Trixie Joanna - Wish I'd put it like that! Perfect :)

Monty J Heying Anamika is behaving like a troll, and we have all been suckered into responding to her troll post. Her profile says she is a "Goodreads Librarian." She's probably paid to drum up activity any way she can so Goodreads can charge more for advertising.

Ignore her.

okay that was a bit harsh.

Anthony Watkins But fair

Anthony Watkins Well maybe it was unfair to other paid hacks of goodreads but not to our 12 yr old troll

Anthony Watkins Yep, it's hard to defend a jerk without becoming one

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ When exactly was she a jerk?

Anthony Watkins From the beginning through every ensuing post

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ Lets agree to disagree on that one

Anthony Watkins Okaayy:)

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ :)
Well im glad we were civilized about that. See, we had different opinions but we didn't start an argument. :P

It sounds like the folks on this thread simply want you say why you hated it - most people do that, give a reason. For example, I hated 50 Shades of Grey because it was written so badly and felt anybody could write garbage like that.

Mae Belle wrote: "Monty J wrote: "Anamika is behaving like a troll, and we have all been suckered into responding to her troll post. Her profile says she is a "Goodreads Librarian." She's probably paid to drum up ac..." quoting you when I said something similar-- really???

message 216: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Debruyne Sorry Monty J. But I'm a goodreads librarian too and I never got ask such a thing. As goodreads librarian you can just add books on goodreads and combine editions and well, the kind of thing a librarian does: keeping a library organized. Just wanted to point that out.

message 217: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee nice to see that those of us who are GR librarians are hacks...especially since we spend our own time fixing jacked up book records for others

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ Mae wrote: "Belle wrote: "Monty J wrote: "Anamika is behaving like a troll, and we have all been suckered into responding to her troll post. Her profile says she is a "Goodreads Librarian." She's probably paid..."

Wait what?

Anthony Watkins Sorry, I didn't mean to imply all librarians were paid hacks. As I know quite a few, most are dedicated volunteers who do wonderful work for free. I meant to say, that Anamika was gong paid hacks who do promote for money on social media a bad name!!!

My sincerest apologies!!!

It's just a shame you didn't show the same civility to certain others ;)

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ Well certain others didn't show me that same civility... XD
But whatever, i know that i was overly defensive and for that i apologize. I know i was rude and i hope i can still be somewhat friends with you guys, but im sorry i still don't agree with that whole brits and americans thing. :)

message 222: by Trixie (new) - rated it 3 stars

Trixie Well it's odd you can't agree with something that is fact, Belle - that would be like me saying I don't agree that the events of 9/11 happened - it's there for all to see. Because you can't SEE these subtle differences does not mean that they don't exist. Take it from someone who has lived on both sides of the Atlantic. You know, these differences are what make our different cultures interesting - open your mind to it, it's not a bad thing! Embrace the differences...

As for your apology - that's great, and being friends is also great - so - hands across the ocean and all that :)

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ Well until i SEE it for myself im not going to agree. And sounds good. Lol. Sure. ;)

Mark Joyce wrote: "Anamika wrote: "One more time I repeat:I just want to know whether anyone else hates the diary.I understand that Anne Frank has suffered many difficulties and I'm not saying it is lame.Al I want to..."

Here we disagree while I am no fan of Shades of Grey I am of the opinion that with her books published she had already been very popular apparently and that was the reason she got published. And then the sales exploded and quite a lot of folks followed her example. It might be poorly written but there turned out to be a huge market for that kind of books. While it is not my taste the writer has done well and I am pleased whenever a writer succeeds and a whole lot of people complain that could do better. But the likes of her, Brown and Rowling are laughing all the way to the bank. And they all started a rage and as such deserve everything they got. Have there been better writers, sure, who cares but those who are clearly envious.

message 225: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee she was popular because she was well-known in the fanfiction community and was writing twilight fanfiction, which she then took, changed the names of the characters and republished - which is seriously ethically wrong to me

Maybe if you broadened your reading you might see these differences - until then you just keep your blinkers on ;)

Belle ~carry on my wayward son~ Okay im trying very hard not to write something rude or provocative right now.

she wrote the stories and she can do with them what she wants, like becoming a millionaire. Who wouldn't be flexible then. As for ethically wrong, why?? Twilight is another example of somebody who did quite well even if her writing skills were very much discussed and snickered at.
I like women writers or men writing stuff that enjoy, and I hope they are all successful. And that does not mean I want to read it, but I cannot hate it for the live of me.
Literature and hating, one example: Frank Herbert died too soon and left his Dune series with a huge cliffhanger never to be finished by him. I hate it he never got to finish it.

message 229: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee Mark wrote: "Dee wrote: "she was popular because she was well-known in the fanfiction community and was writing twilight fanfiction, which she then took, changed the names of the characters and republished - wh..."

because it literally was written as bella/edward set in the same place as twilight and she basically did a replace all with the names/places - if you don't have an issue with that ethically that's ok, but for me, she is basically making money off another author by using the idea of their characters/settings - its an unspoken rule in the FF that you don't make money off your work - and most authors who are ok with people writing FF make that as a clear requirement

message 230: by Mark (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mark I do not mind FF and I do not mind people making money of their passion.

