Fair enough. Compared to the Australian pumpkins they are all air and pips and seeds and string, and nothing useful.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We're expecting 5-10 cm of snow overnight. I'm debating whether to walk to the train station tomorrow (normally takes 20-25 minutes) or take a bus (which is probably delayed for who knows how long). I don't want to cycle through snow or ice, but walking is no fun either and waiting for a delayed bus and missing my train is even less fun. I wonder if I can get bf to wake up early with me and drive me to the station ;-)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Heh good luck Peggy! Whatever you decide, think of me while you do it. The top here is 38C tomorrow (100F).

Maybe if we think of each other hard enough we can balance each other out.

message 255: by Tasha (new)

Tasha ugh, good luck Peggy. Either way sounds horrible. I hope bf will be nice and drive you! ;)

message 256: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks for the video KimeyDiann! I had my DNA tested last year and it was very interesting. So did my dad. I was 72% Great British, 8% Irish, 8% Western European, 4% Spanish/Portuguese, 3% Eastern European, 3% European Jewish, and 2% Italian/Greek. I expected the first three but not the rest.

We're due snow too apparently later today and over night. We have weather warnings in place. I doubt we'll see any here though. It's currently raining heavy so any snow we do get it bound to just melt straight away.

Seriously Rusalka, you have to rub it in? ;-)

Cool video! I had no idea you could have your DNA tested like that. Is it expensive? I talked about it with my mom recently because we think that my dad's side of the family may have some Asian or Black ancestors, but they cannot track it further than a few generations (second half of 19th century I think) and that's all Dutch as can be. But my dad is quite dark-skinned (people often think he's from Turkey or Morrocco), my aunt is also darker than the average Dutch person, and my cousin was born with a mongolian spot, which is apparently very common in certain races but not so common at all in western people.

I had no idea by the way that such specific information about background is visible from DNA. I can imagine that it distinguishes between western and eastern or caucasian and african american, but even great british and irish for example, wow!

Interesting. I find it easier to make myself warmer than colder.

Sarah | 18550 comments I think the dna test with www.ancestry.co.uk was £70 but they have offers occasionally. It gets linked to your family tree and it compares your dna to other users to find common ancestors allowing you to confirm existing research and to expand it further.

It is easier.

But I hate snow. And ice. And grey skies. And I love dresses and flip flops and bare feet and sun on my skin.

message 265: by Joan (new)

Joan I had both mine and my dog's DNA done. No surprises for mine but hers came back as a mix of chow, dachshund and poodle. She doesn't look like any of those and I'm still trying to figure out how a chow and dachshund get together.

I bet we don't get any snow either. I'm in an area of the UK that is forecast to get quite a bit but I reckon we won't see any. It's still raining heavily at the moment. What makes me laugh is several airlines operating out of Heathrow Airport have already cancelled flights in anticipation of snow yet it's not even certain they will get any. They are going to have some pretty unhappy customers if it turns out they cancelled flights for nothing!

message 267: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We also have fewer trains tomorrow as a precaution. Never heard of airlines doing that though.

message 268: by Joan (new)

Joan Here in the states the airlines became more conservative about risk after some debacles with people stuck on planes on the tarmac for hours & stranded in airports. I think they decided it was better to cancel in advance rather than try to sort the mess during a storm.
Even if you don't get snow in Amsterdam, storms in other cities means fewer flights to Amsterdam and so fewer planes for departures from Amsterdam.

I had my dog's DNA done too. He came back a total surprise: english coonhound (secondary), australian shepherd and chow. Well, chow wasn't a total surprise as he has black spots on his tongue.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments The weather has been crazy here. Last weekend it never got above freezing, but yesterday and today the temps have been in the low 70's f (low 20's c). I think mother nature is menopausal or something!

@Joan, that is quite a conundrum on your dog's dna results! I'm not quite sure how that trio would have came together.
I would really like to have one of my dogs in particular DNA tested. He has papers that say he is a Yorkshire Terrier, but he's about double the size they normally are and has weird partly curly and partly straight hair.

message 271: by Joan (new)

Joan Have you seen the cats with curly hair! I think they are called perms or something - I wonder what happened to their DNA.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I set my alarm earlier to walk to the station or take a bus. But, no snow!! Some other parts of the country got quite a bit, but not here. We might get some later today but I don't think it will be much.

Sounds similar to here, Peggy. Some parts of the country got quite a bit of snow, others got none. We got little more than a dusting where I am, although we were forecast to get loads. It's snowing a bit again now but I don't think it will amount to much either.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think I'm getting sick. I already had coughing and a sore throat yesterday but today it wasn't any worse so I was hoping it was one of those one-day things. But it seems to be getting worse now. I'll go home now (it's already 3.30pm anyway) and hopefully will feel better tomorrow. We were planning on going to a craft beer cafe with friends tomorrow evening for belated new year drinks, and I really want to go!

Sarah | 18550 comments I hope it doesn't develop in to a full on cold Peggy. Fingers crossed it's just a short lived thing. Keep warm!

message 282: by Joan (new)

Joan Peggy, sorry to hear that, be sure to keep your house or apartment well hydrated. When it gets cold and we have to turn on the heat here the dry air exacerbates colds and sore throats. if you don't have a humidifier try pans of clean water near your heating vents. My Mother-in-law recommends hot tea with ginger wine or hot buttered rum.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I was a bit too optimistic this morning. I've used up about 15 tissues in the last hour, my nose is red and hurts, and when I cough it's like my insides are coming up. The solution for my nose would be to just lie on my back but that's boring. I think I'll stay home tonight, don't feel like drinking beers anyway.

message 288: by Tasha (new)

Tasha oh no!

message 289: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments The hours you spent in bed made you feel better. Now you are on your feet, your body is getting tired. I guess staying in bed as much, and as warm, as possible is your best chance. And lots of water!

message 290: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19321 comments Feel better, Peggy!

My husband had to work out of the house yesterday and today and I didn't. So, I have had two quiet days at home to read. I've been enjoying my time catching up on my reading even if I've gotten nothing else done. I had a lot of books started, so it feels good to wrap up some of them. Sort of my own personal toppler. :)

I think staying home is the best option, Peggy. It sounds like what you need is rest and warmth.

Thanks for asking. I still have something pain in my ribs. I guess from straining the muscles whilst coughing. Infection gone i reckon and I've finished the antibiotics now. Still have a bit of a cough but that might just be my asthma. I start the swimming lessons next Friday. I'm excited :-)

message 299: by Roz (last edited Jan 14, 2017 12:57PM) (new)

Roz | 4549 comments I have very little faith in the dog DNA tests. A couple of years ago we had one done on our dog ( Latka) and it came back with a combination including corgi and Pekingese. Are they kidding? That's her trying to jump the fence.
It seems everyone is getting sick lately. The weather keeps flipping between unseasonable warm, to wet, to cold with snow. For everyone, not feeling their best, feel better soon.

message 300: by Joan (new)

Joan @Roz - she is certainly cute, but she doesn't look like a pekinese or corgi.
