Thank you! I'm actually very excited about this particular book because of the synopsis I read on the back of the cover. :)

Hey, sine you are a mod here, I have a doubt. What's the difference between the group read pick and the corresponding threads, and the life-time buddy read threads? :D I'm new to goodreads' discussions, so it's a bit confusing for me.

group reads are what IR readers select as the monthly read. one of the mod first put a thread for nominations where IR members nominate books and by 10th each month a poll is put up based on those nominations. Winner is read the next month.

corresponding threads are where two or more people pick one book to read together, they are termed as Buddy Reads and threads for those are mostly created in Cozy corner folder.

Life-time are where two or more people keep reading books and updating the thread by making a log mostly in first comment itself.

Hope this helps!

Yes, now I understand it a lot better, thank you!! :) Once the year starts, I will get used to how this all works :D

thank you :)

We usually send a notification when group read starts.
For BR, I usually see which of my friends have marked the book I read as toberead. ..and then message them asking whether they are interested in joining in. if they are then we create a thread in cozy reads folder.
I also check what others are reading and then join in if possible.

Any other suggestions?

Oh! I will check them, meanwhile, I read the first line of The Scarlet Pimpernel and loved it, I think I might consider it for this theme.

The line goes:
"A surging, seething, murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate."

2. The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket (finished)

I started with "Small Great Things" and really like the story and how it was panning out. But it was emotionally draining due to the theme of the book and how it is depicted. It's depressing even more to know that such form of intense hatred and racism is actually present even in the present day. So I put down the book after 124 pages as I felt exhausted mentally.

And took up book #6 of "The series of unfortunate events": The Ersatz Elevator. Even this book is all about dark and unfortunate incidents happening to 3 orphans, but it is a light read, humorously written. I was able to finish the book as it is very short. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series as this book has set the scene for widening of the plot which has remained limited, yet interesting until the end of 6 books.

Notes:
Started with reading and listening to The Martian at 00:00, as sleep continued to elude me.

I listened to the audiobook while on commute to work, while at work and while going back home. Mark watney is f###ed and it's fun to read his logs.

21:08 - I will probably stop reading 'The Martian' for the day and resume 'Small Great Things' and exhaust myself to sleep.

23:06: I stopped reading The Martian but haven't started on reading the other book yet. Sleep is not my friend, so I will probably start reading after a while. Browsing Goodreads seems to be becoming an addiction. Sigh!

00:57: I watched season 4 episode 1 of Sherlock, didn't feel like reading. Now I will listen to the The Martian and try to get some sleep.

01:35: Sleep eludes me. Oh well, I might as well go on an adventure along with The Hobbit, the wizard and the dwarves.

08:21: I slept off when thief Bilbo bagginsessss was able to escape Gollum. Will continue The Martian while on commute to work.

14:57: Work is boring and frustrating. My thoughts keep wandering to what Mark Watney must be doing on Mars right now and how the hobbit and dwarves are faring in their journey. It's still at least 3 hours before I run out of office. Sigh. But again, I am active on goodreads even at work. This surely is becoming an addiction. I don't know how to stop it.

00:00: Listening to The Martian. It's about to be over, but Watney is in for a f###ing scary ride.

16:44: Finished reading/listening to The Hobbit. Posted the review on goodreads. I plan to start The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas when I get home. This classic will take quite some time to complete, I assume.

I've not touched 'Small Great Things' again after the first sitting on January 2. The emotional drain I expect from that book is making me avoid it, perhaps. Sigh!

23:53: Completed The Death of Ivan Ilych in a couple of hours and wrote a review. It was emotionally draining, this short story. A morbid walkthrough of the life of a man who struggles to accept his deteriorating health and the imminent arrival of death. Sigh!

message 45: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Review of 'The Hobbit':

Started this year with a wonderful, jolly story about a hobbit who was afraid of adventure but was forcefully taken out on one. He is like us introverts who resist fun and go to extreme lengths to avoid it. But when we are forced our hands, we do quite enjoy it but never admit it out loud.

I remember this story well from my first read but not the characters or the finer details, so this re-read helped me enjoy those details again. I wrongly remembered that Gandalf will have a huge role to play in this book, surprised that he only makes 3-4 appearances.

Smaug is a bad-ass dragon. Well, at least in royal, majestic talk. His interactions with Bilbo Baggins were so fun to read, would have loved more of him in the book. :D Overall, this was a great adventure book and I thoroughly enjoyed Nicol Williamson's Audiobook version of The Hobbit. He does a wonderful job of enacting and modulating voices, I especially loved his takes on Gollum and Bilbo. Especially, the Gollum and Bilbo conversation, that whole scene was eerie and kinda spooky when listening to. I loved that, 5/5 for the audiobook.
