Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Happy New Year everyone! Hope you had/have a glorious night either relaxing or partying.

We went next door for a drink at 7pm, which escalated unexpectedly to still drinking at 3am and now feeling sorry for ourselves at 2pm. So much for a quiet night!

Kristie | 19321 comments Haha, hope you have a relaxing day, Rusalka! Sounds like you had a fun night. Happy New Year!

It is still 2016 here! It is about 10:40pm. We just came back yesterday from visiting family out of state for the Christmas holiday and decided to have a quiet new year. My husband and I are in our jammies, hanging out on the couch, watching tv and drinking hot chocolate, just the two of us with our cat and dog.

message 4: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Happy New Year!! It will be 2016 here for 5 more hours :)

message 5: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Heh it was. It was just sitting around chatting, but well needed. The "problem" was that I made homemade limoncello, and we mixed it with bubbles and white wine. I was putting out the empties before, and thought, "oh 4 bottles of wine over 8 hours isn't much! Why do we feel so rubbish?"

And then I saw the remaining limoncello. About a bottle of vodka was consumed with the wine. Dangerously deceptive!

Ah well. A day of lounging around is not a bad thing.

Happy (almost) New Year everyone. Twenty minutes to go .......

message 8: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It's 10.30am here now. I'm feeling okay, didn't drink much but going to bed late always makes me feel rubbish the day after.

I thought I'd be in bed half an hour after midnight, but when we went out to see the fireworks the neighbours also came out and asked if we wanted to come over for some bubbles. So we went and there were also 2 other people from our street whom we never met, and we stayed until 2.30am. We were the first ones to leave and the others were all 65+ people ;-)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not one for resolutions but for this year I'd really like to put a huge dent in my backlog and avoid book sales. Book sales are good but I feel they are dictating my reading. I'd like to get to a point of owning only about 5 unread books so I can truly read what I want when I want. I probably can't actually get through the backlog in 1 year. Only put a small dent in it last year. But last year I pretty much read any books I bought when I bought them so I didn't add to the backlog either.

message 13: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Happy New Year to you all!! We spend NYE nights with the kids playing games and just having some time together. I prefer a quiet night these days! I hope we all have an incredible reading year with lots of good things happening to us all. :)

That is so funny, Peggy!

I didn't drink too much, but went to bed late, and get up before 7. It seems my kids' resolution is again to get up early, even if it is weekend and New Year's Day. o.O

I need to desperately work on my owned books too. I am finding more recently that the list of books on my kindle is actually far more appealing than the ones i could buy on amazon at the moment. I've been struggling to find books i want to buy (except a recent flurry). That's a good thing.

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Happy new year again. I know i said it already in the last thread but seeing as we have a nice shiny spangly new one, I'll say it again.

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments That sounds delicious, Rusalka!

Good luck with your resolution, Travis. Avoiding the sales may be tough.

message 18: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4549 comments Happy New Year everyone. It was a quiet night. Our usual routine for New Year's Eve is various horderves (hubby-made), champagne, and the Twilight Zone marathon until the ball dropping in Time Square, then back to TZ. This has been going on for years. I think it started about 25 years ago when the kids lived at home. And there are some I don't remember ever seeing. Like the one that's on now.
We're such an adventurous couple.
Today it's all football, with maybe a Hitchcock movie thrown in. I'm in the running for a cash prize in the football pool, so I'm hoping for a good start to the year.

message 19: by Stephanie (new)

We spent our New Years at home with our pup! Blake was all nice and snuggled on my lap :)

I need to do that as well. I've already picked up two new books from Kindle daily sales. One of those books ended up being a whispersync deal. I'm not making a good start, am I?

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60072 comments So I logged on this morning with great plans of organizing my 2017 reads/threads/plans, only to be thwarted by Goodreads unstable site. There are multiple errors that are making this a rather tedious exercise.

It's now 12:00 p.m. and I'm still in my jammies. I had planned on taking down my Christmas tree today, but I'm reluctant to because I am so enjoying the lights on it. Good grief!

Oh, my grandson turns 18 today! He's officially an adult now. I'm rather shocked and yet very proud to have an adult grandchild.

message 22: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Happy New Year, all. My backlog is seriously out of control. My husband and I check the Kindle Daily Deals every day. It is so easy to justify spending $1.99 for a book that I would like to read. And we sometimes pick up great deals in used book stores. And anything my husband buys is available to me, too. So recently I went through my library and made a list of books I own but haven't read. I now have a list of 33 books, and I seriously doubt that it is complete. Too many books, too little time.

message 23: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Congrats with your grandson Janice!

I also have problems with the website, and a little with the app too.

message 24: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh, and tradition here is to leave it until the 6th (no idea what that day is in english, i'll look it up), so I suggest you enjoy the lights a bit longer and take it down friday or saturday, like me!

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yep GR clearly can't keep up with us all setting our yearly challenges. It's been annoying the hell out of me today.

message 26: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Happy birthday to your grandson, Janice!!

