I am currently reading The Girl in the Garden. The story is mostly interesting, but the writing style really bothers me. There is no dialogue in the book. Within the paragraphs there are parts that say someone said something to someone else, but no quotation marks. Because of this each page is just a big, long paragraph, which makes it difficult to read. My eyes are so tired!

I am also listening to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It's funny how things take on different meaning during your reading when you know more about the people and things that happen from a previous reading. When you know how something ends you notice a lot more. I'm really enjoying Jim Dale's narration.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris Behind Closed Doors as part of our buddy read. I cannot recommend this thriller enough. This is probably the best thriller I've read in over a year. Since I read so many thrillers, I don't get scared or chilled that often. But I am with this one! Plus I think about it for hours after I've put it down!

I've also been listening to Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers Strong Poison, the book where Lord Peter meets his true love! I love Lord Peter and the audiobook is narrated by Ian Carmichael, the actor portrayed him in the 1970s tv show.

Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight **

Wasn't a fan.

Savanes | 2107 comments I seem to have a hard time reading lately. Nothing really grabs my attention.
I started The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy , read half of it and stopped. It was too slow going with a lot of side stories that didn't add to the story imo!
I read the first few pages of America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray and didn't get into it
And now I'm reading Heartless by Marissa Meyer , I read 20% and I'm still not into it. :(

Last book I enjoyed was My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella . It was not great litterature, was very predictable but they were a few laugh out loud moments! Very funny!

Oh that's too bad, Savanes. I hate when that happens. Right now I'm in a phase of 3 star books. I'm not sure if they're really 3 stars or if it's just me. I'm feeling a bit meh with them all.

I'm glad you liked My Not So Perfect Life. I have that one to read.

message 60: by Savanes (new)

Savanes | 2107 comments I don't like that kind of phase either Kristie!

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments For class I'm currently reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and I'm on chapter 16. So far I feel so bad for his creation. I've read this before but I guess I was younger and the emotional aspect didn't effect me as much.

I'm currently going back to finish The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer on audio. I started this around Christmas but just hadn't gotten into it. Around disc 5 I thought it got better than I had expected. I have a couple of discs left but I'm not disappointed. I wouldn't consider it anywhere near my favorite but not bad.

I have Frankenstein on my reread list for this year. I read the book in college and the ethical issues had such a HUGE impact on me. I remember being so bored with it when I first started reading and then I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite books of all time!! I ended up doing my English thesis on it, lol. I've been wanting to read it again for a long time to see how my feelings have changed now that I'm older.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished reading Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs yesterday. One of the best of the series, I think.

I am thinking about re-reading the whole series since (view spoiler)

Kirsten - Could you put that last bit in a spoiler? Some people may not have read that yet. Also, I love that series. I just picked up the newest release on Audible.

Canadian Jen Finished Winter Sky. A terrific and impactful one. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... 4.5*

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I just finished Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty and I loved it! Classic haunted house vibe with some interesting twists. It's only a short read so you don't have to wait too long to find some resolution!

I've just started World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks for my book club this month. I have to have it done in a few days so I'm hoping it won't take too long. Zombie books aren't typically my thing so we will see how it goes.

message 69: by Tracy (last edited Mar 28, 2017 04:21PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) I went shopping again today LOL...

about to start The Sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian , and then Beauty and the Beast Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly

Also got a brand new shrink wrapped copy of S. by J.J. Abrams , curious to see what the fuss is about?

message 70: by Paula (new)

Paula | 35 comments I just finished "My Grandmother Asked me to tell you she's sorry" written by Fredrik Backman (author of A Man Called Ove, excellent book).
The story is written from 7 year old girl, Elsa who is exceptionally smart. Her Granny (and only friend) is a retired doctor, age 77. Granny has concocted lots of fairy tales and kingdoms. When Granny dies, she starts Elsa off on a treasure hunt! I definitely recommend.

message 71: by Paula (new)

Paula | 35 comments I recently finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty.
Book is basically about three women's lives. It involves divorce, rape, and domestic violence that none of the ladies talk about. Really good book!

message 72: by Ohaninha (new)

Ohaninha | 2 comments I'm currently reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire <3

message 73: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've recently finished

The Face Of Deception by Iris Johansen: I didn't enjoy this much as I thought I would. I much prefer her Kendra Michaels series! (New one can't come out too soon!!)

