I thought this was a good 1st book in series. I liked Harper and Noah and the story was fast paced. I don't know why I wasn't more enthusiastic about it. It had all the components that make a winner for me, but something was a bit lacking. A good book, though, and I'd like to continue the series.

Katie Week 16: Owned Not Read Yet
Cold Reign
5/5/17
4 stars

This is one of my favorite series. Despite it's sort of slow start, it just keeps getting better and better. This book was no exception. It was fast paced, exciting, and left me wanting more. I wish it didn't take a year between books, but I can't wait to read the next one.

message 461: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Hmmm, what book did it start getting better at? I think I read the first two and wasn't hooked.

message 462: by Katie (new)

Katie Hm...a good question, Regina. I'm trying desperately to remember. I remember having to almost force myself through the first couple. I just wasn't into it. I think book 3 is where it started to get better for me and I was hooked by book 4/5.

Meghan comes home from school one day to find her brother acting weird. Her best friend, Robbie, tells her that he has been replaced by a changeling and that if she wants to rescue her brother, they must go to Faerie. In Faerie, Meghan discovers that her father is a Faerie King. She struggles to deal with how different Faerie is from what she is used to and keeps getting herself into trouble. It was fun seeing her find her feet and deal with the troubles in Faerie and I look forward to continuing the series.

Kimberly attends Blackhollow Academy- a school for magis. However, she struggles with elemental magic, as her magic focuses more on illusion. In order to graduate and potentially be accepted into a coven, ensuring her future, she must conjure a familiar- the epitome of elemental magic. Obviously she can't do this. So she decides to ask an earthbound elemental if they will be her familiar long enough to allow her to graduate. Enter Cormac Hunter, owner of a magic antiquity store and purveyor of magic items, who knows everyone in the magic world. Will Cormac help Kimberly in her quest? What is his secret? I enjoyed this story quite a bit though it could have used more world building; I was a bit lost in the beginning though bits of world building were dribbled out as the story went on. I will enjoy seeing what is next for Kimberly and how her decision at the end of the book impacts her future.

Alexia and Connall are adjusting to married life when one day all the supernaturals around the Thames in London turn mortal. They investigate and end up in Scotland with Conall's old pack. This was an entertaining story and I really get a kick out of Alexia's character. I look forward to what happens next, especially after the big news at the end of the book. I look forward to Connall eating crow.

Natalie | 549 comments Week 16: Owned Not Read Yet
Book: Radiance
Date Read: 5/13
Rating: 4/5

I always enjoy romance books that have a marriage in the beginning of the book and then have the two fall in love.

This book starts with the wedding of Ildiko, niece of the Gauri king, a human and Brishen Khaskem, prince of the Kai, a humanoid race with dark skin, different eyes, claws, and sharp teeth. While they don't seem to be that different, the two races are known to find the other repulsive to look at.

Before the wedding Brishen happens upon his betrothed and they talk without knowing who the other is and find that they get along, despite finding the other unattractive. For example:

"'Had you crawled out from under my bed when I was a child, I would have bludgeoned you to death with my father's mace.'"

But despite this, they find that they get along and enjoy each other's company. The book is slow at times, between court intrigue and them learning about each other and how they fit in each other's life, especially when it comes to food. I never knew potatoes to be so horrifying or pies to be so...alive. I look forward to continuing the series.

This is the first in the Lord Peter Wimsey mystery series. Peter is the second son of a duke and spends his time on his two hobbies: collecting rare books and solving crimes. His mother calls him to tell him that the architect repairing the local church roof had found a dead body in his bathtub and thought that Peter might be able to help him. Along the way, he gets involved in a missing financier case while helping his friend Inspector Charles Parker of the Scotland Yard. This book was written in classic British style- lots of talking, tea and minimal action and yet I enjoyed it a lot. The only thing I disliked about it is Peter's habit of spouting poetry in the middle of a conversation. I do plan to continue this series.

Ok. If this is steampunk then maybe it's not so bad. I feel like it may be on the periphery of steampunk, though, so maybe that's why it was better for me. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a really angst-free YA novel, which is rather rare, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.

Thank you for pushing me to read this book! I listened to the audio and read the ebook.