We took our tree down the day after Christmas. Mostly because the amount of fur that had collected around it was crazy haha!

The joys of having wood flooring and a dog that sheds :) I wouldn't trade it for the world though ❤

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60072 comments Thanks, Peggy. He's a wonderful young man.

Apparently Goodreads staff are working on a solution.

message 29: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments GR has been irritating me today too. It must still be in festive holiday mode!

message 30: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments I also had problems with GR today, but now is working well again. I had the same thought as Sarah. Probably 2017 Reading Challenge are to blame.

message 31: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Yeah I went to bed last night as GR kept on dying. Which is a good thing, as I need to change my sleep patterns from 4am to 1pm by tomorrow back to up at 8am. Urgh. I so do not want to go back to work.

I'm with you Travis. My reasoning though is I have far too many unread books, and not enough shelves.

Christmas decorations "should" stay up until the 6th Jan, which is the 12th Day of Christmas, and Epiphany. But I have taken down one of my two strings of tinsel already. The book wreath is still on my door, to which one of my old housemates turned up the other day for dinner and remarked loudly on the doorstep before opening the door "I like their balls!!" much to ours and our neighbours amusement.

Happy birthday to your grandson Janice! It's a bit of an accomplishment when they get to adulthood.

message 39: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60072 comments So much for enjoying the lights on my Christmas tree. When I looked up last night, the top half of the tree was dark. I tried fiddling with them but nothing makes sense. Something is telling me it's time to take down Christmas. I bought a new string of lights on sale, all ready for next year.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Half of our boat lights stopped working a few days before new year. We changed the batteries on them and they've been working since. I'm guessing yours aren't battery ones though Janice. I guess we'll need to take them down at some point. I kind of like them though.

It's all supposedly back to work today. I unfortunately have not. Whilst I've been getting better, I'm still not 100%. Walking and physical activity still making my chest hurt. I have antibiotics left for today but I might have to go back to the doctors tomorrow. Could really do without being ill now.

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments My new year hasn't started out as awesome as planned. I had a migraine New Year's Eve through yesterday and then my clothes dryer decided that it doesn't like drying clothes anymore. Fortunately, the migraine has passed and I have a little time today to catch up on some reading. And apparently I won't need to stop to switch laundry loads while I'm at it.

message 42: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments Sarah - Sorry your illness is lingering. I'm sure you're chest muscles will be sore for a while. Hopefully, you get a good report from the doctor and will good as new soon.

My situation may be that there is a burnt out bulb. But when I put the tree up, I noticed that one bulb was dark but it didn't affect the whole string. When the top half went out, I pulled a bulb out from the bottom and the whole tree went dark. I replaced it with a bulb from the top and the bottom re-lit except for that bulb. Bizarre. I figure an expense of $15.00 was far better than spending hours trying to figure out what was going on.

I love the little fairy lights. If I had a boat like yours, I'd probably put them up and leave them up year round.

I would definitely go back to the doctor, Sarah. You may need another course of antibiotics. When I was younger I used to suffer from chest infections several times a year and often found that I needed two courses of antibiotics to fully clear them up. Also, as Kristie says, you will find that your chest will be sore for a while afterwards because of all the coughing, wheezing, etc.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Hope everyone's feeling better!

Clothes dryers, we had one at home when I was a kid and only were allowed to use it when it had rained for weeks on end (rarely), or your jeans were still damp and you needed them so you put them in for like 10 mins max. Do houses and apartments just not have washing lines?

Re: Christmas. This was just in the Guardian this morning. "Don’t be fooled, Christmas isn’t over yet – so keep on celebrating"
https://www.theguardian.com/commentis...

It explains the 12 days of Christmas/Epiphany thing more. And I like the general argument. We had a joke going around here that it was 3 days until Christmas, and only 4 until Hot Cross Buns were back in the shops. Everyone went ballistic when it turned out the major supermarket chains ACTUALLY had Hot Cross Buns for sale on Boxing Day. I mean, Easter isn't until mid April this year!!!

message 49: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments We had a clothes line (US version) when I was a kid, but we mostly used it for sheets and occasional clothes, weather permitting. We mostly used the dryer. We also had a clothes line when we went camping for towels, swimsuits and any other clothing that got wet. I haven't had one since I was a kid.

We have indoor drying racks for any delicate items that can't go into the dryer, but use the dryer for most things. I think most homes in the areas I have lived don't have clothes lines any more, though I still see them occasionally.

message 50: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments That's an interesting article, Rusalka. I like the idea of a twelfth night celebration. I think a lot of people are all partied out by then unfortunately. Maybe a cute little family tradition could be started though. :)

I think the stores go a little crazy with getting holiday decorations, treats, etc out earlier and earlier for the holidays every year. I refuse to prepare for a holiday until the one prior is completed. Let's give everyone time to enjoy the uniqueness of each holiday!
