Recently finished two good reads:
The Runaway Children by Sandy Taylor. My spoiler free review (despite what it says at the beginning of the review, which I cannot figure out how to remove) can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... or sandysbookaday.wordpress.com https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...The second book was
Killman Creek by Rachel Caine. My spoiler free review can be found at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... or https://sandysbookaday.wordpress.com/...

I remember liking that book and wondered when I saw your comments why the title didn't bother me. So I went back to check my review. I didn't say so at the time, but now I think "all" the girls may refer to the versions of herself that she wished she could be. I included a quote in my review
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I may be trying to read too much into it, though. What I said was (including the quote):
She wishes vainly that she could have everything, have it all, all of whatever was good from the past and now. Like Russian dolls that have lots of dolls inside.
“That I could be all the versions of me, stacked inside one another, and find someone who would want them all. But that’s childhood. Before you realize that every step is a choice.”
Not a mystery, but a very good book.Who Asked You?
by Terry McMillanBetty Jean (BJ), an African American hotel employee, lives in a middle-class, mixed-race neighborhood in Los Angeles with her husband Lee David, who has Alzheimer's disease. BJ has to raise her grandsons while she deals with two troubled sisters; difficult children; and a variety of friends and neighbors. Well-written, funny, and entertaining. Highly recommended. 4 stars

After loving Aussie author Jane Harper's debut novel, The Dry, I was really looking forward to her second one, Force of Nature, which takes place in the wet.
3.5★ My review
I've finished Devlin the barber by Benjamin L. Farjeon (1888) which, if you like Victorian fiction, is quite good and actually rather creepy. Also Mr. Meeson's Will, by H. Rider Haggard (1888 as well) which is billed as suspense but isn't. It's fun though, pretty lightweight, and hinges on a woman who has a will tattooed on her back. Currently reading The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, by Fergus Hume (1886), Australian, after which I'll be watching the Australian tv miniseries based on the book. Last "history of mystery" book of this year -- A Study in Scarlet, by Arthur Conan Doyle (1886).
Finished The Beekeeper's Apprentice and am now zooming through a page turner from reliable David Baldacci, one of his earlier thrillers: Total Control
I finished this years ago, but recently re-read it.
Dance Hall of the Dead. Even better the second time around. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Scarred Woman
by Jussi Adler-OlsenDeparment Q, a cold case squad in Copenhagen, investigates the recent murder of an old woman that resembles the decade-old murder of a schoolteacher. I'm enjoying this series.
Just finished The Mistletoe Murder And Other Stories by P.D. James. Collection of four short stories set at Christmas, two of them featuring Dalgleish. Really enjoyed PD James in short story mode and now quite keen to get into reading Dalgleish - I didn't like him very much in his brief apearances in the Cordelia Grey stories ( the only other books of James I've read so far )
The twelve clues of Christmas features a young Dalgliesh and was just right to read on Christmas Eve.
Happy Holidays!
Struggling to catch up on my book reports.

I know that most of you must have read Don't Let Go by Harlan Coben when it came out in September but I only just got round to it after offering it to my father for Christmas. From the first clever sentence: "Daisy wore a clingy black dress with a neckline so deep it could tutor philosophy" I was hooked until the final twist. This book is a masterclass in crime writing, full of humanity.
Just finished the The Cornish Coast Murder by John Bude. A book written in 1935. A traditional murder mystery, lots of red herrings. Enjoyable read.
Anne wrote: "Daisy wore a clingy black dress with a neckline so deep it could tutor philosophy."That is excellent!

It's a pretty good series Shannon. Action packed.
Not a mystery, but some folks might be interested.
The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver SacksDr. Oliver Sacks was a physician, author, and professor of neurology who published several books about individuals with neurological problems. In this book Dr. Sacks discusses patients whose brain malfunctions cause a variety of 'maladies' including: a musician who lost the ability to see faces or recognize familiar objects; a former sailor who believed the year was permanently 1945; a man who thought his leg belonged to someone else; and other unusual afflictions.

That is a great book.

I recently finished Red Queen, which I thought would be an easy read. It was so depressing, and I have no desire to read the rest of the series. I almost did finish. Wish I had not wasted my time. I started the cozy mystery Dark Chocolate Demise and will begin Sourdough at the first of the year!
Nancy wrote: "Barbara wrote: "Not a mystery, but some folks might be interested.
[book:The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat a..."Yup, Nancy, a great book. Sacks had the knack of conveying the humanity of his cases: not mere curiosities
I finished I Let You Go before Christmas but haven't had time to write my review until now. In a nutshell, the book struck me as two different stories. I was reading along, barely able to maintain my interest and 'Pow!' it totally changed. The characters changed, the subject changed, even the plot changed.
Here is my review.
