Yeh, the emails I’m getting about Dad from his ex pupils and stuff ... it’s amazing, and truly humbling. I definitely feel vindicated in loving him so much, I just hadn’t realised how many other people did! It’s a good feeling isn’t it. Yours do sound very much like mine from what you’ve said about them.

Cheers

Although the rules may well have changed by the time any of my readers need the info. I know what you mean though, there's so much admin.

Jim | 21813 comments Oh yes, the details will probably constantly differ. But a good undertaker will be able to help you through the maze. What will make it tricky is where the undertaker is working at the perimeter of their area, or in a local authority area they don't have a lot to do with

My friend whose husband died of dementia a couple of weeks after Dad clearly had a very much harder time with the undertakers than I did. Makes me realise how lucky I was with our lot, they were really superb.

message 807: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments It is well worth asking about some time before you need them. It isn't something that occurs to people but it is important

Churchwardens and Clergy deal with them a lot so might be able to give tips on general efficiency
But ideally ask somebody who's used the services of an undertaker in the last year or so

A good one makes things so much easier

The folks we used have been undertakers in Steyning for about 180 years. They’re lovely and as Dad was church warden for a fair while, the older ones knew him well so I think they were already predisposed to give him a good send off. They were brilliant about stuff like gauging what tone to set with each of us and when. It is a calling, perhaps, rather than something you can just do.

Yes I think you're right with this. It's surprising how many of them are family businesses with the business going down the family through the generations

yeh, I have one coming up about demonising groups of people and how it’s easier to understand your own prejudices when you’ve been on the end of other people’s. If I can get that done next week, it’ll be ready to go when I’m not able to get to t’interweb the following week. I have yours for next week.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8051 comments Yeh, I like a bit of Tallis, I’ll have to check I have downloaded everything you’ve published before I go on holiday next week. If I’m not careful, I miss things.

message 822: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments You cannot be too careful, if the next Tallis story isn't downloaded at exactly the right time, the sun will stop in its tracks, civilisation as we know it will crumble around us, and in all probability, you'll stub your toe on a chair leg walking through the house in the dark :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Ouch! So thats whats happened! Civilisation has been crumbling for a while already.... and global warming will probably do for the sun. And now I know why my toe is throbbing.

Something about advance warnings for family and friends - you have a lot of the material already from your posts.

Keep it personal, and you don't have to do a lot of research.

Yeh, that’s the thing, I do want to avoid research as much as possible. It needs to be about my experience and what I’ve learned. Although I guess some research would be useful.

This week I didn't have time for a proper post, so I've posted the Eulogy from Dad's funeral, because it's basically just a loosely strung together series of anecdotes about him, and him being the man he was, that means most of them are funny.

Jim | 21813 comments about that toilet :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I imagine they discovered it fairly soon...

message 846: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4845 comments Apparently a gold toilet has disappeared from a British museum where it was on loan. It was a working toilet, hooked up to the plumbing, and things got water-damaged when it was removed.

You can't make these things up.

message 847: by David (new)

David Edwards | 417 comments Alicia wrote: "Apparently a gold toilet has disappeared from a British museum ..."

Actually it was a stately home, Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke of Marlborough. As a consequence of an ancestor being a successful general rather more than 300 years ago, he doesn't have to work for a living.

Do you think that writing a book called "The Golden Toilet" might set one on the path to a Nobel Prize for Literature?

message 848: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21813 comments apparently it was an art installation
To quote from the guardian

The golden lavatory, named America, drew large crowds when it was exhibited in New York. It had been installed in a wood-panelled chamber opposite the room where Churchill was born.

Blenheim palace is the ancestral seat of the Duke of Marlborough.

Ahead of the toilet’s installation, the duke’s half-brother, Edward Spencer-Churchill, founder of the Blenheim Art Foundation, said last month the lavatory wouldn’t be “the easiest thing to nick”.

“Firstly, it’s plumbed in and secondly, a potential thief will have no idea who last used the toilet or what they ate,” he told the Times. “So no, I don’t plan to be guarding it.”

The palace’s chief executive, Dominic Hare, urged anyone with any information about the theft to contact police.

“Following the Thames Valley police statement we can confirm ‘America’, the art piece by Maurizio Cattelan, has been stolen in the early hours of this morning,” he said.

“We are saddened by this extraordinary event, but also relieved no one was hurt. We are very grateful to our staff and to Thames Valley police for their rapid and brave reactions.

“We knew there was huge interest in the Maurizio Cattelan contemporary art exhibition, with many set to come and enjoy the installations. It’s therefore a great shame an item so precious has been taken, but we still have so many fascinating treasures in the palace and the remaining items of the exhibition to share.”
