Yeah, they seem to hit more lately for me too. I was really positive and in charge for a few solid years there, then... I let rejections gauge my value, I think. Time to move on from that. (thinks positively... hope it lasts.)

We can do this thing! Write the awesomeness!

THAT's where I recognize him from. I actually recognized the book with the rat... he was in the event.

I need to scrub my brain and eyes out to pay more attention to my world. ;)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Alex, I agree. I think promotion is exhausting... but I don't see many sales unless I work hard promoting. So many books, only so many avenues to stand out.

I do enjoy my friends on GR and I feel bad when I go into hiatus and miss everyone's exciting news. The folks were are super shiny. They help me keep it rolling.

For me, I've also received quite a number of rejections on short stories I've submitted... and I'm being a little too emo about it. Time to re-write, lower my standards, or just set them aside for a while. I had one professionally betaed by six betas... to see if I could find a beta I really liked, and got some great and overwhelming comments. So, that's been exhausting too. (A few good betas found, though!)

But good luck with the promotions. I enjoy reading your posts on your process and what works/doesn't work.

Tessa Rose | 29 comments Hey, Nat -

I'm dabbling here, in preparation to making my own showcase thread ... and I love yours! I'm also a straight woman who writes gay sex scenes, and your thinky thinking pulled me in. I really didn't feel qualified to write gay sex ... my story puts straight people into a gay world in an attempt to create some empathy ... but there are a lot of gay characters, and you know, they gotta get some, too.

I'm getting better at it, I think.

message 156: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Thanks for the link. It is a bit uplifting. And some negative reviews my favorite authors get I downvote. I'm nefarious that way.

Yep, I am switching into writing mode again, taking a step away from marketing. Working on getting the next out in my series is probably the best marketing I could do right now!

I was shocked to discover we weren't friend yet. So, thank you for friending me back. :)

Tessa! Yay for like minds!

I do have some guy friends I have read over my sex scenes to see if they are super crazy. But all in all, I think as long as the 'feeling' is correct, you're mostly there. Don't shy away from it!

And welcome to SIA Showcases! Do you have any books out yet?

So that^ is supposed to be above my reply? Such a newbie ... Yes, I have one book out, which I'll shout about when I make my own thread. Working on second one ... it wants to be a series of four or five.

You can hit reply to someone's post and it will automatically italicize portions of it and say XXX wrote: or you can just type stuff, calling the person out so they know who it is. Some people write @Tessa or something like that so you know a reply is to you. :)

Congrats on the book and the unfolding series! I'm working on the third one in my series... excited to be working on it again.

Thanks for the cheers. I'm trying to get back into my 5 am writing schedule... I've not much time with my day job, so if I get up early before the distractions I usually get some words down. But lately....

I like that plan. When the billions fall, all will reap the rewards! Just need Opera to pick it up.

@Alex... I need a vacation too. Away from the daily grind. The daily grind is driving me to only watch television and read fluff.

Not that reading fluff is bad. I quite enjoy my fluff... but it's not getting me writing. Ah, the challenges of a modern life.

@Amie... cheerleaders in any form are useful. Maybe we need to make a SIA Dorrie stuffed animal that if you squeeze it is says "Write Write Write!"

message 176: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments I've read 21 books this year already. It's my 'comfort food' when I'm feeling not on. I watch a little TV, but I don't have cable/Netflix/etc so what I watch I get from the library, usually.

But I end up wanting to sit and read instead of writing. And lately when I read something good, I feel less inspired by it and more "I'll never be that good." Just in a rough place. I'll pull out of it! Hopefully soon. ;)

Yeah, I do that too, Jane... except I'm crazy enough to release it. lol

Nat - I need a vacay too! Let's go to the Bermuda Triangle and get lost! Maybe get picked up by sexy aliens who look like angelic anime characters who serve fruity cocktails and frozen mochas? Sound good?