I have once read some Twilight as a check on my daughters reading habits and decided that it was not my cup of tea. She is to young for Shades of Grey.

But my point is I do not hate this kind of literary output as so clearly is proven that there is a large market for it. And I am a fan of everybody reading!

I was just sitting here thinking about your inability to accept the Brit/American thing, so I'll ask the question that's running through my mind....why are you so unequivocal? Why are you so rigid in your thinking? Are you threatened by this? I'm puzzled by your stance and would really like to know :)

why not - authors own the copyright on their work, FF is derivative of that work, so if they dont' want FF written, then they have that right - there are some authors (Diana Gabaldon I know for one) who specifically say that they do not want FF written based on their worlds.

See to me just changing names and locations is wrong, its essentially co-opting someone elses work/ideas and using them as yours - but i'm apparently in the minority - until 50SoG (or 50SoC as I refer to it), FF of popular books wasn't done - yeah, you could find derivative stories of books that were in public domain (things like Jane Austen), but FF for something like Twilight (and it has spawned many others, including Gabriel's Inferno, and Poughkeepsie) isn't done - I honestly wish just one author would stand up and say no, this isn't legit and sue their asses and let a court decide if its legit or not

No. No. And no. Im not. Its just, until i see this for myself i cannot accept it. Im not threatened nor am i rigid in my form of thinking... I just can't agree with something until i know it to be true. And thats that. Lets just drop the matter ok? XD

You can always HATE it like Anamika or just ignore it. Somehow I doubt if the books will be known in ten twenty years time.

Unlike that book/diary by Anne Frank which will still be an important document of our gruesome past.

message 236: by Mae (last edited Jun 18, 2014 06:51AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mae @Belle -- According to the American Webster dictionary a nuance is a very small difference in tone and meaning. As I said before, and you mocked me, I speak 5 languages and have lived all over the world. I can guarantee you that there are different nuances or differences in tone and meaning between certain expressions as used in the US and the UK. Joodith's point was accurate and "first hand" since she is a Brit that has lived in America, and Trixie another Brit, has been trying to explain that this differences do exist. What I am trying to say, me an American who lived in Ireland, is that you don't need to see it for yourself, for it to be true, and it is not about having faith. This is what a book like AF Diary main purpose is-- we did not see the holocaust, or suffer persecution or had to hide, but by reading this book we learn "first hand"what it was like. ( Read the Guardian on line and watch a couple of hours of BBC America and you will get it)

Elizabeth I thought we all agreed that Anamika is a bored child who is toying with us like a pile of ants. She is not worth trifling with. Why is everyone still here and arguing about 50 Shades of Grey? IF YOU KEEP YELLING AT EACH OTHER, SHE WINS.

message 239: by Trixie (last edited Jun 17, 2014 11:44PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Trixie Belle - you say you can't believe something to be true unless you actually see it. Do you believe what Anne wrote in her diary? Did you actually see what she saw?

You say you're not rigid in your thinking, but don't seem open to the idea of broadening your outlook, which can be done very easily. Mae has made one or two suggestions - and you can even do those things online.

Yep. A hoax. As my college roommate would say: "A pissant with a hard-on lying supine on a wood chip floating down-river yelling, 'Raise the drawbridge!'"

Zzzzzzzzz.

Kay My nephew, who is currently in graduate school, used to drive us crazy during the holidays: Most of my family would be hugged up to TV sports. However, my nephew would be making surreptitious phone calls to anonymous victims asking them if their refrigerator was running....ah well.

Mae We are still here… because we are having an interesting discussion, about nothing and everything remotely related to Anamika's post. I think it has generated some interesting debates. I think Anamika is trying to figure out a reason to justify her comment. Hopefully in this process quite a few young ones have developed or changed their ideas. It is not about wining, its about debate and information. So what if there is no big reveal? I have enjoyed myself. Someone wants to win? Is there really a purpose to any of these threads, other than discussion? Entertainment ? Killing time? Talking to people all over the world? I say bring it on!

Trixie Anamika - what is your role. exactly, as a Goodreads Librarian?

message 250: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee Trixie - a GR librarian basically fixes book records - errors in descriptions, editing series/awards, adding book covers, merging multiple titles of the same book into one file etc
