Antti Tuuri’s The Winter War is the novelist’s sincere tribute to the Finnish soldiers of the Winter War, the 105-day war following Russia’s invasion of Finland in November of 1939. Events are seen through the eyes of Martti Hakala, now an old man, who had been a rank-and-file soldier of the 23rd Infantry regiment, a unit drawn mainly from the province of Ostrobothnia. Aika karua tekstiä. Tuollaista sota varmasti oli.

Very cool story about the Finnish army taking on the Russians
Matti Karjalainen
Vuosien varrella olen tykästynyt entistä enemmän Antti Tuurin kirjoitustyyliin, ja niinpä päätinkin hetken mielijohteesta lukea "Talvisodan" (Otava, 1989) uudelleen. Olen romaanin lukenut joskus kymmeniä vuosia sitten, todennäköisesti vähän liian nuorena, eivätkä mielikuvat olleet siitä kovinkaan vahvoja.

"Talvisodassa" kertojahahmona toimii vanha rintamaveteraani, jonka äänen kirjailija on tavoittanut erittäin uskottavasti; voisi melkein kuvitella, kuinka tarinaa kerrotaan keinutuolista käsin, v

Dull, repetitive novel set amid one of history's least known and most pointless wars.

This book has great historical interest as the only major novel in the Finnish canon set against the Winter War of 1939-1940.

Besides that it's an extremely dry play-by-play retelling of war. Warfare is boring to read about most of the time, unless there is a compelling human aspect. Tuuri, apparently consciously, dehumanizes the narrator. When characters are killed left and right, even the narrator's closest relatives (this is not a spoiler as it is mentioned in one of the opening chapters), th

My grandfather fought in WWII on both sides of the war as he is from Finland. This book is yet another quality historical novel of the Winter War. If you don't know anything about the Fins fighting the Russians in the early part of WWII trying to hold on to their independence then you need to read this book. If you like to read historical war stories, WWII books, or in general want to know more about WWII that isn't in the massive collection historical books covering U.S European conquests or Pa ...more

So why does Tuuri refer to the invading army as "Russians" vs calling them "communists" or "Soviets?"

Pidin kirjasta, toimii loistavana introna kotimaisiin sotakirjoihin. Kirja on sivumääränsä ja suppeutensa vuoksi useimmille helpommin lähestyttävä kuin koko kansakunnan tuntema Tuntematon sotilas.