Christina, when the floating millions drop on your thick skull, please think of me. I need a new car so badly. The bumper literally fell off and the A.C. died! No AC in summer in Florida is a scary, scary thing!

I shall have to try that. I also read stuff I've written in the past I'm proud of, but then I'm just reading some more. Writing something silly sounds somewhat therapeutic.

Yes to the Vacation! I'm really tired of snow, cold, and rain and the lack of sunshine. Hmm, sexay aliens. Hot anime characters. You've totally won me over on this trip of yours.

Sucks about the car!!! Try chewing gum. It worked for MacGuyver. (Seriously, unreliable transportation sucks.)

I want to go to Egypt!!!! I've traveled a bit and that's someplace I want to go. Someday.

I did London and Rome right after I'd read Da vinci Code and Angels and Demons and loved seeing all the sights in the book.

Yay! Vacay buddy! We'll get nosebleeds together and play in the sun. Hopefully, it'll be a less brutal sun than in S Florida! Believe me, I have plenty of sunshine where I am, but it's so bright and burning! I'm a vampire, though, so I'm extra sensitive. ;)

I've done the Inca Trail, a four day version (there are many trails you can hike) hiking to Machu Picchu. It was amazing. Most exhausting thing I've done. That elevation kicks you in the butt! I've done some Mexican ruins too. I love the history around each of these old cultures.

I hop you hit your LUCKY with your books soon so you can see all of these places.

Send me some sunshine!

We'll need a handkerchief or two for our nosebleeds. So, who do you want to join us on your vacay? Whose your current Hot Stuff anime character? (ignore the fact that they are probably all under age.) I actually don't think I have one and I'm very sad about that.

Ride that zombie! Dosie Do. I'll take some vids.

I just need a vacay pretty much anywhere! lol I'm taking a week off at the end of the month and going to Disney World for 3 nights. Yay! I'm a WDW addict and it's been 7 months since my last visit. I'm starting to get the shakes and singing "It's a Small World" uncontrollably at random. It's not pretty.

My fave anime hotties? Hak and Shin-ah from Yona of the Dawn, without a doubt.

Hak is the sexy "Thunder Beast" with a loyal heart of gold.

And Shin-Ah, the Blue Dragon, has such a heart-tugging back story... and those eyes!!!

I liked those characters from Yona too. All the guys were shiny shiny! (Reminded me a lot of Fushigi Yuugi.) Was there another season of Yona?? Reverse harems can be fun.

Legend of Arslan -- I have not watched that! Should I? Plot as well as character awesomeness?

I went to WDW 1nce and loved it. I want to visit once the new Avatar stuff is set up. I also hit Universal and went to Harry Potter World and was in heaven for stretch of time. I really liked WDW and could see becoming an addict to it. We stayed for a week!

The original Legend of Arislan (early 90s I think) was gorgeous animation, but stilted in plot and voice acting. The remake was not as purdy with the actual Arslan character seeming much younger. However, the plot is mega fleshed out and the entire thing is so much more epic and packs a punch. I highly recommend if you like epic historical fiction stuff. I love that kind of thing - much like Yona, but even more historical fiction. It cut off after one season though. I hate that!! I hope they do more.

Same thing with Yona - but I was so damn addicted that I started reading the manga, and OMG, it's just awesome. I like manga, but I am lazy and like anime. Also, they, ya know, move and stuff. :P

Never saw Fushigi Yuugi. It looks kinda more kiddie oriented though.

If I could live in an anime, I'd be happy. :P

Aww. I wanna see your kitty sleeping on your manuscript! I have one of mine sleeping on a flier for mine. lol They love paper. Somehow, it's so comfy.

message 200: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments I didn't fine Fushigi Yuugi any more kiddie than Yona, personally. The story lines were fairly similar. Woman needs to collect her harem to do a heroic thing.

I do think animation can hold more emotion if done right, but still... I zip through manga far more quickly than watching anime. Either way, I love the combo.
