My recommendation for romance, I feel like I have a million options for you since you say that you want to get more in M/M romance:
the beginning to one of the best M/M series ever written; it's totally character driven and that's what makes these books (and don't be discouraged if the first couple of books you're not too crazy about, because it's the third one that really hits it out of the ball park).

. I enjoyed it but I was also just a little disappointed. I had high expectations for this book and the romance part fell short with all the violence in it. Still gave it 4 stars. Working on the other pick and the genre pick still :)
