The title also irked me Tom. But you have to admit that Both the Missing Girls doesn't have quite the same appeal to it as All the Missing Girls. 😉😉

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 4770 comments Recently finished two good reads:

I remember liking that book and wondered when I saw your comments why the title didn't bother me. So I went back to check my review. I didn't say so at the time, but now I think "all" the girls may refer to the versions of herself that she wished she could be. I included a quote in my review
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I may be trying to read too much into it, though. What I said was (including the quote):

She wishes vainly that she could have everything, have it all, all of whatever was good from the past and now. Like Russian dolls that have lots of dolls inside.

“That I could be all the versions of me, stacked inside one another, and find someone who would want them all. But that’s childhood. Before you realize that every step is a choice.”

Who Asked You? Who Asked You? by Terry McMillan by Terry McMillan

Betty Jean (BJ), an African American hotel employee, lives in a middle-class, mixed-race neighborhood in Los Angeles with her husband Lee David, who has Alzheimer's disease. BJ has to raise her grandsons while she deals with two troubled sisters; difficult children; and a variety of friends and neighbors. Well-written, funny, and entertaining. Highly recommended. 4 stars

I've finished Devlin the barber by Benjamin L. Farjeon (1888) which, if you like Victorian fiction, is quite good and actually rather creepy. Also Mr. Meeson's Will, by H. Rider Haggard (1888 as well) which is billed as suspense but isn't. It's fun though, pretty lightweight, and hinges on a woman who has a will tattooed on her back. Currently reading The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, by Fergus Hume (1886), Australian, after which I'll be watching the Australian tv miniseries based on the book. Last "history of mystery" book of this year -- A Study in Scarlet, by Arthur Conan Doyle (1886).

MissLemon | 255 comments Just finished The Mistletoe Murder And Other Stories by P.D. James. Collection of four short stories set at Christmas, two of them featuring Dalgleish.

Really enjoyed PD James in short story mode and now quite keen to get into reading Dalgleish - I didn't like him very much in his brief apearances in the Cordelia Grey stories ( the only other books of James I've read so far )

The twelve clues of Christmas features a young Dalgliesh and was just right to read on Christmas Eve.

Happy Holidays!

Anne Penketh | 6 comments I know that most of you must have read Don't Let Go by Harlan Coben when it came out in September but I only just got round to it after offering it to my father for Christmas. From the first clever sentence: "Daisy wore a clingy black dress with a neckline so deep it could tutor philosophy" I was hooked until the final twist. This book is a masterclass in crime writing, full of humanity.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks

Dr. Oliver Sacks was a physician, author, and professor of neurology who published several books about individuals with neurological problems. In this book Dr. Sacks discusses patients whose brain malfunctions cause a variety of 'maladies' including: a musician who lost the ability to see faces or recognize familiar objects; a former sailor who believed the year was permanently 1945; a man who thought his leg belonged to someone else; and other unusual afflictions.
