Ariane | 947 comments Thanks ladies! I feel like I have been buried for three months in there and I am coming back to the real world now;)
@Janice, take your time to appreciate them, they're as dense as the third one, but yes, read those books! Because so much is happening and it has nothing (or few) to do with the tv show...
@Cherie, yep, I am waiting with you now...;-)

I debated about reading them for the monthly challenge, but I want to read them together according to the recommended reading order. So that's 2200 pages, and I'm not quite ready to tackle that.

message 103: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments How about that! I finally killed a series. Only a trilogy, but I thought the books were pretty good. I may have marked them too high, but I enjoyed the stories. I read and listened to them all. Tailorstown byChristina McKenna The Misremembered Man, The Disenchanted Widow, and The Godforsaken Daughter. They were all narrated by different women. I think I liked the first one the best.

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments Good job, Cherie. I, on the other hand, have started more series.

message 105: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Seems like every book we read is a series any more. I guess that is where the money must be.
I picked up the first 5 Thursday Next books and a Wallander book at my library sale last week.

I went to the bookstore with my granddaughter last night. I wanted to see if they had First Grave on the Right and mixed up the author with the Sookie Stackhouse books until I finally stopped to look it up. I bought the Sarah Waters book for the buddy read.
I bought my granddaughter a book too, even though she was laughing at me!

message 106: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments I'm starting to be okay with only reading the first book in a series and then letting it go. I don't need to pressure myself to read all these series just because I've read the first book. I can concentrate on the series I really love.

That's how I've been going about them too.

I wish that I could get to that point. Anyone try those "bookshots"? It seems like a gimmick to me.

message 109: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments What is a bookshot?

message 110: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I had to look up bookshot too. I was inrigued. Looks like books which are all under 150 pages long. There might be a challenge in that Janice ;-) Some big authors like James Patterson has done some. They're just like novellas so I don't know why they have brought in a new term for them unless like Jannene says, it's a gimmick perhaps to get more people interested in the author so that they'll buy the full length books. Let's hope they don't become series too.

message 111: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Had to come see what was going on in this thread. I've started, sampled, or saved to my tbr list many series this year somewhat to my chagrin. But I'm also pretty much okay with just starting a series or sometimes even dabbling in it if I decide to. Rarely tho.

About "A Song of Ice and Fire," I'm with Janice about not being ready just yet to take on all those 2200 pages. I've followed the Game of Thrones t.v. series tho my interest has flagged as the series has progressed.

Cherie, it seems that, as you point out, series must be where the serious money is ; )

I loved recently read The Golem and the Djinni, and realized at book's end that there would no doubt be more books to follow. Seems solid for a trilogy. Will be interesting to see if the author and publisher opt to milk for more. Perhaps quite successfully.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I have quite a few books that length. Hmmmm....

message 113: by Laura (Lclwags) (new)

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments Every day I discover a new thread on here, my addiction is growing!
I've just started The Dresden Files. I read Storm Front after I found out James Marsters is the narrator. I'd also like to start The Dark Tower series. My husband owns all of the books, but I just haven't been able to get through the Gunslinger.
If Doors of Stone ever comes out, will it be considered an orphan?

message 114: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments I googled bookshots and it's created by James Patterson.

The Book of Life completed July 2017

I loved the first book and picked up the other two yesterday. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Jannene | 3124 comments I just killed the Harry Bosch series again. I do love Harry Bosch.

message 119: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well done Jannene!

I just started a new series. Groan. But it's worth it. I am nearly finished with The Last Wish which people have said is a short story collection. Strange way to start a series I thought. They are right in that there are about 6 seperate stories each which could be read by themselves but between each of these stories is an overall story which connects them all together. With each story you see the main character developing and you get a taste of what he's like, his abilities and the different types of monsters he encounters. I'm really liking the format and the Witcher generally. I own the whole series so just as well I like it. lol.

Jannene | 3124 comments Cherie wrote: "Way to go, Jannene! At least someone is managing to kill series, still. I just keep adding them."

