JANUARY - A book that is being adapted into a movie or TV show in 2017
So which book are you guys picking? I think I'm gonna go with Big Little Lies. I wanna read the Handmaiden's Tale this year but not right now cause I bet it's depressing
I might read Hidden Figures...and Wonder. I'm constantly seeing it at the library and I've been wanting to give it a chance.
I've been meaning to read The Handmaiden's Tale so I'll probably go with that. Maybe The Dark Tower if I find I have time left.(Also I follow the other ONTD goodreads group for recs but I don't comment there, so I'll introduce myself: my username on ONTD is maxvandenburg)
I'm going to read Hidden Figures, since I just ordered it for my library :) I'm calling dibs on checking it out there!
Is Station Eleven really being adapted this year though? I found news from last year about it being optioned, and nothing more
I don't think it's happening

oh, how perfect! I got Hidden Figures for Christmas so I was starting that anyway - seeing the movie on Friday, hopefully! if we're counting limited releases, A Monster Calls would also work? I don't think it's out wide yet, but it's a beautiful book - I would recommend reading the illustrated version. stunning. I keep meaning to read A Wrinkle in Time. soooo excited for the adaptation.
I got Big Little Lies as a Christmas present and finished reading it. Some interesting twists and turns and I have to admit I couldn't put it down! I'm going to read the Handmaiden's Tale next.

Ugh, my closet is full of books that are not being adapted until later. However, I do have The Handmaiden's Tale... and The Expanse (does this one count, even though it has been adapted?).

Yes, limited releases count!

This is a TV show, right? it counts because there's going to be a second season this year, so the adaptation is on-going

Yay!! I think this month I'll read Hidden Figures (can't wait to see the movie! But I'm going next weekend so I better get going with the book) and maybe take another crack at American GodsAnd I'm katievanblah on ONTD
I'm going to read A Century of November (it's set during WWI, which is a longtime obsession of mine, so I kind of have to). And if I don't like it, I'll read du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel, which has been on my list for years.E: Damn, The Long Home sounds good, too.
American Gods for me! It's been on my radar for a while now, but seeing that preview for the series got me SO pumped. Gillian Anderson <3
i'm glad im doing this bc now i'm forced to actually go get my library card bc i know not everything i will want to read will be on kindle unlimted. i have zero idea what i want to read though for january. i'm sundaymournin on ontd btw
lol I've been thinking about reading the Handmaid's Tale but very recently decided not to for random non-amazing reasons (seems like it might be a difficult read, not everyone loves it, whatever). But then I saw the Jan. challenge and I think I just need to suck it up b/c clearly it's just meant to be
ohhhh I think you're really gonna like that one Rachel. it scared the bejeezus out of me, but you're a seasoned horror reader so you'll probably be fine lol!
I had no idea they were doing another Murder on the Orient Express movie and looking at the casting I wish it stayed that way.I might re-read Captain Underpants. I haven't read that since they got banned at my elementary school, lol. Or maybe Annihilation because I need some scary stuf.
(also I'm ~stillglows on lj)
I've had Big Little Lies on my TBR shelf for a long time so I think I'm going to start with that. The Zookeeper's Wife looks good too.
This is my first time using my Goodreads in forever. On ONTD I'm catd94.I might read The Handmaiden's Tale or American Gods for January. I think I've read some of American Gods, but I know I've never finished it.
I'm going to read Annihilation for January! My sister told me to do this challenge, we share a username on LJ (though she's way more active than me) --> tablesandfables
A Monster Calls is sooo good. I cried a lot reading it!
Also, the illustrations are gorgeous so I'd definitely recommend the physical copy over the ebook!

I'm gonna read The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. I started it a while back and then things happened and I just forgot about it, but with the movie coming out I might as well finish it!

Agreed! you'd be missing SO MUCH with A Monster Calls if you get the text-only. you need to get/borrow an illustrated copy. it's so gorgeous!

I think i'll read "A Monster Calls" for my January part in the challenge :)
So how do the discussions for this go? Will we start a thread about our book and other people reading that book (or who have already read it) can join that thread? Are there any requirements/standards for keeping the group updated on our progress?Sorry for all the questions, I've never done one of these before!
I'm thinking of reading The Zookeeper's Wife or Annihilation for this month. I was already reading a book about WWII so I'm kinda leaning towards The Zookeeper's Wife.
Lea wrote: "So which book are you guys picking? I think I'm gonna go with Big Little Lies. I might try and check out A Monster Calls - I've heard good things about the illustrated version.I also have The Circle on my to-read list (Emma Watson's going to star in the adaptation, lol). I'm not sure it's something I would ever want to watch as a movie, but it seems like it might be interesting as a book, if that makes sense.
I'm going to read Between Shades of Gray for January. I read a nonfiction book about the camps in Siberia, so this will work. This was the book that some people mistakenly bought instead of Fifty Shades of Grey. Luckily my library had it on Overdrive.(BTW, I'm fright_wig on ONTD.)
I'm more of a non-fiction person so was thinking of Hidden Figures... But Wonder has caught my eye.Slomover on ONTD!
I might go with Big Little Lies. If I finish it quickly, I'll grab Murder on the Orient Express. I'm currently reading The Stand and Dune and I have no idea why I decided to torture myself that way.Hi, I'm milesteller on ONTD/LJ
I really need to reread Infinity: The Nick Chronicles. Excited about the possibility of a film. But I think I'm going to read Break My Heart 1000 Times bc I know I'll never watch it if Bella Thorne is in it.
Lea wrote: "Is Station Eleven really being adapted this year though? I found news from last year about it being optioned, and nothing moreI don't think it's happening"
Hmm in that case maybe I should read hidden figures? The queue seems pretty long at my library. I'll put in for it and wonder and see what happens. Station eleven is available so that'll be a back up.
I'm going with IT by Stephen King. I remember speed reading it at uni and not much else - silks_and_docs
Eve wrote: "So how do the discussions for this go? Will we start a thread about our book and other people reading that book (or who have already read it) can join that thread? Are there any requirements/standa..."I like the idea of having a thread for books so folks can discuss. Idk if that'll be too many threads and too much work for the mods (who are already rockstars for taking this on), but if there's interest I think it's a great idea!
OK I take it back, I'm probably going to avoid the depressing Handmaid's Tale and go for either World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War which has >5,000 great reviews on Amazon or Infinity which intrigues me b/c it's a highly rated YA series by a famous paranormal romance author (Sherrilyn Kenyon)
Just FYI. I've read The Mountain Between Us. It's pretty predictable but the twist was a bit manipulative in trying to get the reader to cry (unsuccessful!). I'm hoping Kate Winslet and Idris Elba make the source material much more interesting and not so much Disaster Romance Hallmark movie of the week.
I think I'm going to go with Murder on the Orient Express because I bought it in hard copy in Vietnam and haven't read it yet!!
Jenn wrote: "OK I take it back, I'm probably going to avoid the depressing Handmaid's Tale and go for either World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War which has >5,000 great reviews on Amazon o..."World War Z is a different sort of book that people either love or hate. If you're into an epistolary-style zombie story then I'd say go for it!
