※The Hobby Corner Monthly Challenge※

descriptiondescription

You never know where an idea for a challenge can come from...and this one is no exception! A conversation with my husband led to this little challenge: A feature on a specific hobby every month!

For February, I'm featuring an indoors hobby that can help you relax: coloring!

There are three different ways to participate in this challenge: do a spell out of any of the words I'll list below, complete a number of tasks that correspond to a level, or mix and match to meet that level goal!

How To’s:
• Pick your level
• Read one book per task/letter
Articles 'A', 'And', 'An', and 'The' do not count to match to a letter in the spell outs!
• Re-reads are allowed
• There are no page minimums or limits unless noted

Duration: February 1st to February 28th, 2017

Levels:
Outlined: 4 or less books
Shaded: 5-7 books
Filled In: 8-10 books
Relaxed: 11+ books

Spell Outs
Crayons ◈ Colored Pencils ◈ Markers ◈ Coloring Pages ◈ Coloring Book ◈ Paper ◈ Frame ◈ Hard Surface ◈ Comfortable Chair

Tasks
Paint books and coloring books emerged in the United States as part of the "democratization of art" process, inspired by a series of lectures that concluded that all, regardless of background, students stood to benefit from art education.: Read a book where a character attends a lecture or is a student of some kind
Coloring books have been used to advertise a wide variety of products.: Read a book where someone works in advertising
Coloring books are widely used in schooling for young children.: Read a Children's Book
Coloring books have been used as teaching aids for developing creativity and knowledge of geometry.: Read a book where someone has to be creative or work with geometry
Coloring books have seen wide application in the health professions as educational tools. One nurse, trying to limit the trauma of child surgery, described how the use of a coloring book "might help [the child] to understand what was going to happen to him.": Read a book with a doctor or nurse as the main character
Coloring books are also used in rehabilitation of accident victims to aid recovery of hand–eye coordination.: Read a book where a character is in an accident or in rehab
Coloring books are used with autistic children both for entertainment and for their soothing effect. One of the appeals of adult coloring books is that they help users relax and de-stress, because of the same soothing effect seen with autistic children.: Read a book where a character is on the autistic spectrum somewhere or where one character soothes another
Coloring books have been used to explain political events and issues.: Read a book with a politician main character or with a political hot button issue
The first commercially successful adult coloring books were published in 2012 and 2013 and began increasing in popularity in 2015.: Read a book set or published in 2012 or 2013
By November 2015, Crayola began offering its own line of adult coloring books.: Read a book set or published in November 2015, or in 2015 in general.

If you have questions about the challenge, feel free to ask!

Also, if you have a hobby you'd like to see featured over the next year, send me a PM! I do still have a couple of slots open in the 2017 schedule!
