do the actual discussions take place?
Welcome to the group GardenSinger :)The actual discussion takes place as soon as the thread opens. You can post whatever you want to there...comments about the book, thoughts while reading, when you're going to start the book, etc. We don't follow a certain format or post discussion questions. It's a basic free for all, but if you would like to post discussion questions you are more than welcome too.
Tired to find the Selene of Alexandria book at my library, and believe it or not our whole library consortium (which is about 9 libraries) does not have this book.
Diane - ask the library to do an interlibrary request. I'm sure if it's in any United States library, they can request the book or books.
I know but it takes so long, sometimes 3 or 4 weeks. I've gotten books through that before but not if I needed it during a certain time frame. By the time I get it the month will be almost over. Not sure if I want to buy it, may just sit this one out. Thanks though Nancy, was just surprised because our library system is fairly large and this is the first book for any of the group discussions I couldn't get.
You are right about that. It does take time which is too bad if you need it for a specified date. Consider if you wouldn't mind sitting out for this discussion or it's worth it to you to pay for the book.
Do you have an ereader Diane? I have a nook and was planning on buying it through there. I can let you borrow it for the slotted 2 week period.
Jackie wrote: "Do you have an ereader Diane? I have a nook and was planning on buying it through there. I can let you borrow it for the slotted 2 week period."Thanks Jackie but no I don't have an e-reader but thanks so much for your offer. Think I just might sit this one out.
Nancy wrote: "Besides the challenge are there any group reads here?"
Yes - There's currently a discussion of Pope Joan, and the next group read (starting on October 15th) will be for Selene of Alexandria by Faith L. Justice.

Yes- I did see this on the home page. I'm trying to learn the ropes - I'm sure I'll get there someday. LOL. You read the book the first 15 days of the month and then discuss, right. Will look for Selene at the library or download.
No, the read and discussion is from the 15th of one month through the 14th of the following. There's no set process regarding how it's done - it's all at your own pace. :)
New here! Is a book still considered historical fiction (according to this group) if it goes back and forth between history and the modern day? I tend to like novels like this, a la People of the Book.
I think I saw above that the discussions aren't formal and sort of a free-for-all. I can see the merit in that as it allows people to post things that maybe they wouldn't otherwise if it didn't fit within a certain discussion. However, as it is now, the threads end up with a lot of posts 'I'm just starting!" or side conversations. I was wondering if it had been considered to make multiple discussions for a single group read. For example, for Pope Joan, there could have been a thread specifically about the religious concerns and ideas, one about the feminist aspect of the book, initial thoughts, etc. That way you would have a more clear conversation/discussion concerning the book. Just a thought!
Diane wrote: "Tired to find the Selene of Alexandria book at my library, and believe it or not our whole library consortium (which is about 9 libraries) does not have this book."Sorry it isn't available through the library (I know at least one person who reviewed a library copy.) I'm the author and have a "circulating" copy that I registered with Bookcrossing.com and would be happy to send it to you. I'll PM you.
Preventative Maintanence for Flu Season:(Don't give pharmaceutical companies all your money!)
Start eating super-foods now(spinach, collard greens, kale, carrots, etc). Get them from your garden or from the local market...not supermarkets.
Wash all fruits and veggies in a bowl of vinegar-water (1 to 6 ratio). Salmanela and other bacterias are running rampant.
Start taking at least 1000mg vitamin C every morning. Continue dosage through early Spring.
Get plenty of sleep. 8hrs should allow the body to recover from the previous day and rejuvenate for the upcoming day.
Lower your stress/anxiety levels. It's proven that stress negatively affects the immune system. Simplify your life...eliminate activities/socializing which are not absolutely necessary.
Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands...and, oh yes, wash hands.
GardenSinger, while that may be good advice, this is not the appropriate thread for it. Feel free to post this kind of thing in the Random thread. This thread should be used for official group questions, suggestions, etc.