The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers: Spy thriller written in the simpler time of circa 1902. No cell phones, no GPS, no Islamic fundamentalists, it's even pre-Soviet times! Great fun!!

Victim Six by Gregg Olsen: A solid find the serial killer thriller written by one of my favorite true crime authors. I still like his true crime better, but it is definitely a page-turner.

I'm listening to Treasure Island. Meh. I think the overall story is good, but I keep losing track of what's happening. I don't care for fight/battle scenes. I swear my eyes glaze over.

I'm also reading Before We Were Yours, which is really interesting.

message 75: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've recently finished:

Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas: Yay! Pandora's story was even better than I thought. The author has set this current series in the Victorian era, which I am really enjoying.

Delicious and Suspicious by Riley Adams: Great first in a series set in a Memphis BBQ. Great characters!

Lynn Renee | 17 comments Previously read Thankless in Death by J.D. Robb ✩✩✩✩✩ I love this series, just found that there are about three new ones that I have not read. So as usual my TBR list continues to grow even with my best efforts to reduce it.

Just read The Last Mile by David Baldacci ✩✩✩✩ I enjoyed this book about a man who after an accident remembers everything. This book is the second in a series the first one Memory Man by David Baldacci ✩✩✩✩

Also just read Redemption Road by John Hart ✩✩✩✩✩ This book was also another book that I enjoyed. Not a book that I would have found except for this group challenge. One reason that I have recently joined this group and one other is that the group challenges allow me to expand my reading experience. I am exposed to books that I have enjoyed reading but might not have had the opportunity to read them without the group challenges.

Connie Wisniewski | 110 comments There are so many wonderful books out there. I am 73 so I have a lot of reading to do.

message 79: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien for my 1001 Books challenge. While I think it is beautiful language, I think maybe to truly enjoy it I may have to be Irish, drunk, or both!

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I recently finished Z A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler and actually liked it. I wouldn't put it into my favorites category but I definitely found it entertaining. At some points I kept having to remind myself that it's a novel and not a memoir. After finishing the book I watched the first episode in the show. I never made it past that first episode.

I'm currently reading I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson for my online book club. I've read it once before and I remembered really enjoying it, but on this second go round I'm a bit iffy. Maybe it's because I've read more of this genre since I originally picked it up, or it could be that I'm listening to the audio this time, whereas before, I read it in print.

message 81: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen Just finished Stolen Beauty by Laurie Lico Albanese . The cover is as good as the story. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am currently reading The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, which is ok. I'm at 30% and I think it would be easily forgettable if I were to put it down.

I'm also reading I See You, which is just at the point where it is starting to get really interesting (22%). I want to know what is going on and how it will turn out.

I just returned Strange the Dreamer to the library. I was having difficulty focusing on it (It's me not the book) and figured I wouldn't have time to finish it before it was due back. I picked up an audio version to listen to next month instead.

While I was at the library, I got an email that Saga, Vol. 7 was ready for me to pick up (how convenient!), so now I have that one waiting for me. I can't wait to start it. But, I have to admit, I feel like I've forgotten a lot of what happened in the previous books. I felt like the series got a little funky there for a bit and some parts are a bit mushed up in my brain. Hopefully, the mushy part doesn't interfere with this story.

message 83: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I finally finished Heartless by Marissa Meyer . I'm solidly in the middle with this one. Maybe I was just too invested in the Lunar Chronicles and didn't have enough room left to digest this story, I don't know. I think my biggest mistake was listening to the audio version. This one has the same narrator as the Lunar Chronicle series and I loved her voice for that, but it made it too hard to separate Cath's story from Cinder/Cress/Scarlett...so I would suggest anyone who has listened to that series to stick with print for this stand alone.

