When the loan shark enforcer who beat me up years ago is found murdered, I'm thinking it's my lucky day. Until I'm questioned as a possible suspect. I have an alibi, but not one I can divulge. Helping college basketball star Raymond Joseph shave points is not exactly something I want to share with the cops.
And not just any cop, but Detective Jack Schiller, my recent ex. A man who got a little too close, and seems intent on getting closer. I want Jack back, but I know it'll never work while I still need JoJo in my life. Though, I'm starting to think that maybe I'm strong enough to try.
But the enforcer's murder is the least of my problems as Raymond's point-shaving becomes public. I'm going to need every gambling skill I've got to win this hand.
Mara Jacobs is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Worth series.
After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in advertising, Mara spent several years working at daily newspapers in advertising sales and production. This certainly prepared her for the world of deadlines!
She writes mysteries with romance, thrillers with romance, and romances with…well, you get it.
Forever a Yooper (someone who hails from Michigan's glorious Upper Peninsula), Mara now splits her time between the U.P. and Las Vegas.
I throughly enjoyed the first book and now the second one also. These novels gives you an insight into the world of gambling, murder, and mystery! I will now read the next one in the series.
In book one we meet the flawed characters of Anna and Jack. Now I'm book two we find Anna and Jack are not together because of Anna's gambling. Will Anna give up gambling? Will Jack move past the secrets? Stay up tonight to read.
Enjoyed all 4 Anna Dawson books. I recommend the series. I don't want to spoil it but the characters are worth reading. I was in LV last week and went into her Summerlin casino. Just to see it.
Mara Jacobs keeps getting better and better. In Against the Spread, Anna Dawson is back along with Detective Jack Schiller and the boys (octogenarians who used to rule the Vegas gambling scene). Anna is a professional gambler (poker) and a compulsive gambler (sports). She's trying to reform the latter by making amends for something she's not proud of. But first, there's a dead body--a loan shark's enforcer who beat her up and broke her foot bones. Anna's a prime suspect.
Jacobs' knowledge of the gambling scene gives the book realism. Excellent characterization, a well-developed mystery and enough romance to make things interesting. Can't wait to see what comes next.
I went through a phase of light-hearted, cozy mystery books while I was traveling.. As much as I love classic novels and nonfiction, when your life is in an upheaval, light fiction is a great escape. This was pretty good. I enjoyed it.
This book is 3 1/2 stars. It had a good plot line and it seems to flow into a series pretty nicely. I was engaged in the story right from the start and I really liked the main character. I will defintely read this series.
I enjoyed this book very much because it was just so different. There were no heroes or heroines, just some odd characters that loved their little vices, like drinking, gambling , or killing. Along the road to self awareness, and learning to control their lives, some nasty things begin to happen to Anna and her geriatric housemates. And then there is a Cop she meets on the way to a twelve step meeting and things begin to get ugly fast. I also read the first book of this series, and it was also a great read. Highly recommended if only for the off beat nature of the books . I will be sure to read the next one.
