Why won't she just resign? It's a thing with irish politicians, they never resign while the british ones do it at the drop of a hat :-9

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Ours are having to be taken to the High Court to make the resign at the moment.
"You're breaking the Constitution. You need to resign."
"Prove it!"
*High Court proves it*
*They resign after weeks of still being paid a salary*

Not all are like that, we've had 9 MPs and Senators since August shown to have broken the constitution, 2 who haven't. 2 resigned straight away, 4 resigned after months of ignoring it, 3 got kicked out by the High Court.

Sarah | 18550 comments So I've had tooth pain over the weekend. At the top back near my wisdom tooth. Hurting all the time so assume infection. No problem yesterday though weirdly. Now it's back again. But i also have a headache across my forehead so thinking perhaps it is a sinus infection. So do I go see the doctor or go so the dentist? How do I know which one it is?

Flip a coin. Actually the doctor. If it's infected the dentist won't be able to so anything until you're given an antibiotic

I missed this comment before.
Does it hurts if you press on the gum around the tooth. I guess if it is an infection you should feel pain. And the headache doesn't sound as related to a tooth infection. I agree the doctor sounds like your best bet.

I would say go to the doctor first, Sarah. Tooth infections can sometimes cause pain in the face but I would imagine it would be more in the cheek area rather than the forehead. I had a sinus infection a couple of years ago and I had a dreadful headache across my forehead. Does it hurt when you sniff through your nose, or do you get a pressure like feeling?

Sarah | 18550 comments Here the dentist can prescribe antibiotics for tooth infections. But of course I'd have to pay them for the examination whereas it would be free with the doctor. I think it's sinuses as i bent down earlier and it hurt. Suggests there is some fluid somewhere. No pain in nose, nose is clear. No gum pain. I get sinus pain occasionally with my allergies but I've not had anything like this. So, I got a phone call with the doctor and given the fact I only saw the dentist last week and my teeth were fine then, she thinks it's more likely my sinuses so I've got an appointment in the morning. So i need to manage through today with painkillers as I'm at work.

Thanks for the advice guys.

My sinus is acting up at the moment too sarah. i think its that kind of weather. I get back pressure in my ears with it which is very painful. here its cheaper to go to dentist for the antibiotic! Though antibiotics are not very effective of sinus infection. Do you use do nasal irrigation Sarah? I find that helps.

tomorrow i have to travel to travel to dublin for a routine check-up with god aka my neurologist :-O)

Now what I've recalled through the years and searched for is a book with a boat or magic boat that has a soda fountain on it I randomly opened book half way or so not kidding they we're just loading boat. Scanned about 4-5 pages and they were finding a soda fountain! It is the book!

sorry i saw this a bit late but when i had sinus issues last year. ibuprofen almost immediately did a world of good, i could not bend over or stand up without massive head pains (even getting off the sofa)

i normally just use paracetamol for pain medication if i need it but ibuprofen really sorted that out

message 4425: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Cody. Ibuprofen is my go to painkiller so when something hurts i need something even stronger. So I had that plus paracetamol at the same time. It sill wasn't great but it's gone for the moment now. Touch wood...

Touch wood here too. Knock on wood takes too long to say. And you're only invoking the faeries, you don't need to give them a headache.

Invoking the fairies? I've clearly never heard the full concept of touching wood. Is there more to this story?

I've also always heard knock on wood. Must be a USA thing?

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I've heard both - I believe we tend to do more knocking than touching here.

And "knock on wood" to wake your Guardian Angel if you need a big helping of luck!

I'm going over to the refugee lady I do language coaching with tonight. She's cooking an Eritrean (she's from Eritrea) meal for us. Looking forward to it!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Kristie wrote: "Invoking the fairies? I've clearly never heard the full concept of touching wood. Is there more to this story? ."

The reason it the saying came about, was that if you said something that you didn't want to happen, you wanted to invoke the luck of the faeries to keep you safe from harm. And as the faeries lived in the trees, so you touched a tree to invoke their protection. Touch wood. Other thoughts is to distract the creatures that live in the wood that could do you harm.bring bad luck, I don't like that one as much. As we don't believe in them anymore, nor spend most our time in forests, it has now evolved into a saying to chase away bad luck by touching door frames, tables, etc or as is common in Aus, one's own head.

The stories behind superstitions are fascinating.

message 4438: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments Actually, in Spanish it's said "touch wood without legs", so tables or chairs wouldn't work.

About the same annoyingly. I went to see the doctor. She thinks it's probably my sinuses but as there is currently no sign of infection (temp, discharge etc.) she doesn't want to give me antibiotics. So I just need to continue with painkillers and hope it goes away. If it gets worse then I'm to go back. So all in all, a complete waste of time catching two buses at 7.30am for an appointment at 9am for a 3 minute appointment then 2 buses home all in the freezing cold. At least I haven't got work today.

message 4448: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments Anne - I like your mom's distinction for touch and knock.

Rusalka - Thanks for the background. I had never heard the reason behind the saying before. That's interesting.

Sandra - Also, interesting that in Spanish they specify without legs. Makes it more difficult to "cheat" by just touching a table or chair.

Sarah - I hate when I waste time going to a doctor only to be told to come back if it gets worse. Ugh. Hopefully, it clears up on its own.

Peggy - Enjoy your Eritrean meal! I'm going to have to look that up.

I also have the day off today. I mean technically, I have every day off right now because I'm not working, but I usually have 100 things to do. I intentionally postponed a few things to give myself a day off today. I plan to get some things done around the house.

message 4449: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Cody wrote: "that's awful, are there no doctors nearer to you?

As you're relatively new here, you may not have stumbled across the fact that I live on a boat. We move around so we can be living anywhere between Bristol and Hungerford at any given time throughout the year. I am registered at a doctors surgery that is roughly half way between the two of those places. Sometimes I can just walk to the doctors surgery whilst other times it's a much longer commute. I rely on public transport when my partner is at work hence the 1 1/2 hr journey to the doctors today. If I had a car, it would have taken me 20 minutes. Frustrating but it's just something I have to put up with if I want to live on a boat. Sure I can go to a doctors surgery closer as a temporary patient but it's a lot of hassle with the whole "no fixed abode" issue. My doctors are boater friendly so everything is simple and I'm already set up on the system.
