I think I've seen the movie, with Audrey Tautoe (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain). I think I enjoyed it... it was also sad I believe.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments And the Mountains Echoed And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini by Khaled Hosseini

A struggling Afghan family 'sells' their 3-old-daughter to a wealthy childless couple. This action starts a series of events that reverberate down through the generations, as related in a series of stories. Excellent book. 5 stars

message 1617: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina | 9 comments Finished Open Season (Joe Pickett, #1) by C.J. Box Open Season by C.J. Box and I don't recommend it unless you want to feel like an idiot or fall asleep quickly. The main character is too stupid to live and depressing, the mystery is so easy you know the who done it within the first few chapters. The author is also on a soapbox and is browbeat preaching to the reader the whole book. All the characters are flat and fake and you must suspend reality and logic beyond belief to make this even 1% believable. I have no idea how this won so much acclaim and awards let alone a whole series.

If you are looking for something good I suggest the other book I finished recently Right Behind You (Quincy & Rainie, #7) by Lisa Gardner Right Behind You by Lisa Gardner it is a very good mystery with plot twists that put you on edge. Granted you do solve the mystery before it's over but you are given hints throughout the book to figure it out just as the characters do. The characters are filled out and believable as well as relatable. The mystery is also believable which is nice for a change. I would read more books by this author.

message 1618: by Sean (new)

Sean Peters | 155 comments The Hanged Man (The Bone Field #2) by Simon Kernick

Firstly let me thank Net Galley, the publishers and the author Simon Kernick for an ARC copy of this book.

The Second book in Simon's Bone Field series and one that continues to build upon not only the success of the first but continues to develop the characters so that they become more real to the reader.

As a huge fan of Simon Kernick and his powerful returning characters, this was a fantastic continuation of the first great book and the return of two great characters in Ray Mason and Tina Boyd.

DI Ray Mason is looking for Hugh Manning who is on the run with information about the ruthless killers the Kellaways and Mason must find him first, so the race is on with the help of his police partner Dan Watts.

Mason back on the case after returning from suspension. It isn't long before he connects it all up with Cem Kalaman, murderous incestuous brother and sister Alastair and Lola Sheridan and the Bone Field murders. It isn't long before Ray Mason's controversial methods get him into trouble with his bosses. Tina Boyd is now in a relationship with Mason and is also investigating the case.

As a fan of Simon's work you know you will get and do get a story full of great twists, lots of sub plots some massive shocks, great pace, heart pounding situations and some very nasty characters new and old.

An edge of the seat that is at a rollercoaster pace. As always highly recommended.

Number Three... I am ready NOW !

Tessa Markham lost both her children, so it's a shock when she finds a 5-year-old boy in her kitchen - who calls her mummy. Tessa is soon accused of abducting the child and must clear her name. I found the 'mystery' easy to solve but the characters are interesting. 3 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments Y is for Yesterday Y is for Yesterday (Kinsey Millhone, #25) by Sue Grafton by Sue Grafton

Private investigator Kinsey Milhone deals with the aftermath of a cheating scandal at a pricey prep school and tries to find who's blackmailing a wealthy family with a disturbing sex tape. The book is repetitious, and cluttered with irrelevant scenes. Not up to Grafton's usual standards. 3 stars
