Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Catch-22. It isn't what I thought. Heck I don't think I yet know what it is. Very enjoyable how about that. My best description is a war story when every character seems to be corporal Klinger from MASH. I have no idea where the story is taking me.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have just started rereading As Meat Loves Salt for the survey challenge. This is my favourite book so I am using it for that task.

message 203: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Conspiracy in Death last night. I'm going to give that series a rest for a while, at least until I acquire more books. I don't think I could binge read the whole series.

Next up is Fat Angie for the group themed read.

message 204: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I just started The Night Bird. It was actually a Kindle First book for January, but I'm just now getting around to starting it. I read the first chapter preview on amazon before I downloaded it last month and it is what sold me on the book. Two women stuck in a traffic jam on a bridge in San Francisco, one of the women has a phobia of bridges and is about to have a panic attack. Her friend manages to calm her down somewhat, but then the friend has some sort of psychotic break and flings herself off of the bridge. That intro sucked me in!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments I finished today Miracle in the Andes, and rated it 4 stars (3.75), and it is my third book for the All about me Challenge.
I am listening to 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is being a lot of fun, something I wasn't expecting to be honest.
I will be starting tomorrow A Man Called Ove that is my book club pick for February.

message 206: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good to know about 20000 leagues under the sea, I have it as a possibility for the challenge too but was kind of dreading it.

I hope you enjoy A man called Ove, I loved it!

message 207: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Peggy, I admit that the narrator of 20000 leagues is really good. I am listening to the only version in Spanish there is in Librivox. I you find it dense to read, try an audio version. I am not an audio book person, I get distracted easily, but listening it only while I cook and fold clothes I already reached chapter 12, or 49. Not bad. Each chapter is around 15 and 20 minutes.

message 208: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks for the tip Sandra :)

message 209: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Fat Angie on audiobook for my February themed read. Next up is a selection for the Survey challenge, Shadow and Bone.

I'm still slogging my way through the 1170 page A Storm of Swords. I don't think I'm even half way.

message 210: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments I'm doing a re-read of the Harry Potter series, but with audio this time. I just started listening to Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets. Jim Dale does an excellent job narrating. I haven't quite decided if I'm using it for the monthly mardi gras challenge or the yearly challenge yet.

message 211: by Dem (new)

Dem | 985 comments Finished and loved The Unseeing The Unseeing by Anna Mazzola
My review:www.goodreads.com/review/show/1875986307

This is my second 5 * star read this year and in 2016 I only had 5 books I rated 5 stars. So great start to my 2017 year of books. :-)

message 213: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Shadow and Bone this evening. I'm not sure I'll continue the trilogy. I have too many series to continue and this one is quite YA with the romantic interest. Still, if it crosses my path, I'll likely read it.

Next up on audiobook is Circle of Reign. It's also for the survey challenge, and likely a bit more mature of a high fantasy adventure.

message 214: by Joan (new)

Joan Has anyone read anything by Karpov Kinrade? If so what did you think, were the stories good?

message 215: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 340 comments Reading The Catcher in the Rye now.

message 216: by Lisa (last edited Feb 08, 2017 08:42AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished my reread of As Meat Loves Salt for the survey challenge. It was as enjoyable and intense as ever and I don't think I will ever tire of it.

Next up is Temeraire, a book I am very excited to finally read. It is also for the survey challenge.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Working through Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ proving to be a slow read. Not bad though. Is growing on me but will remain a slow read it's just the writing style and is from 1883 or something like that. Maybe older

I remember reading it in High School. My mom had a paperback copy that was about an inch and a half thick. It took me forever! I do not think I ever realized that it was published in 1880.

Sounds interesting & Wikipedia says it was a 19th century best seller.

If you participated in the discussion about What's Eating Gilbert Grape please check and edit your posts for spoilers. If you replied to another post, please edit quoted bit in your post as well. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I joined a book discussion hosted by Karpov Kinrade. The book Negroland: A Memoiris really interesting, but not one of theirs.

message 222: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I've decided that I'm going to not finish Circle of Reign.

Before I started reading it, I noticed that the author had a review that stated that after he had first published the book, another author, David Farlane, took him under his wing and helped him rewrite the story. I have the original edition. In order to obtain the new edition, I would have to return it to Audible for a $5.95 coupon, and then buy the new edition at the full price (or use a credit). I'm not prepared to do that.

At first, I was enjoying the story, but it is evident that this is a first book effort, badly in need of the rewrite it subsequently received.

I will start Hard Magic on audiobook tomorrow.

I hope the next book works out better and it's too bad Audible doesn't offer a better exchange.

message 224: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I wonder if they consider it two different books. I was thinking about a couple of Stephen King's books - The Gunslinger and The Stand that were both revised and then republished. Those were similar situations - treated as if they were different books.

message 225: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've started Charms for the Easy Life for the year long challenge. I'm also still reading What Is the What which I'm really enjoying, but is taking me forever for some reason. And I need to switch to something lighter every now and then.