I started 14 series this year but finished two of them. Sigh

message 126: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments I just finished Shadow of Night and realised this was my 7th doorstop of the year so even if I am not making a tremendous progress in my series, I kind of killed the biggest ones... a girl has to enjoy her baby steps here...

And well done Jannene! Are you planning on continuing all of the series you started?

You're right TJ - There's a second book slated for 2018!

I realized I killed off Ken Follett's Century Trilogy in the second half of last year - Fall of Giants, Winter of the World and Edge of Eternity.

I wonder what Janice is cooking up for the 2018 year-long challenge...these challenges have been great!

What did you think of Shadow of Night Ariane? I enjoyed the series and have a favorite of course :-)

message 129: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments Lilisa wrote: "What did you think of Shadow of Night Ariane? ..."

I really enjoyed it, much better than the first one in my opinion.
The first was a "meh" for me, I almost didn't want to continue the series, but then I had the books so I decided to give it a try and I really liked it, even if I don't like time travel stories...

What is your favorite Lilisa?

message 130: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2094 comments Congratulations to everyone that's killing off series! I have not killed off any this year, just keep adding them.
Glad to hear Shadow of Night is so good, I have a hold for it from my library, hope to start it soon.

message 134: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments I loved the Dublin Murder Squad series, Jannene.

I'm curious about why you marked some as "will not finish". Is it the number of books in the series, or that you didn't enjoy the first book?

message 140: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments Saar wrote: "I have so many series to kill that I don't even know where to start..."

I keep changing my mind about how I want to approach these series. I've read so many first-in-series, and have a whack more that I have purchased and are waiting to read. I look back over what I've completed in series this year, and they are all trilogies. Obviously, that's the easiest.

I just bought the last book in the Newsflesh trilogy, Blackout, and the second book in the Sorcery Ascendant trilogy, Blood of Innocents. I've got them both slated for August, or as soon as I can fit them in.

Maybe, if I start a series and I really like it, then I should binge read the rest right away.... good intentions. What do I do with the ones I've already started? Whatever happened to standalone books?

message 141: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny, Janice! I think I said that at one time too. I haven't added it to my series list yet, but I am binge reading The Gentlemen Bastard series. I am on book three. I didn't intend to binge read them, but I couldn't let Jean and Locke go after the first one. Then I read the second one and it was even better than the first. I haven't looked to see if there is a fourth out yet or not.

message 142: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments I really enjoyed Locke & Jean. I hope the next adventure is published soon!

message 143: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments So - #4 is not published yet, Janice? I have about 100 pages to go...

message 144: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's not published yet Cherie. I preordered it but it was cancelled as it was delayed. I don't think it has a date now. There is also a prequel in the making but again that has been delayed too.

message 145: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm planning to finish the Mistborn series this year. I finished the original trilogy of which i binge read back to back and I've read the 4th book which is the beginning of the next 3 focusing on a new set of characters although not strictly a trilogy. That's my aim for the year and to catch up with Demon Cycle ready for the new release but I'm just going to read series books as and when otherwise. I seem to be reading quite slowly at the moment plus trying to fit in work related non fiction reading too.

message 146: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60170 comments It was supposed to have been released in 2016, then they changed it to 2017. As Sarah mentioned, there doesn't seem to be a date now at all.

I don't know about the processes in the publishing world, but I would think that a book would have been submitted for publication before it was available for preorder. Strange.

message 147: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny. I finished a series I didn't have on my list and had no intention of reading back to back. Those Gentlemen Bastards sucked me right in! #1 was actually left over from my Geo challenge, I think, and I realized yesterday that I could use #3 for the July monthly challenge - which I had not even thought about much nor gophered for. Yeah, I'd go on vacation with Locke and Jean!

message 148: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'd have loved the ship journey with those guys in book 2!

message 149: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments I killed the Myron Bolitar series. That last book was superb!

message 150: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good for you, Jannene. I haven't read any Myron Bolitar.

I wonder how Carla is doing with the All Souls Trilogy?

I just finished another 1st-in-series book. It is a YA series called "Summoner". The Novice by Taran Matharu I think there are three books out so far. I did not add it to my list.
