Getting To Know You!

Random stuff - the something good happened thread
I think my rise in rankings is just because I picked some relevant ones off the list rather than making it up as I went.
My 4000+ rankings were on very generic science fiction keywords.I wish I'd written goblins now, I'd probably be in the top 250!
I wouldn’t let that stop you. I’m beginning to realise it’s about working the number and almost gaming the system.
I can understand that, given what I know. However, you're not doing anything wrong and no-one else considers it cheating. Book stuffing is cheating. You don't do that. Working around less utilised keywords isn't cheating. First book free and promoting the hell out of it is just damn good promotion when you've got other books ready to go with a price attached.
I still can't reconcile myself to giving something away for free and promoting it to climb the rankings without having something else there to be bought. I'd rather not be best selling in any keyword search and have multiple books than be a best seller in one keyword off the back of a free book. I wonder what would have happened to Modified if I had given those 700 copies away on an Amazon promotion rather than Instafreebie.
I suspect Uninvited will be my freebie. It's only sitting at 38k at the moment. It's unlikely to break the 40k barrier.
That's the way I look at it. It will technically be novella length. Don't care. I've read padded books and they're quite tedious.
I've found that with some authors too. Sometimes less is more. But as they progress, their books are longer and longer for no real reason. Lots of waffle and not at all tight.
I think everybody I have read more than half a dozen books from has done the same thing. The exception is Agatha Christie. I've read about 60 of the 80 something books she wrote and none of them puffed up unnecessarily towards the end of her life. Everyone else added more words. Not all of them were necessary.
Really? Firstly, I'd love to have the money for an editor. But what's the point in having one if you're not going to pay attention. Then again, I guess it can depend on the editor. And the publisher will be paying that fee, not her.Another paperback sale has turned up on my sales report in the UK which isn't my purchase. That accounts for the one on the Amazon ads thingy. So far I've sold one ebook and one paperback from Amazon ads. Better than a kick in the teeth.

I suppose we hold different views about the stories we write. I have my favourites. Some of them will never be published.I like Uninvited better than I did last year when I wrote it. (Still not sure about the title but it's better than Iridessian Haunts.)
D2D just sent me a royalty statement. I have no idea what I'm going to spend my 59c on but I'm sure I'll think of something :-)
I’ve had six days of book sales. It may be just one or two a day but I don’t care. This may not sound like much if it wasn’t for the fact until very recently I could say ‘I don’t sell books.’

A sale is a sale is a sale...

Thanks everyone. I've just got another review. That's four now and really good for something that has only shifted a few copies.
Looking at some of the promo places I need 5 reviews. That’s probably doable. I’ve got 4 with an average of 4.5. I’m not busting a gut. If it happens it happens. I’m not desperate to get ahead.

Thanks everyone. Sock is dry. I remembered to put an apron on whilst cooking dinner seeing as I’m a total liability.
Try sending in your books for promo sites with just the four. As they've scored highly, you might be allowed to promote. Try smaller sites?
There's a good discussion on book advertising to which you might want to contribute on the Indies Unlimited site:https://www.indiesunlimited.com/2018/...
I replied, Ted. I am awaiting moderation. My latest review on zon.com is a 3.5 from Long and Short Reviews. Thank you Carole, I think it was your suggestion that I try them. I had completely forgotten that I had sent them a badly cobbled together request.
I have discovered that Under a Dark Star has become a finalist in the eFestival of Words held by Bards and Sages Publishing. I had never heard of it and, initially, I did not know who had nominated my book. After checking it out, I find it's an OK place to be!I don’t have a vast army of Twitter or Facebook followers – I don’t even belong! If you would like to vote for Under a Dark Star (Best Historical Fiction) you can probably imagine how pleased I’d be :)
Here’s a link to the voting form:

I haven't a hope of competing with those who have armies of followers but I'd like to get at least some votes!
Thank you to those who take the time to vote.

Ooooh, thank you! I feel a bit better now. I imagined I might just have my husband's vote... I haven't dragged him to the pc yet.

I read it - it was a good review, though. They gave my Bulwark also 3 stars- Still, they have a lot of followers.

Looks like my recent promo got me 3 sales at .99 on iBooks. I've just upped the price again I've got £2.49 and $2.99. (shrugs, no idea what I'm doing.)
I couldn't agree more, Alex. I learn something about this business everyday. I love that authors share information.
I nicked the £2.49 price from one of your books Alex, so I hope you have a better idea than I do :-)

My Amazon ads are registering a £5.99 sale of a paperback which I know is one I bought for my daughter. It looks like I’m going to be charged for a click I didn’t make. Don’t know how that works.