Jake Newman | 91 comments I am getting pretty far into Harry Potter book no. 2

message 227: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Collapsing Empire which was great. I've counted it for the all about me challenge. Now on to a chunkster with Wizard and Glass also for the yearly challenge. I did start it last year but i couldn't face the size of it. This is a dead tree book and it needs to leave my boat asap to free up some space.

message 228: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Sarah - Are you planning to read The Wind Through the Keyhole? It's #4.5 in the series. I've owned it and had it on my TBR since it was published in 2012. I hope I remember enough of the series to read it without a re-read.

message 229: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Hi Jake! Welcome to our group. I really enjoyed the Harry Potter series. I also enjoyed the movies.

message 230: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have put Temeraire on hold for the time being. I just don't think I'm in the mood for it at this moment in time. I will give it another try at some point, when I feel more in the mood for some dragon action :)

Next up for me is Roseblood for the monthly challenge.

Welcome to YLTO, Jake!

message 232: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome Jake!

@Kristie - I'll read the novella at some point but I'm tempted to come back to it after I've read the main books. After all, it is the most recent book of them all. I need to read the books so I can watch the tv series which is coming out this year.

message 233: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19223 comments Oh, I see, Sarah. I think it's kind of a side story anyway. If I recall it's background on Roland.

message 234: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished Hillbilly Elegy A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance which I thought was an eye opener especially for people who have not lived around hillbillies or the poor. Personally the author bored me after awhile…but it is good for people to hear about his story.

I really liked Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly about 3 different women, one a NY socialite, one a German doctor, and the other a young Polish girl. It tells the story of how their lives collide during WWII and it is based on true events.

I am almost finished with Evicted Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond which I think is a very good book. It shows how the poor are severely taken advantage of and how some of their landlords treat them. It is a study on two different landlords and a some of their tenants. It's sad how some poor will never dig their way out of extreme poverty.

For fun I am reading Daughters of the Bride by Susan Mallery I always enjoy her sweet romances for an easy read.

This weekend I will also finish Hidden Figures The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly which I put aside for awhile. I love the idea of the story but I got stuck with all the names and history of some people who are not "part" of the story. I hear it gets better so I am looking forward to that.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finally finished A Storm of Swords. That 1170 page monster was more like reading 3 books. I'll take a big long break before I pick up the next book in that series.

I started Eleventh Grave in Moonlight for my hot off the press challenge.

Yay, Janice! Was it worth the time spent on it?

message 239: by Lisa (last edited Feb 12, 2017 10:49AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have abandoned Roseblood. I read the first few chapters but it wasn't working for me at all. I don't think I will try reading it again at some point in the future either.

I am going to give A Gentleman in Moscow a try instead. This will also count for my survey challenge.

message 240: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's how I feel about the Outlander series Janice. I think I read the first 3 in a year but with the later ones it feels like reading one will easily keep me away from the next one for at least a year.

The problem with these chunksters is that they take up so much time that I feel like I'm not accomplishing anything. I'll probably watch Season 3 on DVD before I tackle book 4.

message 243: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I like to leave gaps between series books. But i used to read them bqck to back at one point. I actually read the whole song of ice and fire series back to back. I was in Westeros nearly 6 months. Lol. Just finished season 6 of the tv show. And it has renewed my interest in the characters and the world and made me realise how much I'd forgotten. Makes me want to reread the series.

Mariab | 3059 comments Sarah wrote: "I like to leave gaps between series books. But i used to read them bqck to back at one point. I actually read the whole song of ice and fire series back to back. I was in Westeros nearly 6 months. ..."

Nothing put me more out of reading mood as a serie which is scattered (one could say dispelled) along the years. I need to read the whole story at once. Hence I cannot stand those books which are thought as a solid story and then they will be "elongated" in the most stilted manner.

message 245: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I was looking at the wiki page for the books. It also includes the tv shows but the priority is the books. Books 4 and 5 are set in the same time period. A Feast for Crows follows a group of characters. Then the next book backs up to the start of AFOC and follows another set of characters. Someone has gone to the effort of combining the two books into a chronological reading order. That's 2300 pages! OMG! But, I think I'm going to do it. I may read it piecemeal though.

message 246: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I read book 4 and 5 separate, in published order. You're right - they are set at the same time and sometimes the same thing happens just from a different character's perspective. I think Travis mentioned the combined reading order. If i do a reread, i will read them that way. Do let me know how you get on with it Janice when you get going on it.

message 247: by Lisa (last edited Feb 13, 2017 07:58AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am in a bit of a reading slump. I wasn't in the mood for Temeraire, Roseblood was awful and now I can't get into A Gentleman in Moscow (although I think it's my current mood and not the book that's the problem).

I think I am going to try out Brandon Sanderson and pick up The Final Empire. Hopefully that will help!

message 248: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Eleventh Grave in Moonlight. The series is beginning to wear a little thin for me.

I'm unsure what to read next. We're about to start a buddy read of The Teleportation Accident but my copy hasn't come in at the library yet. I'll wait and see what the day brings... and the library. Hehehe!
