Hmm... I want soft purple hair, iridescent gossamer wings, sparkly cheeks, and silver shoes. I think that about covers it. : D
But if there are already too many fairies, I'll gladly be an elf... but I'll miss the pretty wings. Hugs!

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Personal post and a little bit about me.

I am not a full time author. I work for the government forty hours a week and it's always a struggle to do the 'life' thing, work my job, and also work my second job: aka writing. I put about 60 hours a week into 'working'.

Someone the other day called it a hobby and I threw a shoe at his head. This much work isn't a hobby.

I wish I made enough income to quit the day job, but the insurance is rocking and you can't turn away from that. I think I made enough money to buy a Kitchen Aid and a Vitamix this year... I cherish my successes.

How are other authors doing it? Are you full time? Happily? Or you scrounging for a hour here, fifteen minutes there to write? Or have you found a good balance?

I know I will never be one of those gets 5+ books out a year type of authors, just no time, but I hope to still build an audience.

Here, use this next time ^_~

I'm a scrounger myself but always have something to write with one me (typically iPhone haha) and tend to sacrifice sleep for stuff I love.

Writing included.

Before September, I think, things suddenly got hectic at work for a couple of months (I'm in tax economics/law) and I had no time for anything fun, which included time for writing and the internet lol. Now, however, I'm a semi-student again for work and have much more free time. Ironically, having more time to write hasn't produced better results than when I was scrounging for time lol.

Thank you! I shall use this next time, and I'm sure, to positive effect.

I know lots of people put tons of time into hobbies, but if I want to make money off it, I think I'll call it my second job. Oooh, my writing career! That sounds sparkly.

I know what you mean. Often when my schedule is tightest, I get the most done, I'm more organized and the deadlines mean more.

Tax time is always rough for accountant types. One of my dear friends is an accountant, owns her own business, and during tax time, we give her meals and the like, just to take some of that stress off her.

Novelettes my good Nat, Novelettes! They are so much fun to write!

I only have 2 full books out, so we are tied.
:D

C.B. Archer | 502 comments Mod
Speaking about Novelettes, have you ever considered them Nat?

Christina gave me the idea to do some and it was such amazing advice that I am passing it on to you now! They can tie into your Wielder World series, either directly or indirectly. Backstories, side character expansion, or original people in the same world!

The best part of the novelettes is that they are promo dandies! (plus easier to give away than your big works)

message 75: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Actually, my two books out are novellas (~30,000 words each), then I do have a short story in the world (about 6000 words) and a follow up novel that is about 60,000 now, but will probably grow.

I had the idea of doing a 'radial' world, where I write a 'main' book introducing the world, people, major plot, then writing lots of novelette type stories in that world that aren't really in any order. That's kinda what you have, right?

I think a side story to give away for WW would be good, that includes the main characters and some smut. Maybe I'll work on that next year. :) Thanks! Good tip!

Probably for the best!

You should probably keep your thread clean!

You never know who will show up!
(Or put them on my thread)

Always best to keep things clean!

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Hope everyone had an awesome New Years. I'm back in the saddle and am building my 2017 To Read List. I am coming to you, fellow authors and dear fans, to help me add some great books. I prefer fantasy/sci-fi (though I enjoy mysteries and thrillers as well and am open to other genre) and very cool characters. Not so much into books with asshole main characters (I like my good guys to be good and my bad to stay on the opposite side).

So, please, Rec Me!