I'm also about 15% into The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt and I'm not sure what I think yet. I can say that I can't remember ever reading a western, so that's new but I just don't know where the story is going. I'm going to give it about a 100 more pages before I make a decision on that one.

message 85: by Emily (new)

Emily (suave_reading) | 1 comments This year has been a fun year for books to start out with :)Me Before You has been one of my very favorites to read (I haven't seen the movie yet). Because a lot of my life has been surrounded by wonderful people from quadriplegics to paraplegics and everywhere in between. The sequel wasn't near as compelling, but was still worth the timeAfter You

Jane Eyre is fantastic, and it's been great to discover so many well known books for myself and develop my own ideas and representations about them like The Help and Sense and Sensibility

Canadian Jen Just finished Tiger Pelt. An outstanding review 4* Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 87: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I just finished My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout on audio. I wasn't used to the way the story was written, there isn't a traditional story line, but I was fascinated by the stories being told. I can't really put my finger on why I felt continually compelled to find out what was next but I did. I think this one could appeal to multiple genres. I gave it 4 stars but I plan on reading it again, probably in print, and my rating might go up if I can answer some of my own questions!

message 88: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 17 comments Just finished A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny ✩✩✩✩✩
I have read this entire series and loved every one. Each time I open one it is like going home. The Three Pines community is so interesting and quirky.

message 89: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 3 comments I just finished,The Boy on the Box, The Boy on the Wooden Boxby Leon Leyson. This could be the flip side of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This is a true story about a 10 year old Jewish boy in Poland when Germany invades. He tells his story of how he and his family lived and just tried to survive what they went through. He is, I believe, the youngest one on Schindler's List. Without Schindler and his list of factory workers Leon and his parents and two siblings would not have lived through the war.

Now I am reading a PIFM(Pick it for me) book, Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom, Inside Mrs. B.'s Classroom: Courage, Hope, and Learning on Chicago's South Side by Leslie Baldacci. Mrs. Baldacci used to be a journalist for the Chicago Sun Times. She decides to quit her job and enroll in a 2 year grad program that certified her as a teacher in an inner city school. So far I am reading about her time as a 7th grade teacher dealing with the kids who's lives are surrounded by poverty and crime. So far it is a good one.

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I just finished Hate List by Jennifer Brown Hate List by Jennifer Brown.
It was a mixed review for me. I did think the tough subject matter was handled respectfully, but I didn't think the parents reacted in a realistic way and it bothered me. I also listened on audio and didn't like the narrator (though that is a side comment and doesn't affect the star rating I gave it). The ending was good though. I am not sure if I would recommend it to anyone though.

Rachel Poynter (rachiesue) | 62 comments I just finished Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian for book club for this month and I enjoyed it. I had never read it before and although I won't be rereading it, I found it very heart warming and fast to read. I was good but not one that I will put at the top of my recommendation pile.

I also just finished Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon as a buddy read in that same book club. It went super quick, as I started it this morning, and I found it typical YA but enjoyable. Although I felt that the ending was predictable I kept liking what I was reading and would recommend it to someone who likes the theme of hope in that genre.

I am currently reading three books:

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) by Laini Taylor Strange the Dreamer 39% - I'm starting to enjoy this one, though to be honest not much has happened. It started out a bit meh for me, but I'm more engaged now.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale 27% - I'm not loving this one. Partly, it's the writing style. Well, I guess mostly it's the writing style. I feel like I'm at a part where it might get interesting, but I don't know. I'm just not feeling it. I'm hoping to finish before the end of the month for the monthly challenge. I think it's probably good that I have a fairly short time frame as a goal to push me to read it.

The Forever Summer by Jamie Brenner The Forever Summer 6% - I just started this one, but it has promise. I feel like I may be in a bit of a slump, where every book feels a bit meh right now, but I'm hopeful with this one already. I plan to read a bit more before bed.
