Kristie | 19321 comments Rusalka, wish we had planned a nice, relaxing day too, but we didn’t. We have two places to go today (it’s only 9am Christmas Day here), then a 12 hour drive home tomorrow. I’m already exhausted from the last few days. Maybe I can sleep in the car for a bit?

Merry Christmas!! 🎄

Sarah | 18550 comments Happy Christmas. I'm nursing a hangover. We only went to the pub for 1 drink. Didn't get to brd until gone 2am. But a hearty christmas roast has done the trick. Hope everyone is enjoying their day.

Sarah | 18550 comments Xmas day was a good one. Saw family, ate lots of food, didn't touch any alcohol. Played a couple of games of scrabble which has reignited my love of the game (so I've downloaded the app and have been playing it today). The weather was awful driving home and we didn't get back until gone midnight. It was cold in the boat so we had to get the fire going before going to bed so another late one for us. We had a lay in today, had a walk around the local town and just chilled out. The veggie meal I had planned for this evening is jot going to happen. It takes 2 hours of cooking plus prep time. I can't be arsed so I think we'll just eat crap and I'll do a roast tomorrow with a more sensible main dish.

sounds fun :) does the app let you check words before you enter them? i had that for a while but stopped playing because of the check function.

these may have just been my dads hardcore rules but if he challenged and a word was wrong i would lose my turn, the check function completely eliminated this to the point wher i beat a friend by 200 points one game and he narrowed it down to 50 in the next as he noticed me using two and three letter words a lot

oof to make sausage casserole now as i was so drunk yesterday, i got a pack of sausages out of the freezer instead of a beef joint

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I missed Christmas. Worked all day. Things just didn't go as planned. My family all went though.

message 4957: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm sorry that you had to work through Christmas, Travis. Bummer.

It was just my dad and me for Christmas. We had a lovely quiet day. He made his famous "fluffy pancakes" for breakfast with chokecherry syrup that he made this summer. We played a few games of crib, and then had a tasty turkey dinner. He caught the bus home early this morning. It's so quiet here right now.

Paul Just landed in Scotland for a pre new years trip

message 4959: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments A shame you had to work Travis.

Re. Scrabble app. There are settings so you can turn off the teacher. There is a dictionary attached. You pit the letters down and hit play. If the words are good, they get played but if it isn't a word, you get to take them up and put new ones down. Hope that makes sense.

Family time - nice 😊

We're heading west to Mayo tomorrow for my cousins wedding. Looking forward to the few days away but feeling a bit guilty about leaving the invalids to cope without us! We'll be back on Sunday hopefully but the forecast is not the best -lot of ice and snow on the way.

Paul Fun.Last wedding I was at was in Mayo. A halloween Harry Potter themed wedding. Weather is looking iffy but dont feel too guilty as you and Pete have earned the break

Kristie | 19321 comments Vacations sound fun! I loved Scotland, Travis. Hope you have a nice visit.

I've never been to Japan, Peggy. That sounds amazing. I can't wait to hear all about it.

I'm heading to Aruba in January. I can't wait. My best friend and her husband are going to be there the same time. It'll be great to spend some time with them.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I love Japan. Enjoy Peggy! The food is amazing. I suggest learning arigato and sorry (but that always seems complicated), and when in doubt, bow.

Arbua I had to google, but see it's one of the other Dutch Caribbean islands. I had a friend who did a year volunteering in conservation work Boniare, and loved it.

We were going to have a year off international travel but Lexx's sister is turning 50 and has had us saving up for 10 years to go on holiday with her. But last year she said she just wanted to go down the coast, so we wrote it off. But on Christmas, she's decided that Vietnam or a Pacific island is on the cards... I can't keep up.

message 4986: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I had not planned to work all day Margo but things happen.

Woke up to -33f or -36C if you like. Now I went out and checked the barn and all the water at 3 am by 5 am my house was froze. This never happens. I still haven't found where it is froze up. Every where I take it apart it's water not ice. One more spot to check tomorrow. I'm wondering if the heat tape isn't working properly or if it was so cold that wasn't enough. The highest temperature for the next 10 days is 10f or -12C. That's the warmest day several days have a high around -6F or -21C and since those are our high temps you don't want to ask about the lows. Basically nothing is working properly at this point. Just too cold. Now I'm going to go attempt to take a shower using a hose in the barn. It has hot and cold hooked to it I'll admit I'm not man enough to take a full cold shower at least in this weather

message 4987: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Oh look we woke up to 10°F lower temp than the current lowest temp set in 1993. So exciting breaking low temps with lower temps. Not

message 4989: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Japan sounds awesome. As does Aruba.

You had me shivering Travis just at the thought of having a shower in the barn even with hot water.

Well my partner has some kind of bug thing. It's his third day of having a temperature. I really don't want to catch it. We were both really ill last Christmas so it was nice to actually have a Christmas this year. Starting to think all the Christmas parties beforehand are a bad idea as everyone turns up with the lurgy and spreads it around.

@Sarah, I hope your partner gets better soon, and you do not catch the bug. :/

@Travis, I am sorry the cold is doing things so complicated for you. I was reading yesterday about a few records for this arctic current. It seems it is the coldest, for the longest period, and in the widest area since 1956. Yesterday we woke up to 5F/-15C, and today 10F/-12C, but of course it is always colder where you are. Reasonably, since you are 5 hours north from us.

message 4992: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think I read for new years or new years Eve the only place in continental US that supposed to break 50°f is Florida. It's just cold everywhere

Saar The Book owl | 2653 comments I've just seen in the news that in Michigan it really snows a lot, more than they're used too. Here, in Belgium, it's day 2 of the storm and the temperatures are low and then they are up again, but the much for a normal winter.

message 4995: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I cannot even imagine that cold, let alone the top temp being that. Hope you get the pipe situation worked out, Travis. That sounds unbearable.

message 4997: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments After a couple of mornings we had "improved" and woke up at 15F/-8C, we are again at 5F/-15C. Travis, how are things going for you up there?

Rusalka, Happy New Year! You are the first one! Comment from the future and let us know how 2018 looks like!

message 4998: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 31, 2017 07:12AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments The temperature the last few days has been -35C (-31F). Each day, the forecast predicted that the next day would be warmer. They lied. As of this morning, the forecast for tomorrow is -2 and 0 on Tuesday. Sure would be nice, but I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up to -35 again tomorrow morning.

My car battery died yesterday and I had to replace it. That's the last time I'm going to the dealership. Since when does it cost $360 to replace a battery? I could have gone to Canadian Tire and gotten a new battery for $135 and had a friend swap it out for nothing. They wanted to test the battery first to the tune of $80! Seriously? Nah, the battery is 4 years old, just replace it.

I sure hope the car cranks over this morning, or I'll be real cranky!

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm sitting in my recliner reading the new posts and Cleo was on the arm beside me. Suddenly, she sat up and looked over my shoulder with a worried look on her face. I turned to look and didn't see anything. She was still staring. I petted her and asked, "What's there? A wee ghostie?" Just then, there was a rattling noise like something fell in the basement. Cleo has gone to investigate.

message 5000: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes it's been in the news here how cold it is in the US. Saw a pic of a frozen Niagara Falls earlier and a shark that had frozen to death. I cannot comprehend the temperature s you're having either. I think I need to come there one winter to experience it.
