Charity | 577 comments I'm in per the norm. The only problem is I only joined goodreads (and this wonderful group) in 2014...so I don't have a lot of variety in the year category. I'm thinking of doing the following so let me know if that's ok. I don't really have any other "lists" to draw years from I just dumped a whole ton of books in my TBR in 2014 when I joined.

Ace: 2014
2: 2014
3: 2014
4: 2014 - kept the same
5: 2015 - kept the same
6: 2016 - kept the same
7: 2015
8: 2015
9: 2015
10: 2016
Jack: 2016
Queen: 2016
King: 2014 - since I have so many from this year

Drew 12 cards 'PICK-A-SHELF':
P. 3 spades - Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh - Read 4/24/2017
I. Jack diamonds - The Yellow House by Patricia Falvey - Read 8/18/2017
C. 7 spades - Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift - Read 1/21/2018
K. 3 clubs - The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Read 2/10/2017
-. King hearts - End Game by Dale Brown - Read 2/5/2017
A. 9 spades - Clarissa, or, the History of a Young Lady by Samuel Richardson
-. 2 hearts - Retribution by Dale Brown - Read 2/16/2017
S. 3 hearts - Revolution by Dale Brown - Read 2/28/2017
H. Queen hearts - An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce Read 1/3/2017
E. 5 diamonds - Three of Hearts by W. Ferraro Read 5/24/2017
L. 9 clubs - Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock
F. 8 spades - The Charterhouse of Parma by Stendhal Read 12/20/2017

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments Charity, you have more variety in year than I do. I have only got 2 years to choose from.

message 54: by Cecile (new)

Cecile Grudzinski Haha that's what I did Charity. I joined in Nov 2014 and dumped something like 350 books onto my TBR fairly haphazardly I might add.

message 55: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments Cecile, 350 books is nothing. This year I have added over 1000 books. It is just so fun to see what others read and if it is good you just have to add it to your tbr

message 56: by Cecile (new)

Cecile Grudzinski I know, but that was 350 over a 4 or 5 week period.

And I think that's what we all do when we first joined GR ;)

I decided to count my book for this month's shelf, Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin for my free choice space. So I'm actually caught up for the time being (i.e., 1 out of 12).

I can already tell I'm going to regret this -- I couldn't help myself, and signed up for all 4 challenges we have going right now. If I start feeling too overwhelmed, I may decide not to keep going on all of them. But planning is almost as much fun as reading the books!

You could think of it as challenges having 3 phases - the planning, the reading, and the tracking. Planning might actually be my favorite of the three phases :)

You're absolutely right, Sue. And it's the tracking that I get tired of. I also require myself to wrote a GR review for every book I read, and I get tired of doing that and get behind on it, too.

message 84: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments I'm with you, Susan. I love the planning phase, but then get often stuck and/or overwhelmed on the reading/tracking phase. So many books, so little time!
At the beginning of every year I too require myself to write a review for each book I read, but then fail miserably in the attempt.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Planning your challenges' reads are definitely the BEST fun EVER lol

I'm totally addicted ;p

message 86: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments I love the planning phase too! It's fun to pick books.

For the tracking of what you have read I have noticed it is easier to make a thread where you list all challenges and which books you want to read for them, I did that here (it is in another group so I'm not sure if you will be able to see the page). It takes time to set up a thread like that, but it makes things easier later on. When you read a book you go to your challenge thread and use ctrl + f to search the page to see for which challenge(s) you used the book.

message 87: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Can't see your tracking thread, Lusie.

I personally use a worksheet though I also tried creating my own private group for my own use to track challenges but I find I like my worksheets better ;p

message 88: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments I used to do that too, Lusie, but I found it time-consuming in the end. I haven't signed up to many challnges this year (well... not so many as the past few years, at least), so I thought I'd just go to the appropriate post and edit it. I'll have to find another solution if this doesn't prove handy.

I'm using a separate group to monitor my OLD challenges that I am still working on. However, I prefer my Excel spreadsheet workbooks for my different groups and their challenges.

message 91: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments Tien, I already thought you wouldn't be able to see it.

You are right, Marina. It does take a lot of time to set it up and keep track of everything.

The plan was not to sign up to too many things, but I signed up anyway for all challenges that crossed my path lol

I think a worksheet in Excel would work great, Tien and Bea.

message 92: by Cecile (new)

Cecile Grudzinski I just love the planning. Two years ago I tried an excel spreadsheet, and failed miserably. Last year I didn't use anything, except keep track of my challenges in a GR Personal Challenge thread. I found that I was undisciplined in my reading and didn't complete many challenges that I'd signed up for, albeit I read some great books that I picked up willy nilly. ;-D This year, I got a notebook with a page or three for every challenge, with books listed and a master list of books to read this year, (adding all the time), and a monthly tracking of books to read. I think that this will work for me.

Cecille, I do very much the same thing, but not on paper. I've used Excel spreadsheets before, but only for individual challenges with lots of options, not to combine all my challenges. What works for me is a text file for each challenge -- sort of like one page in a notebook -- but it's right on my computer, where I am when I'm searching for books.

My excel file is fairly big with about 10 tabs: separate worksheets per group and then if the challenge requires a specific formatting (like Scattershelves), it gets its own worksheet. Then I have 1 main worksheet with my list to-read for the month (useful with notes of library due dates) which I still play around with every day, if I could, lol -even it's only highlighting the ones I'm currently reading :p

Wow! that's intense! I just save links to all of my challenges and then once I've read a book I go through and check where it fits in. I try to plan based on books I already own on iBooks or my mum has on Kindle haha.
Although, I do check through nearly every day to see where I could change things up! My lists never look the same as when they start!

Mickey | 35 comments The colour of the cards indicate the bands of initial of author's surname:
RED (diamonds / hearts) = A-L
BLACK (clubs / spades) = M-Z

The ranks/suits of the cards indicate the year the book was added onto your TBR:

TBR starts in 2011

Ace: 2011
2: 2012
3: 2013
4: 2014
5: 2015
6: 2016
7: 2012
8: 2013
9: 2014
10: 2012
Jack: 2011
Queen: 2016
King: 2015

Everybody is so ambitious. I'm starting with five cards and seeing where I go from here. ;) For each category I picked two possible books, one I own and one I would have to checkout from the library. I like to try and have a balance of the two in my current reads so I'll pick the book based on whatever else is in my TBR at the moment.

Red (Diamonds/Hearts)=A-L
7 of hearts (2012): One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey OR The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

Black (Spades/Clubs)=M-Z
Q of Spades (2016): Colour Scheme by Ngaio Marsh
6 of Clubs (2016): The Moons of Jupiter by Alice Munro OR The Arrival by Shaun Tan
3 of Spades (2013): The Reader by Bernhard Schlink OR The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa
8 of Spades (2013): Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley

Best of luck, Mickey! And remember, plans are always flexible, you're welcome to change your books anytime as long as they fit within the categories ;)

How's everybody going with this challenge? I'm starting my 5th book and it looks like a short & easy one so I'm looking forward to to my next draw :D

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 65 comments I've read three with two more on the go. I know I'll slow down later though, so it's good to get a good start!
